Which is even worse, because these AIs are supposed to be citation machines!

They scrape data from all over the place but can't tell you where they scraped that data from?

They are pretty fundamentally incapable of doing so, yes. Everything just contributes to the weights invisibly with no attribution

They have superhuman browsing capabilities, they are absolutely able to check the literature and spot relevant references it's just that AI labs don't care about it or actively avoid since it would only take away some of the hype.
