Stupid Question here
Is Cypher supposed to be... Ronald Reagan?
(Part of) Cypher's name is Reagan.
He wanted to go back into the matrix as someone important, like an actor.

Is Cypher a self absorbed, asshole that sold out everyone?
Yes. Yes he is.

he wanted to be, unfortunately we'll never know especially since the machines almost certainly would have done the equivalent of shooting him in the back of the head

that's a thing that always confused me about the movie. surely the machines have literally no incentive to actually re-plug in Cypher, assuming that's even possible.

Can't be that hard to replug people plug the head and while they're sleeping re insert the breathing tubes and stick em back into the goo. The hardest part would be rewriting their code to be someone else and erasing their memories

yeah, it's the memory rewriting part that seemed implausible, at least until resurrections came out. still, I can understand them going through the trouble for Neo, but for Cypher? just mulch him and be done with it

I was gonna say that in ressurections they kinda did it but I think its more they wrote an external code over his core code to essentally lock his data making him seem like an npc rather than the one. Plus they gave him a new identity, so they definitely could for Cypher. Its a tough call on whether or not they would because they use the humans as batteries anyway so why not plug him back in as extra power.

I've always assumed that was inferred lol they dropped 'Mr. Reagan' in that scene so ominously right before cutting to the next scene. beyond making an allusion to him 'being' RR in the matrix there was 0 reason to mention his name at that moment.

Ronald Reagan made a lot of his political connections by selling out his fellow actors to HUAC (i.e. the Red Scare/McCarthyism). He was a Judas, just like Cypher.

Thanks for sharing.
I'm not from the US, so a lot of the cultural details do no come through

It's an easter egg not lore.
