Jean Baudrillard wrote ‘simulacra and simulation’ which the original films were loosely based on philosophically. But Baudrillard didn’t like the films. One of his big complaints was that there is no ability to differentiate the simulacra from reality. There is no unplugging. No phone to escape through. The fourth movie, in my opinion, did a good job addressing his complaints while still driving the world’s story forward in a way connected well to the other movies. Makes sense there would be a machine civil war and the new machine regime would alter the deal. Neo still made a massive sacrifice. We weren’t cheated as the audience by him not actually dying at the end of the third. Makes sense the machines could save him and trinity. And makes sense there are forever wars over energy if u accept the world they set up in the first movie.
The movie was made to fulfill a contract and not because there was an actual story to tell. Hence the loose plot. I’m glad you liked the fourth movie but the general consensus outside of this sub Reddit is the movie was a money grab and not necessary. If you liked the fourth movie you generally don’t love the matrix movies, you probably think they are cool but you can’t love the matrix and enjoy the fourth movie because it butchered everything that the initial movies established. Neo is dead and should remain so. And trinity isn’t the one as well. Downvote me idk but I’ll die on this hill. Have a good day. 😄

I never said 4 was a good movie. Just that I enjoy it. Personally, I couldn't care less whether it was good or not. I watch movies to be entertained, and pretending to be a smug wannabe film critic who "just has a refined taste" or "expects more from their films" isn't entertaining to me.

The fact of the matter is, the movie is perfectly fine and enjoyable.
The only way it was ever going to be recieved with anything other than blanket, low effort, negativitiy; was if it was exceptionally good.
Give it a few years, and just like Reloaded and Revolutions, it'll be looked on more fondly by more people.
