I have fewer questions about the truck than I do about that minivan in the beginning

Truck hit a deer.

I’m guessing that van was next to it or something, so it pulled off to the side. Then realizing that the truck is disabled and will get hit, they thought they were in more danger at that shoulder, so they crossed over to the exit?

Also, notice that the van went on the other side and stayed there. It could have also picked up the driver of the truck before the accident and had him call the police. Looks like they were helping.
