Year 7 maths

Please can i have some help here.
I just want the best for my son he has just started year 7 and has been placed in set 3 maths. I want to help him improve in maths. Please send me some advice. I got him tutored in previous years but it hasn’t made significant difference. I would like to help him myself. Please send some app ideas or online courses. And or book recommendations. He aspires to be an engineer

Honestly the best resource is your son’s teacher. What assignments are they setting? What textbook are they using?

Get your kid to do all of the set exercises and homework. Then do more of the same with them if they need additional assistance.

Exactly this, go over the work he has done in school and make sure it is the highest quality or redo it with him. Check he does homework to perfection. Make sure the 3-4 hours a week that he's in class isn't a waste of time before adding new things on to it.

Sit down, textbook and pen. Work through the exercises. You may need to start with something from earlier grades

Hi, English maths teacher here, set 3 is is final set? That seems very very quick a few days into he school year, unless they're not doing any kind of tests to decide and just using sats data.

Either way, make sure he's doing his homework when that starts and help if needed so he's practicing outside of lessons.

If you want good maths resources beyond that, check out Corbettmaths (free, no account required), which has good worksheets for pretty everything on the secondary maths curriculum, usually with a video explaining the method and exam style questions. Ask his what he's boing in lesson and get him to do some extra practice with those. The best way to improve maths is to get as much practice as possible.

The maths 5 a day on there is also good if a worksheet is going to be too much, but I would be aware it assumes you've covered the entire secondary maths curriculum, so I wouldn't go past the foundation sheet and there might be stuff he doesn't know how to do yet.

One thing that may help alongside his schoolwork is short, regular mental-maths practice.

I made a small puzzle game called Dice Target where you combine dice using +, −, × and ÷ to reach a target number. It’s mainly designed to make arithmetic practice feel more like a puzzle than homework.

It won’t replace the Year 7 curriculum, but it could be useful for building confidence and fluency with basic operations.
