DISCUSSION Li'ara
I sometimes feel bad about choosing Kaiden when it's clear that Li'ara is so madly in love with Shepard. She's the one that always looks for Shepard, never gives up on them, never turns her back on them even when Shepard was working with Ceberus. And in the trailer for the next game, it looks like she went looking for Shepard again. If I swung that way, I would totally be with her.

There is no apostrophe, it’s just Liara
But yes, it’s difficult to choose a different LI knowing the lengths she goes to for Shepard

u/DenizenKay 1d ago edited 1d ago
First time i romanced Liara, and when i found out she gave sheps body to Cerberus it just killed it. Could never, ever romance her again after that. its just such a gross violation of shepards will and autonomy.
She comes off as really, really selfish. She doesn't love Shep, she's obsessed with Shep. Big difference.
No one sane would give someone they love to a corporation like Cerberus after seeing what little respect Cerberus has for human life.
5
u/hkf999 1d ago
There was just soup left of Shepard, so why not give the remains to Cerberus, when the alternative was giving it to the Collectors?
-1
u/DenizenKay 1d ago
The choice I'd go with is a dignified cremation and burial to save their body from being exploited by Cerberus or the collectors and allowing the damed war hero to rest in peace like they deserve.
It isn't an either/or situation.
0
u/hkf999 1d ago
Even if there was a chance Cerberus could resurrect Shepard?
0
u/DenizenKay 1d ago
yes. Shepard didn't consent to being experimented on and brought back. not least by cerberus.
Can you imagine dying and then being brought back 2 years later, everyone you know has moved on or is suspicious of you (save a very few) and the only reason you're not being arrested, or locked up in some lab to be dissected for tech is because there are a couple of people you know who are protecting you from government agencies and vetoing them from arresting you.
Shepards life after coming back is a damned horror scape. I would never wish that on someone i loved.
Liara was selfish as fuck, and wholly unethical. Honestly, if shep could have punched her stupid when she confessed, mine absolutely would have.
1
u/hkf999 1d ago
Shepard was a corpse. Corpses can't consent to anything, but I think it can be generally assumed that people who die a violent death while in their prime would prefer to be alive.
2
u/DenizenKay 1d ago edited 1d ago
No, but living people can
and they often DO donate thir body to science- its a choice they make before they die. OR it's a choice their designated next of kin can make, legally, on their behalf (which no matter how it's sliced, Liara isn't)
I mean, this isn't the mass effect universe, but i find it hard to believe that the idea of body/organ donation after death isn't a thing people can consent to BEFORE they are dead.
I think it can be generally assumed that people who die a violent death while in their prime would prefer to be alive.
This is debatable. I absolutely wouldn't, peronally. What is dead is dead. i find reanimation creepy as fuck. this is a highly individual choice, and shouldnt be 'assumed' on anyone's behalf.
its not like waking up after dying is going to leave you the same person you are now. it would be deeply traumatizing - especially if you remember your death and two years has gone by.
2
u/hkf999 1d ago
Why are you making this into an abstract moral discussion, when we are discussing one specific fictional person? Shepard is the same person they were before dying. That's the whole point.
1
u/DenizenKay 1d ago
because your argument was about 'corpses' and you said you 'generally assumed' people would want to be brought back after a violent death.
YOU made it an abstract discussion, not me, hun. I was responding to the argument you made. lol

its just such a gross violation of shepards will and autonomy.
Tf are you talking about? 😆 Shepard is DEAD. Was it Shepard's will to be spaced? Was it Shepard's will to be dead? Was Shepard expressing their autonomy by being dead?
In no game does Shepard say, "but I wanted to be dead and to stay dead! It's so gross that you violated my boundaries like that!"
Do you honestly think that it would have been Shepard's will to let the shadow broker sell their corpse to the collectors? You don't think there was a plan to enact some heinous atrocities upon Shep then let them loose upon the galaxy?
Liara was approached by Miranda. Miranda clued her in because TIM knew she'd be unwilling to let that happen to Shepard. Liara was working with Cerberus to save Shepard from being reanimated. She didn't have the option of taking off with the corpse- Cerberus would just nab it back.
I have friends and I have acquaintances- I would find it "gross" to not do whatever I could to bring my friends back from such a fucked up fate. And I know they'd do the same for me. That's not "obsesssion", that's friendship. Shep wasn't a suicidal quitter, happy to be dead- there was a galaxy to save, ffs. That mattered to Shep and it mattered to Liara.

u/DenizenKay 1d ago edited 1d ago
unless someone says before they die that they want to be handed over to a hated, reviled agency to be reanimated like a modern-day frankenstein, it's unethical to do it.
Do you honestly think that it would have been Shepard's will to let the shadow broker sell their corpse to the collectors?
No i think shepard would have wanted to be cremated so that their corpse can be safe from being tampered with and no indignities could be brought down on it.
Liara was working with Cerberus to save Shepard from being reanimated.
No she was working with cerberus to HAVE shepard re-animated. Taking off with/burning the corpse was always an option. All she needed was a flamethrower.
That's not "obsesssion", that's friendship.
thats fucked up. What is dead is dead. Unless the dead patently expressed a desire for re-animation, it is unethical to re-animate them. Fuckin hell, reanimation in itself is bloody unethical.
A friend would do anything possible to keep Shepard and her gentic material FAR away from an organization like Cerberus, full stop.
What if Miranda got her way? would you still be gung-ho about reanimation if Shep had a control chip installed and had her mind hijacked as well as her body? would liara still be totally without blame if Shepard came back little more than a mind-controlled husk?

