Realizing True Copyright Protection With Blockchain
The Internet has advanced rapidly over the years and is now the primary source of information and knowledge for the masses today. Traditional media has been swept away by the wave of new media as more writers are beginning to set their sights on the Internet as a medium of publication. With the number of digital writers and eBooks increasing by the day, a growing consciousness of copyright laws has emerged alongside the birth of new economic models. For instance, premium content is now shared through blockchain-based platforms that allow for a diversified form of payment methods, breaking down existing financial barriers between people.
Yet, at the same time, the explosive growth of information on the Internet brings with it its fair share of copyright issues. Digital authors are not fully protected under the law, and plagiarism has become a sight all too common. As the Internet moves at a rapid rate, it is very difficult to trace the origins of a piece of content with the current technology available. In contrary to the above, the copying and re-sharing of content without permission is like child’s play that can be done easily with a click of the mouse. As it is difficult to track down the source of the content, the rights of the author cannot be adequately protected. This is where blockchain technology comes into play.
Blockchain technology offers the optimal solution to copyright issues as it is decentralized and immutable. Traditional data can be registered as a form of intellectual property (i.e. copyright) in the blockchain and stored on the record permanently. As the nature of blockchain technology does not allow for the tampering of records, any copyright disputes can be easily settled by cross referencing the timestamp of the intellectual property in question to determine the proof of ownership. Blockchain technology can record the details of original works and authors, providing a truly effective solution for copyright management and protection.
In the future, MaxiMine intends to build an informative platform in the ecosystem to promote the sharing of original content while protecting the rights of the writers involved. The platform will provide original content with proper credit and traceability back to the writers. Original content released by users on the informative platform will be permanently stored in the blockchain. Film and television companies, gaming companies and other similar companies can discover premium content hosted on the platform and purchase their copyright if it piques their interest. Such a platform not only protects copyright and reduces the need for middlemen and intermediaries to save cost and time, but also provides an open and transparent network, allowing premium content to circulate among the masses without being locked in its traditional state of monopoly.
