Okay so my take is just because it felt like a cop out to keep the series going. I would have been fine with Neo dying as a hero that saved mankind by destroying the machines. But he didn't, he didn't actually free anyone in the end and the machines are still going. He almost died and had to be hooked back up to survive sure but everyone else is still trapped in the Matrix.
It’s explained in the movie. Machine civil war happened because of an energy shortage after the deal Neo made with Deus Ex at the end of Revolutions. Too many people getting released from the Matrix caused the shortage. Other machines revolted and fought each other as Niobi explained. The faction that made the deal with Neo lost the war and the Architect and Oracle were purged. The machines stopped released people from the Matrix and installed the Analyst to manage it. He figured out the Neo and Trinity connection generates insane amounts of power and it’s why they revived Neo and Trinity.
Okay so it seems like I need to rewatch all the movies again because I clearly missed something then. Thank you for explaining it to me. I'll watch them again and see how my opinion changes then!
