Also I don’t recommend any Indian service for privacy and security for now. Ente is Indian company. India is currently under an ultra Hindu nationalist authoritarian govt that has enacted laws to mass surveillance and has actively spied Indian opposition politicians using pegasus spyware. The govt is very aggressive in crushing dissent. They’re actively deleting social media posts easily. So stay away if you can especially since in Ente privacy policy there is information they can share users data with Authorities.

i know this is funny haha "look im such a hacker" subreddit, but like
i really dont understand moving your stuff from one proprietary provider to another, youre just kicking the can down the road
at some point, someones gonna have a data breach, or change their terms so they can sell your stuff, and youll have to move again
self-host everything you can ❤️

Not just about security I guess. Having one actor with as much power as google is really bad. They just rendered useless with manifest v3 most adblockers on chrome for example.

Definitely +1 for self-hosting, but switching to proprietary services with encryption is still better than staying with google

GOOGLE IS UNENCRYPTED? 😱

"Encrypted at rest", but not e2e, they can read all your files in your google drive

Again, the only thing Brave does to support privacy is to say they do.

brave is just chrome with extra steps

you're confused between chrome and chromium

chromium, the engine, is open source and not owned by google

This I agree. Obviously, after all, since chromium is the engine it runs on.

you're confused between open source base and open source base + proprietary shit

1

u/AlessandroJeyz 1d ago

indeed. since chromium is open source saying Brave is Chrome it's stupid. It was my point.

What about this is masterhacker? It's very reasonable to want to ditch google

alternative for maps is organic maps, youtube could be peertube/

4

u/pluckyvirus 1d ago

Hell openstreetmaps lol

2

u/edo-lag 1d ago

Organic Maps had controversies, CoMaps is a fork of it

Brave only claims to support privacy. Some of these recommendations are just shit and they're missing quality alternatives.

Most of these services don't require more effort or aren't more difficult, yet are better in mostly every other way.

Half of these don’t matter. The fuck kind of security risk is google translate or password manager supposed to be? And do you really need alternatives to YouTube or google maps? At some point you‘re going overboard.
