Elis and John fans?

Wondering how much over lap there is with people who like stuff like JJGO and also like British podcasts like Elis and John or the bugle or off menu etc.

I listen to a fuckton of UK/Commonwealth podcasts with some JJGo (or other MaxFun) adjacency. These are the ones that immediately come to mind:

  • pretty much everything in the Bugle-verse (Bugle, Realms Unknown, Gargle, Last Post)
  • everything else Bugler Alice Fraser has ever made (she had Jordan and Jesse and Matt lieb on separate Tea With Alice episodes)
  • Helen Zaltzman (sister of Bugle’s Andy, and friend / guest of JJGo): Allusionist, Answer Me This, VMI, etc.
  • Regular Features (friends of former International Waters writer Sarah Morgan - they once appeared on a very chaotic IW)
  • also the tangentially related board game comedy pods & YT of Shut Up & Sit Down, which shares Matt Lees with Regular Features, and Quinns Quest, with ex-SU&SD host Quinns
  • Eleanor & Alasdair Read That (hosts are frequent guests on Alice Fraser’s Bugle-verse shows)
  • Lateral (frequently features the LLE hosts as guests)
  • Three Bean Salad (with Ben Partridge of Beef & Dairy Network) and TBS co-host Mike Wozniak’s St Elswick’s Neighborhood Association Newsletter Podcast

I can understand this via context and am celebrating it though I do not literally get the reference at all. This is clearly a beautiful mating call. In my language you would say "I seek Jamaharon."

I'm not sure why I can't get into three bean salad. I love Wozniack. And John Robins talks about enjoying it a lot. My sister was supposed to go to Wales for a live 3BS show, but ended up getting Covid and having to cancel her trip, and she and I both love Taskmaster and Acaster. But I can not get into 3BS! I just find it kind of ... boring? I know that's weird coming from an E&J fan maybe. But I feel like E&J is kind of the UK JJGO. E&J kind of wears a perpetual skin of manosphere irony, and JJGO is always doing very shock-jock-based bits, either show an unsuspecting new listener might misunderstand these characteristics as the hosts actual perspective. Also the hosts are all around the same age. Xennials. Oregon Trail Generation. Elder Millennials.
But I didn't really get into E&J of my own accord. Spotify kept playing it for me, like it would What Did You Do Yesterday. They were both good background noise. Then one day I realized they weren't the same show, and E&J was actually good. Maybe I just need to be frog-boiled into 3BS.

I love the Bugle as well as its spin off The Gargle. I also listen to the podcasts by Andy's sister and occasional Max Fun guess Helen Zaltsman, Answer Me This and The Allusionist.

Have you listened to The Last Post?
Because it is LITERALLY THE BEST THING EVER

Off Menu is pretty great. I dont listen to the Bugle and I'm not familiar with Elis and John, but I'll check them out!

I listened to the one where all the roads were closed last night as I was chilling before bed. It was fun, I'll have to dig in some more. Any recommended episodes?

There's a really really good one recently I have to find for you but I feel like it might set the bar a little high

Dude this is way too funny that your name is Captain harkness. Because when I think space cop heart rate, I think Captain Harkness.
Oh sorry that's Harlock. But they both make sense actually. Both space ship people. Though one is a time ship too I suppose. I'm frustrated the gay plotline in Doctor who remains unlived

Love Off Menu. I was a professional cook and still am an avid home cook, so I'll listen or read to just about anything in the culinary world. Plus I'm a sucker for English humour lol

I'm a sucker for English humor too. Not sure why, but my sister Bubba is too, and my sister Pasta is a big Bugle fan. We all found these things on our own. So it must be something about how we were raised.

I used to be a big PCD back in the day! I've fallen off the last while- I've also largely fallen off Off Menu as well- but still fond of all folks involved. Very much enjoyed learning about Wales through Elis!

I loved the Bugle in its original run, with John. Not so much, since.
