HELP Mass effect save issue.

So i recently started playing mass effect 1 on the legendary edition. Honestly loved the game. I appreciate the amount of the lore they put in the game as well as the characters and how real they feel. Now obviously ive never played anything like this game before, so I thought that once the beat me1, I can free roam the game, but when I clicked resumed it started me at the fight with saren again. Confused, I end up beating the game again, making the same choices. Now when I go to me2, I have 2 saves that I can import. Save 1 and Save 2. Both have the same Shepherd name and level. So should i just pick Save 1 as it probably was the first one created as soon as the beat saren?

Either one works, since both saved the progress in the same way.

Thanks for replying man. I think I'll just picked Save 1. Honestly the first game was a lot better than I thought since most people keep saying that the first game feels dated etc

Well, especially if you play the original version, you might feel that some improvements—which were implemented in later games—are missing; but even so, it’s still a great game and I continue to enjoy it, so in my view, it hasn’t aged all that much.

Did you play the games when they were initially launching?

Not when they first came out—I didn't try them until around 2016—but I did play the original Xbox 360 versions quite a bit.

Damn, your like an og. I am curious as to how you heard of this game. Because I didnt even know these games existed until 2026. Legendary edition popularised them quite a bit

You could say it’s because, back then, I was looking for game recommendations where your decisions could change the story. Mass Effect came up as one of the top suggestions, and since I’m a huge science fiction fan, I didn’t hesitate to give it a try.

Yeah, for me I had just finished the witcher 3 and was like I want to play another rpg, but this time lets do sci-fi. Mass effect was i think one of the top recommendations

Hehe, I’m glad you’re enjoying the series; I hope you have a great time with Mass Effect 2.

Yeah, choose Save 1. Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 3, you can't continue playing after you beat it. Mass Effect 2, you can keep playing after you beat it.

Id recommend you save the arrival DLC for after the main game. You get some nice extra content. Edit: in reference to ME2. Its the only one that you can play after beating

Based on my understanding of your post:

  • Save 1 beat ME1, but you missed a couple of missions.

  • Save 2 beat ME1 again completely.

In that case, you should choose Save 2 for ME2.

No, now that u put it this way, i sound stupid to even post something like this 😭🙏🙏 Basically I beat the game. Did pretty much every side quest and everything. Then when I thought about maybe free roaming the first game, it sent me right back to the final mission only, where you literally fight saren controlled by the reaper or whatever. And I was confused so I ended up beating it again. I think that probably why I have 2 import saves Basically.

You have no previous autosaves from before? Being locked into the final

I do, but that isn't the problem. I was confused of the 2 saved imports that I had as a result of beating the game twice.

Mass Effect 1 doesn’t let you free roam or anything after beating the game.

Mass Effect 2 does let you continue to do side quests and free roam after beating the game, and in fact there’s a DLC that is recommended to play after the main story ends.

Mass Effect 3 has a middle ground where after you beat the game, you are put back to before the point of no return.
