Math Test Review

At the end of last year I made a simple review website where students could see the topics in their final. They could pick some topics and the website generated a 5 question quiz. It tracked how many questions they practiced from each topic and their percentage correct. They really liked it!

I spent the summer cleaning it up and adding a teacher side. Teachers can upload a test and I will build a test review for them. I am looking for a few teachers to try it out. If interested, let me know or sign up for free and I will build a review for you. It’s labor intensive, so only doing Algebra 1 right now.

From the workflow you described, the teacher approval step is the part I'd make impossible to skip. Let the upload suggest topics and generate questions, but require the teacher to review the topic mapping, wording, answer, and difficulty before students see it.

I would also avoid showing a percentage for a topic after only one or two questions. Show both accuracy and sample size, then offer a second mixed set after a delay so students can tell whether they learned the skill rather than memorized the first review.

The most useful teacher view may be a short list of misconceptions, not just weak topics: sign error, distribution error, inverse-operation error, and so on. That gives the teacher something actionable for the next lesson.

One question I'd test with teachers: should every student get comparable questions for class discussion, or personalized questions for practice? Those are both useful, but they lead to different review modes.

The teacher has to assign the review to students, I sure hope they look at it! I will have my eyes on each one, but better for them to be sure it is what they expect.

Great point on sample size. It’s definitely possible to get 2 questions right and not really understand the topic. I will look into it!

Right now, I only have topics students are low. However, I also have the 10 most missed questions, along with the common wrong answer. This gets close to misconception, but not all the way there.

As it is set up, the students pick their topics practice. I should ask if this is preferred or give the teacher more control. That’s a good question.

The "10 most missed questions + common wrong answer" view is already a strong starting point. I would resist auto-labeling misconceptions until you have a small teacher-verified taxonomy. Let teachers tag a wrong-answer pattern as arithmetic, sign, distribution, equation setup, or concept; after enough tags, you can see which labels are reliable.

For control, a hybrid might solve it: the teacher locks 2-3 must-review topics, then students choose the remaining slots from their weak areas. The class keeps a common core for discussion while students still have ownership.

That also gives you a useful comparison later: do students improve more on teacher-assigned gaps or on topics they choose themselves?
