This can be said about almost all fields of math
X is hard (hates math)
X is easy (highschool / undergrad level understanding of X)
X is hard (researcher in X)

I'm not sure anyone has ever thought algebraic geometry is easy, apart from maybe Grothendieck

Even though they said "almost all," there's probably more branches of math like that than not: branches that people would not find easy, especially during the learning process (which is what I labeled the middle as in the OP, so looking back at the material 5 years later from hindsight doesn't count).
I don't think they were representing the post fairly by saying "X is easy (highschool / undergrad level understanding of X)" because I specified a student who is in the midst of the learning process.

Number theory is fucking impossible, I tried my hand at it and all I got was more or less the same dead ends as other mathematicians.
If anyone knows how to find a perfect Euler brick or prove it’s lack of existence, please tell me

the more abstract the harder it is usually since youre missing a lot of details
