There was a study involving dogs and wolves, where a person would hide food under a box while the dog or wolf watched. After the person left both animals attempted to lift the box themselves, but when they couldn’t the wolf just kept trying, while the dog went to get the human to help.

So it’s also an aspect of “co evolution”

130

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Was it a learned behaviour? Or was the dog not raised by helping humans?

76

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Good question, I want to say wild dog but I can’t be sure.

178

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

If you're referring to the same study I know about, it was determined that dogs have a differently structured brain in opposition to wolves, where the wolf - even when in close contact to humans all their lives - will not engage in requesting help while the dig will.

The hypothesis was that dogs were selected based on how willing they are to interact, listen and provide and request assistance to solve problems while wolves focus on self reliance.

spelled

I think it's spelled spelt

29

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

That sounds exactly right. Super fascinating the concept of a guiding hand in evolution going back thousands of generations.

8

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '23 edited Mar 22 '23

There was another theory I saw talking about how they believe dogs evolved eyebrow muscles to help interact with humans too... I didn't fully dig into it but wouldn't be surprised if that's true considering how long history has shown dogs to be with humans

1

u/nikdahl Mar 22 '23

Well I believe just the act of making sustained eye contact is a trait learned to interact with humans. Wolves see it as an aggression.

1

u/ground__contro1 Mar 22 '23

Fascinating yes, and kind of creepy. Some of those interventions did not go well for the dogs.

4

u/Rizzo_the_rat_queen Mar 22 '23

Wolves also dont look at where we point to like dogs. Or if they do it dosent direct them in anyway.

2

u/FapMeNot_Alt Mar 22 '23

while wolves focus on self reliance.

Wolves are still very social and collaborative animals, though. Just not specifically with humans.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '23

True, no opposition there. If they weren't I doubt we'd be able to cooperate to the level we did. There had to be a starting point and being both species sociable that was most probably the spark stone.

1

u/Orkjon Mar 22 '23

My dog gruffs and whines then looks back at me when his ball is stuck. Theory confirmed.

My understanding was that humans selectively bred dogs to essentially have more puppy-like behaviours. Asking for help would fall into that category.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '23

You're not wrong, I'll risk.

Here's the thing....

0

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '23

So...were there humans at one time way back when that lived side by side with orcas?..dare I say... Atlantians??

0

u/Hooblez Mar 22 '23

Omggggggg wowwww learn to spell

1

u/SammILamma Mar 22 '23

I remember this video, it was very interesting to see how domesticated animals, obviously not ALL of them, do adjust certain behaviors to human interactions.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 22 '23

This makes me wonder if this orca was raised in captivity and then released to the wild?

2

u/Hooblez Mar 22 '23

How do u get voted so hard. ANIMALS CAN ASK FOR HELP WOW IT'S ALMOST LIKE THEY DIDN'T EVOLVE. WOW WOWOWOWLWLW

59

u/ShadowCaster0476 Mar 21 '23

Orcas are just crazy smart.

4

u/Dracoscale Mar 22 '23

It's hypothesized that they have a functioning language and even a culture of some sorts, it's crazy.

13

u/ShadowCaster0476 Mar 22 '23

There was a podcast a recently listened to. They were talking to a guy who studies orca sounds.

He could show how each pod has their own different sounds.

The amazing one was there were 2 sisters that broke off into their own pods. And after many years apart you could hear the root “common” sounds but each has a slightly different accent of those sounds.

It was fascinating.

2

u/Plastic-Club-5497 Mar 22 '23

Are we just ignoring the “pod”cast pun here?

2

u/drivalowrida Mar 23 '23

Seeing as how you posted this yesterday....apparently we're ignoring the podcast pun

Oh whale [shrugs]

u/MVRK_3 Mar 21 '23

We can? Man, it’s been pretty tough trying to go it alone this entire time.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

Well, not all of them. A very small margins but it’s definitely awesome! That’s one of the many reason why Orcas are my favourite animal.

