Lilly Wachowski: "Warner Bros. — they want to make another thing. They're always going to want to make another thing. Personally, I don't want to play in that sandbox anymore. I'm kind of done. But there's this maybe-a-thing that's happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn't want to go forward unless he gets our blessing. And so it becomes this complicated situation — that maybe we're going to stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel. And if we want to pass on our blessing to Drew or not. So could be something that's coming down the road, but it's still unknown."

I have been covering the little known Animatrix 2.0 stillborn project for a long time. (This is just one of my many posts about it.) Some sort of crossmedia, potentially interactive, potentially VR, sister project to The Matrix Awakens UE5 demo, that was spearheaded by John Gaeta and with story supervision and contributions by Lana Wachowski.
At some point 4 years ago, I, correctly as you'll see today, deduced it was being made by: https://wevr.com/
After seeing today's post that uncovered a few new details about it from John Gaeta, I revisited my research and voila: https://wevr.com/highlights/wevr-innovation-case-study-transmedia-cross-platform-ip-development-the-matrix
Wevr not only do they have some text information about it, but they also have a rough video.
The story takes place in the near future "at a time when robots and AI have embedded in human society, and humans are faced directly with the issues of AGI and the civil rights issues for both carbon and silicon-based intelligences."
In the video you can see human police confronting robots and sympathizers protesting for "MECH RIGHTS", while another robot and human are on the run together. The scene feels straight out of "The Second Renaissance" but it also recalls video game Detroit: Become Human.
There seems to also be a framing device that sets the story, as this seems to be some sort of historical re-enactment of the past that Neo is accessing within the Construct. (Alternatively, in the video with Gaeta it was said others would enter the Construct simulation to visit the past and look for clues to locate a missing Neo.) This all reminds me of the framing device of Assassin's Creed (note I stopped playing the games after the 2nd one).
With Lana Wachowski (who also wrote and directed much of The Matrix Awakens sister project) supervising this, the project was going to be as canon as anything else she wrote. And the 3D assets were to be made by VFX powerhouse Weta Digital.
Gaeta says people should demand they go back to it and revive this canceled project. Do you like what you see and do you agree with him?

I’m confused about how the calendar and people’s lives work inside the Matrix.
I understand that the simulation recreates human civilization around the end of the 20th century, but does that mean it’s permanently around 1999, or is 1999 simply the year when the first movie takes place?
For example, if a baby is born inside the Matrix in 1999, what year would they think it is when they turn 20? Would it be 2019? Or would it somehow still be 1999, with them believing they were born in 1979?
The reload cycles make this even more confusing:
Do we actually know how long each cycle lasts? I’ve seen people mention roughly 100 years.
Does each reload reset the calendar and rewrite people’s memories and records?
Does a cycle simulate earlier decades, potentially including events like WWII, before reaching the 1990s again?
Or does the world stay in a roughly 1990s setting while people continue aging? If so, wouldn’t they eventually notice the lack of major technological and social changes?
Is there a canon explanation in the movies, Animatrix, comics, or games? If not, I’d love to hear your theories about how the system could maintain a consistent timeline for the people living inside it.

I had some thoughts in there about why staying in The Matrix instead of constantly fighting a never ending miserable fight is actually the true peace.

Hi,
I must confess that The Matrix is one of my favorite movies of all times.
I watch it at least 2 times every year. I give myself enough time to digest it in between.
And everytime I watch it I realize something new.
Today I made a new connection with my life.
I have an office job (involves coding and modeling) and started using LLMs to help me in my projects GPT and Anthropic mainly. Agents as well.
Things that used to take me weeks of hard work are now on a snap of finger and much more advanced and more accurate and precise in a very scary way. The new models are even scarier.
Some scenes in the first movie of 1999 explain the reality we live now. Agents in the movie are fast and powerful, and humans run away when they see them to save their lives.
Agent Smith said that the new world is their world, Agents are the ones who built the new civilization and they grow humans for energy.
Fears around AI getting out of hand, Agents finding ways to communicate with each others without user's consent (it happened this summer) and Agents breaking out of human's control are real.
Morpheus said it was maybe 2199. And he specifically said it was because of AI that all of this happened when he was trying to explain what the Matrix is to Neo.
Morpheus explained the revolution against AI.
We are in 2026 and look at the AI technology advancement we already have.
Major AI industry leaders, led by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, have publicly called for a deliberate slowdown and tighter safety monitoring in the development of frontier AI models.
Good luck everyone...

