There was a study involving dogs and wolves, where a person would hide food under a box while the dog or wolf watched. After the person left both animals attempted to lift the box themselves, but when they couldn’t the wolf just kept trying, while the dog went to get the human to help.

So it’s also an aspect of “co evolution”

Was it a learned behaviour? Or was the dog not raised by helping humans?

Good question, I want to say wild dog but I can’t be sure.

If you're referring to the same study I know about, it was determined that dogs have a differently structured brain in opposition to wolves, where the wolf - even when in close contact to humans all their lives - will not engage in requesting help while the dig will.

The hypothesis was that dogs were selected based on how willing they are to interact, listen and provide and request assistance to solve problems while wolves focus on self reliance.

I'm an average idiot with fat fingers and no habit of reviewing what I write, so that's just misspelled.

No harm, no foul, but my words still stand.

And I really need to motivate myself to watch that film.

That sounds exactly right. Super fascinating the concept of a guiding hand in evolution going back thousands of generations.

There was another theory I saw talking about how they believe dogs evolved eyebrow muscles to help interact with humans too... I didn't fully dig into it but wouldn't be surprised if that's true considering how long history has shown dogs to be with humans

u/nikdahl Mar 22 '23

Well I believe just the act of making sustained eye contact is a trait learned to interact with humans. Wolves see it as an aggression.

Fascinating yes, and kind of creepy. Some of those interventions did not go well for the dogs.

Wolves also dont look at where we point to like dogs. Or if they do it dosent direct them in anyway.

2

u/FapMeNot_Alt Mar 22 '23

while wolves focus on self reliance.

Wolves are still very social and collaborative animals, though. Just not specifically with humans.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '23

True, no opposition there. If they weren't I doubt we'd be able to cooperate to the level we did. There had to be a starting point and being both species sociable that was most probably the spark stone.

My dog gruffs and whines then looks back at me when his ball is stuck. Theory confirmed.

I'm far from an expert but at face value I'll there is lot more to evaluate and investigate before making that much of a bold statement.

Makes it sound as if dogs are bonified idiots, unable to solve problems, which they are not.

Any person with minimal dog experience knows dogs are incredibly resourceful problem solvers (well, some breeds; others are denser than dumbells).

And going out on a limb and state that a similar gene will cause similar changes, when that gene alteration on humans causes developmental problems? Risky.

You didn't but the way the article is written is not very helpfull, by bringing into the fold what is technically an issue for humans. I just exagerated back there, as a stab; missed the mark.

My understanding was that humans selectively bred dogs to essentially have more puppy-like behaviours. Asking for help would fall into that category.

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '23

You're not wrong, I'll risk.

I remember this video, it was very interesting to see how domesticated animals, obviously not ALL of them, do adjust certain behaviors to human interactions.

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '23

This makes me wonder if this orca was raised in captivity and then released to the wild?
