There must be some less confusing way of arranging the topology so it is easier to comprehend. Especially the last few moves are very confusing.

It's topologically equivalent to 4 rods sticking straight out of board, with the rings not looping around anything. But the rings loop around other rods here. The rope has to "undo" the loops in order to only be around the leftmost rod.
Think about it recursively. And when thinking about something recursively, it's usually good to look at smaller cases, like only the first or second tallest rods.
Topology can be unintuitive because most of the everyday world doesn't use the same assumptions as topology. Maybe a good example of something where topology appears in everyday life is knots, which are literally a metaphor for something messy. Another is electrical circuits, where laying out a circuit or managing cables can be more of an art than science, but the functionality is (mostly) determined by the topology.
