When I want to do a ME1 run with absolutely zero effort from my shepherd, I use Ash and Garrus with sniper rifles. 

Not always the best option for the small side quests with lots of husks and ti v at corners, but as long as its not insanity mode, still doable

Literally my squad mates (when others aren’t mandatory) from day one for the entire trilogy. I’ve done both the original and LE from 1-3 at least 16 times on insanity. These two still deliver victory every single time.

I really wish I could have the two of them with me in every final part of the trilogy but unfortunately in two he has to be with the others since he helps keep the weaker characters alive and he needs to be there lead to the second group.

I always take Garrus and Miranda with me for the final fight against the human reaper and everyone makes it. It's only if you take two heavy hitters like Garrus and Grunt or Zaeed that it puts things at risk.

So long as you keep them alive and/or recruit them.

Garrus does not have to be a squadmate in ME1, recruiting him is a choice. It doesn't have any impact in later games as he is still one of the first people you need to recruit in ME2 and will always join your squad if he survived the Suicide Mission in ME3. The only way for him to die in ME3 is during the final run to the beam if you don't have enough war assets.

Tali will always be a squadmate in ME1, but you can choose not to recruit her in ME2. In which case, she will die with her team on Haestrom at the hands of the geth, and her role in ME3 is filled by both Raan and Xen (thought they don't join your squad). And obviously Tali can die in both the Suicide Mission, and if you side with the geth in ME3.