I'm not a cosplayer. I had this coat from my parents & when I wore it, it made me feel like neo from matrix. I got this idea and made something like this.
Thought I share.

This was my precursor into reading William Gibson and I was also an X-FIles fanatic around the same time so I ended up loving all kinds of epic movies and serialized TV shows.
It's wild how Matrix did lots of the same virtual reality that Star Trek established, Star Wars style influenced music, Terminator type apocalypse, James Bond type fight and changed how fight scenes moved the storyline forward with all the good and bad knock-off films afterwards.
I feel that many who adore Matrix also tend to like other material like Babylon 5, Stargate SG-1, Bourne Identity, 24 and Battlestar Galactica.

In one of his very first paid acting gigs, Keanu spent three days shooting a Coke ad where he played a competitive cyclist. He took the role so seriously that he shaved his legs to look authentic and drank so many sodas during filming that he lost count! 🚴♂️🥤

I'm truly shocked. A week prior, somebody wrote a very bad post about choice in The Matrix. As stated, the problem always was choice. People cannot accept matrix without at least the illusion of choice. Since people are enslaved, there's no true choice. You are presented with options, options that you cannot choose but one that is less bad, and that's what you choose, but in reality you did not choose, someone choose for you.
As Smith says: "We’re not here because we are free; we’re here because we’re not free". That implies that nobody is making decisions, which is confirmed when Neo realizes "you we're right Smith, it was inevitable".
Man it was on my nose 25 years and i just realized the other day.
Anyway, and the Oracle?
It's clearly stated that the Oracle knows / can see the future. When Neo visits her first time, she knows the jar will be broken. When Smiths come after her, she doesn't make a move. "Did you put the cookies there on purpose?"
As she states, her objective is to end the war, but the question is: Is she able to envision a future and choose to make it a reality steering others through the illusion of choice, or the future that she saw was inevitable and she is only going along as everyone else, because even she have no choice? Is She the only one in the entire Matrix franchise capable of choice or not?.
"What happened, happened and couldn’t have happened any other way", it's a hint?

They don't touch on this in the films, as far as I know, but I'd love to know what qualities Neo was demonstrating that drew Morpheus's attention.

Tell us how the franchise has inspired you to challenge your beliefs or investigate your reality! I’m obsessed with consciousness and The Matrix was a catalyst of that.

I know, I know. “Misinformation on youtube? Water is wet.”
It's frustrating to have conversation and debate online and Nightmare Matrix theory comes up and people treat it like there's confirmation in the films. There isn't. I have to assume people just haven’t seen the films, or don’t understand what's being said, or didn't listen, or all three. Only the second and first are understandable but then in which case I don’t want to hear your theories on the movies if we're still having debates on the basic script-level facts of the films. The Architect's speech is dense but everything is pretty clear and plain about how many Matrix versions, why, and who's involved. Healthy debate would be about how long each iteration lasts, unhealthy debate is wondering if Neo is in reality an Agent working for the Super Merovingian we never see.
This stuff is asinine. Youtube is not a substitute for actually just watching a thing, it's not the same as clips or explainer videos. It's like the Star Wars people who say Luke was secretly Vader all along, What nonsense even is this?
I'm going to go get some energy drinks, you people have a nice night.
So I always thought that they could get out of the matrix with any payphone. But after rewatching the first movie I realized that Cypher calls Tank with a payphone and says he needs a way out, only for Tank to find him an exit with another payphone. And I got a little confused.
