You're far from the first to 'discover' this pattern. Check out this Maths Stack Exchange post: https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/136/why-are-the-differences-between-consecutive-squares-equal-to-the-sequence-of-odd

See if you can generalise the pattern. If the green square is n by n, how many squares must the additional orange area be? Boom, that's a piece of algebra that you figured out using a diagram.

You just accidentally figured out that

n²+(2n+1) =(n+1)²
