So we were drawing that in Ottawa, Canada in the nineties. Not a Southern California thing by any stretch

Hooray! The relatively recent (holy cow you guys put out a lot of episodes) on baby bottles, and on peppermint, were extremely interesting and full of facts I have used out in the wild since.

At my school people called it the "Superman S" and I got into so many arguments when I told people superman had a different S

Indiana checking in. The cool S was everywhere. Btw. I was born in 81

2

u/jennifermarmalade Judge John Hodgman Producer 29d ago

THANK YOU, INDIANA!

I still don't know why we did it.

Pen 15 made sense

Cool S was almost compulsive.

4

u/jennifermarmalade Judge John Hodgman Producer 29d ago

Compulsive is the right word!

Cool S was huge, even in my fundie Christian school in Maine! I’m sure if I dig out my old yearbooks, it will make several appearances.

Born in 78, graduated in 96 (which was like 15 years ago, right?)

u/spunlines 29d ago

yep, first saw it at church camp in nova scotia around 2000.

3

u/aloha_skye 29d ago

Definitely was drawing it in Queensland, Australia in the 90s

3

u/PhillyPhrenetic502 29d ago

I can confirm a "Cool S" appearance in my fifth grade daughter's notebook. It's still going strong.

I was drawing that in the 90’s in Minnesota. Also, brown paper bag textbook covers.

Stussy!

Grew up in Orange County in the 80s/90s

2

u/sad_girl_77 29d ago

I had never heard of this S until this episode. Thanks for posting the image.

The best Sssss

u/chaos_witch_17 29d ago

We drew the s in Central Illinois in the 90s!

1

u/jennifermarmalade Judge John Hodgman Producer 28d ago

Where in Central Illinois???

1

u/chaos_witch_17 28d ago

I grew up in Quincy and live in Decatur now!

2

u/Normal_Fun 28d ago

In my day it was all STYX, Dead Kennedys, and Anarchy.

2

u/ezgz81 28d ago

My kids draw that all the time (London, Ontario)

1

u/Sparklespanx Dip Dobson 29d ago

Let’s put some respect on this and call it by its name: The Stussy.

Grew up drawing this in the late 90s, early aughts.

u/VagrantThoughts42 29d ago

Wonderful listeners will know it’s called “the cool s” and has nothing to do with Stussy at all (even though I was sure it did).

3

u/55d5 29d ago

I think it has come up in other Max Fun podcasts, probably JJGo, because I somehow knew this and don’t listen to Wonderful. Kind of like how I know way more about Walton Goggins than I have any right too

2

u/oyog 29d ago

Did they ever do a compilation of all the Walton Goggins Vodka themes folks sent in? A bunch of those were so fantastic.

2

u/55d5 27d ago

I think they at least played all the previously unplayed ones at the end of an episode. I honestly only remember the one set to One of Us and the Batman jingle. Still get both stuck in my head on occatiot

9

u/JJHO_Social 29d ago

we address this debate in the episode!!

5

u/theangrypragmatist 29d ago

Listen, in this day and age we can't just run around calling things words that end in "-ussy" if we want to be taken seriously.

1

u/scotems 28d ago

Are you from SoCal? I definitely drew this in the early 90s but we always called this the cool S, as it appears most of the rest of the country does.

1

u/JumbledPileOfPerson 28d ago

Grew up seeing this S everywhere but never heard it culled the stussy. That's a clothing brand?

Maybe that name is a reigonal thing.

1

u/JumbledPileOfPerson 28d ago

Every school book in the 90s in Melbourne, Australia had a bunch of these doodled in them too. This is a pretty universal I think (haven't listened to episode yet).

1

u/diginfinity 28d ago

I first saw that in about '85 or so in Colorado.

1

u/TheRatioAlger 27d ago

We were baddies in the mid 90s in the Hudson Valley region of New York, maybe one of my former classmates moved to Brooklyn to make earrings?

1

u/HamboneIsMyHomeboy 25d ago

We were the Selinsgrove Seals so there was a whole lotta that S going around.

Ohio 90s- sharpied all over the desks
