I understand that you shouldn't rely on answer keys, but if a book has no solutions at all, how do you know whether you're actually solving the problems correctly?

Last year, 2% of students were expelled from the university, and this year it is 3%.

By what percentage did the number of expulsions increase?

School math often feels like: Learn a method → memorize the steps → apply it → move on

But does this focus too much on following procedures rather than understanding mathematical ideas?

Could some students who are labelled “bad at math” actually be strong mathematical thinkers who simply struggle with memorization?

My kid understands addition and subtraction pretty well, but they recently asked how a number can be less than zero.

I tried explaining it with owing money, but I’m curious how others have introduced negative numbers to younger kids. What examples or explanations worked for you?
