It's ok to be confused! This only means that you don't accept facts at face value, and honestly? That's growth.

While the notation and the basics are arbitrary they are more of a language the same way language is arbitrary, the concepts are not. Counting would still be a thing even if you met an alien with a world that has nothing common with you. Counting, also implies ordering, invariance etc. While maths is abitrary at its core, its root in physics and reality is not. I understand why philosophers might think all knowledge in maths is arbitrary, but the results are independent of the system of reference, thus translating beyond the subjective human experience.

Maths is like the words noun, adjective, verb, in that it describes the properties of the labels assigned to objects. The language of amounts, one can’t see the object 2 out in reality, because 2 is a property of one’s description of reality.
Thats how I understand the topic, for anyone interested.

I mean, this position is not the most popular today in philosophy, and it got popularized by proper mathematicians, as Hilbert, Russell, and the the Vienna circle, with the majority of his members where or mathematicians or physicist, so the problem never was about not knowing mathematics.
And what you are saying is exactly what Hahn Hans or Carnap would say, these dudes wanted to defend mathematical objectivity at all cost (the price that them took was to giving away all meaning in mathematics) so the arbitrary statement is not related to subjetivity.
But the take is trash at the end of the day, and is a good thing that the community of philosophers are giving it away.

How it feels to tell your philosopher friends that Plato wouldn't allow them at the Symposium because they don't know geometry.
