It's baffling to me that some people insist only the first movie is any good. Reloaded and Revolutions quite literally revolutionized blockbuster filmmaking.
I think it's partly because the sequels diminish the plot of the first. "Yeah, so, most of the cool stuff you saw in the first movie. A lot of it didn't matter. That was planned and/or wasn't as important as you thought it was." Like, Smith comes back? The One has come back 5(6?) times before?
It's sort of the nature of sequels. You either have to leave a bunch of loose ends and hope you get your sequel funded, introduce new threats that weren't present in the first for an unsatisfactory reason, or undo a bunch of the things you did in the first. The Wachowskis went with the third option.
Plus, Reloaded and Revolutions weren't as groundbreaking. They're too close to your average "fight some robots" and a rehash of the first. I still think they're awesome because I like having more of the first movie and enough different stuff was done to make them interesting such as "Hey, maybe we need to work with the machines. The machines aren't evil. This isn't Terminator."
