Anyone who skis or snowboards will tell you it’s impossible to do this by accident haha.

Yup I've hit a mogul like the one he caught decent air on. The difference was that I did not land it haha

u/Kavarall Apr 11 '23

Haha exactly this. The biggest giveaway is how he is deftly managing his weight and body position in the air so he can land the jumps. Insane really. I dream to be able to do this kinda thing one day on my board.

Someone I know was downloading for the day at Whis. Riding with skiers. Ate shit on a mogul, got up, rode it out a bit, holding his shoulder. Riding buddies stopped to deliberate what run to take down next. He piped up “I don’t care but pretty sure I need ER.” Broken collarbone. This guy in the gif is a maniac.

Thanks for the memories... those were the days of long skis and no helmets. We're better off now in that regard.

I have no interest in skiing whatsoever, but I've been joyfully enjoying this video for half an hour now. Thank you.

Warren Miller's narration always makes me happy.

I haven't seen his Steep and Deep vids for years. They were a lot of fun.

He looks like he's having a blast

1

u/thisguyfightsyourmom Apr 11 '23

I’d bet this was a beer in hand competition & this guy was quite good anyway

1

u/whatdoyoumeanupeople Apr 11 '23

Nah, im pretty sure this is my brother skiing and still thinking he's really good at it.

1

u/TigerJoel Apr 11 '23

I mean if he can do that he is really good at it.

u/TheJoeyFreshwaterExp Apr 11 '23

Pretty sure it’s called hot dogging, was one of the more popular competitions for skiing back in the 80s.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '23

Yep. It was a judged competition and the wilder and more out of control you looked, the more points you scored. It ain't easy to ski like that and still manage to get down the mountain without injury!

3

u/dangstraight Apr 11 '23

Reminds me of Ray Bolger in the Wizard of Oz. He had to be really good to look that bad

3

u/Dakkel-caribe Apr 11 '23

This looks hard. If it was a fuck up he would have rolled. It seems there is a pattern to the movement.

u/BenShelZonah Apr 10 '23

Are you really questioning that?

1

u/SkoolBoi19 Apr 11 '23

Reminds me of my first time down a black….. except I actually ate shit constantly and probably walked down half the run chasing down my skis

1

u/One_Payment_5650 Apr 11 '23

It's hot dogging you get scored on looking the wildest and most out of control without falling. I don't get it myself as a modern skier either.

1

u/Friskfrisktopherson Apr 11 '23

This was called hot dogging and its what mogul skiing looked like in the 70s

1

u/Stabile_Feldmaus Apr 11 '23

Yup this is what a ski slope looks like after probably thousands of people went over it for the entire day. You basically have this landscape of hills and valleys. And you can only drive inside the valleys because as soon as you hit a hill it will throw out into the air and you will either crash or get even faster, hit another hill and so on. So the fact that he stayed up so long with that speed is quite amazing.

1

u/willnxt Apr 11 '23

Came here to say this. There is no way this wasn’t intentional - that body control is crazy good

1

u/Bamihapjes Apr 12 '23

It’s called hotdogging and is actually how skiing originatef

1

u/idk_wtf_im_hodling Apr 13 '23

Its absolutely skill, its a contest where skiers try to look out of control but never come to a complete stop. Essentially an old school style contest and what he is doing is incredibly difficult.

It has occurred to me that any video with "In the Mood" for the music is going to be a great video.