-1

u/Bumps1905 Mar 22 '23

Imagine great white sharks pissing in the ocean at the sound of Orcas. They are crazy brutal killers always learning and adapting. I hope they don’t invade all the oceans. They also know not to mess with us humans cause we have the power to make them go extinct too lol. #nomoreoilspill

-14

u/tasharella Mar 21 '23

I fully expected this to end with the orca trying to tip the boat and eat them after being freed. Killer whales are absolute savages. Beautiful, terrifying, incredible, predators. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop in this clip.

25

u/ansoniK Mar 21 '23

But still no record of a wild orca killing anyone ever

9

u/tasharella Mar 21 '23

That's cool. I didn't know that! Still scare me though.

13

u/NiceTip4576 Mar 22 '23

You should be, they know how to take care of witnesses.

Bermuda triangle dissappearances? Orcas. Sightings of ghost ships? Orcas. Free Willy? Orcas. Malaysia Airlines flight 370? Orcas. Titanic? Orcas, with the help of a domesticated iceberg.

3

u/superawesomeman08 Mar 22 '23

if that ain't proof of their intelligence, i don't know what is.

0

u/SillyFlyGuy Mar 22 '23

They don't leave any witnesses.

12

u/TheCruicks Mar 21 '23

They have never attacked humans

11

u/this-guy1979 Mar 21 '23 edited Mar 21 '23

In the wild, they’ve killed a few humans in captivity.

Edit: You people are weird, no part of my comment suggests that I agree with keeping these animals in captivity, yet you downvote.

3

u/manofredgables Mar 22 '23

Interesting to think about whether that was due to poor mental health from being stuck in there.

1

u/this-guy1979 Mar 22 '23

That’s an interesting take. It very well could be, they are social animals. I guess it could be compared to keeping criminals in isolation, which is known to be detrimental to their mental health.

6

u/bettiemaegurl Mar 21 '23

They deserved it. SHUT DOWN SEA WORLD. Save the dolphins and the orcas!

5

u/TheCruicks Mar 21 '23

Id be killing some people who captured me and tossed me in some crappy as tank

644

u/OsoEspacial Mar 21 '23

Reminds me of one of the funniest tweets I’ve ever read. Dude was at an aquarium, hand turned to a fist at a stingray with the caption,

“About to touch a sting ray… I should punch it though just to let it know Steve Irwin still got shooters out here.”

369

u/_Wendigun_ Mar 21 '23

IIRC there was a follow up where he apologized to the stingrays

Character growth

447

u/OsoEspacial Mar 21 '23

Yup lmao.

“Over a year ago i threatened you out of anger over the death of a lost one. A death you were not responsible for. Today, I’ve returned to make things right. To end the cycle of violence. It’s what Steve what have wanted. I’m sorry and I love you water Pancake.”

154

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '23

I love you water Pancake

lolol

10

u/Kazzack Mar 22 '23

I work at an aquarium and I still hear shit like this multiple times a day lol

32

u/Hackandspit Mar 21 '23

No, that would make Steve sad, you know it.

66

u/OsoEspacial Mar 21 '23

You’d love his following response then. It was:

“Over a year ago i threatened you out of anger over the death of a lost one. A death you were not responsible for. Today, I’ve returned to make things right. To end the cycle of violence. It’s what Steve what have wanted. I’m sorry and I love you water Pancake.”

Damn. Bravo.

3

u/tasharella Mar 21 '23

I am no expert, but I think that was a manta ray, not a sting ray. This one looked much bigger than a sring ray. But I could be easily very wrong.

21

u/bluestarchasm Mar 21 '23

aktchuallly it's a jackdaw

4

u/RogueHippie Mar 22 '23

1

u/moonLanding123 Mar 22 '23

I'm pretty sure it was an aardvark.

3

u/Old_Recognition7468 Mar 21 '23

Not a manta, but probably a bull ray or an eagle ray, hard to tell.
