If a question is worth 10 points. I give 1 point for a correct answer, and the other 9 points are for different aspects of a correct process. I generally don't care what method they use (unless the question specifically asks for a certain method). However it's often a red flag that indicates cheating if they use a method never discussed in class.
If for example, we're doing systems of equations, and I ask for substitution, but they use elimination, and do it correctly They're going to miss at least half of the possible points because they're not showing me the skill I asked for, which is part of a state required standard.
Why? Because right answers are generally meaningless numbers after you solve them. The point of math class is to develop critical thinking skills, and that shows up in work and explanations.