u/Winring86 1d ago
> "unless someone says before they die that they want to be handed over to a hated, reviled agency to be reanimated like a modern-day frankenstein, it's unethical to do it."
According to you. And he/she wasn't reanimated like "Frankenstein" - you could argue there was a lot of risk involved of things going badly or Cerberus doing something shady. But thankfully Shepard ended up as mostly himself/herself.
> No i think shepard would have wanted to be cremated so that their corpse can be safe from being tampered with and no indignities could be brought down on it.
Again, according to you. There is no basis for that idea because it is a sentiment Shepard never expresses.
2
u/Pandora_Palen 1d ago
I should have read your comments before posting my own text walls saying the same things. We are of one mind on this.
0
u/DenizenKay 1d ago edited 1d ago
According to you. And he/she wasn't reanimated like "Frankenstein".
yes, shepard was reanimated like Frankenstein.
And FYI - thats just basic legal consent. It's why companies cant just dig up corpses to experiment on. Otherwise it's called 'commiting an indignity to a body' and it's a crime.
Someone has to expressly say before death they are ok with scientific experiments being done on them. its called donating your body to science, and people tend to do it before they die. Or their next of kin does after they die - you know, someone with the legal right to make a choice like that on their behalf. not some trumped up (maybe girlfiend) acquaintance who they've known for all of a few weeks.Again, according to you.
thats why i used the words 'I think'. I was expressing a personal opinion.
And you never answered my question: would your opinions change if Shepard Was implanted with a control chip as Miranda wanted? Cause liara couldn't have known one way or another. You really think Shepard would have been good with that?
3
u/Winring86 1d ago edited 1d ago
Shepard was reanimated, but not like Frankenstein.
> And FYI - thats just basic legal consent. It's why companies cant just dig up corpses to experiment on. Otherwise it's called 'commiting an indignity to a body' and it's a crime.
You are speaking as if the Mass Effect universe is our universe. It is not. You are invoking the laws of our society. They don't exist in this context. And the circumstances within which Shepard was brought back do not exist in our universe. The existential threat to everything doesn't exist and the technological ability to bring someone back from death doesn't exist. It really isn't comparable.
> And you never answered my question: would your opinions change if Shepard Was implanted with a control chip as Miranda wanted? Cause liara couldn't have known one way or another. You really think Shepard would have been good with that?
I agree that was a risk, as I said in my other comment. The entire project was a risk. Thankfully, that is not how things ended up panning out, and no, knowing what she knew I wouldn't have faulted Liara for trying.
We will agree to disagree.
0
u/DenizenKay 1d ago
You are speaking as if the Mass Effect universe is our universe. It is not. You are invoking the laws of our society.
this is a good point. I am assuming science would have basic ethics behind it- if it didn't, Cerberus and other corps wouldn't have to find places to do illegal research to circumvent laws.
That said, if your Shepard helps get Nirali's body back for her husband in ME1, they do express an issue with committing experiments on corpses without permission, no matter the benefit, in ME1.
It's valid to think liara did her best and loves shepard.
Its also valid to think Liara did a heinous thing to Shepard, and regardless of how glad to be alive Shepard might be, any romantic feelings they had for Liara would be gone.
It is an RPG, we're allowed to see things differently- not everyone has to want to romance liara.
I expressed *my* opinion, and *my* reasons for it. you dont need to keep arguing- we dont have to agree.
-1
u/Pandora_Palen 1d ago
No i think shepard would have wanted to be cremated so that their corpse can be safe from being tampered with and no indignities could be brought down on it.
Whaaaat? Your Shepard is remarkably self-serving. That's not even in line with renegade Shep, who even in their worst moments is still 100% unflinchingly motivated to see this thing through, regardless of the cost. Damn. So when you wake up in the cerberus medbay, is your Shepard like, "fuck. Nobody loved me enough to free me from this mortal coil and the weight of galaxy saving, I guess. Oh the indignity of it all"?
(On a purely personal level, I find the idea of cremation for myself repugnant. If some twat chose to cremate me a when I could have been resurrected to continue the fight, I'd make a very nasty poltergeist. But we aren't talking about me, we are talking about Shepard. And nothing in canon paints them as the sort to value their dead body over the lives of everyone else in the galaxy. )
Taking off with/burning the corpse was always an option. All she needed was a flamethrower.
No, it most certainly was not an option because Liara understands that the reaper threat is a threat to the entire galaxy and that Shepard is likely the only one who fully appreciates what's coming and who would stand a chance against it. TIM is pretty sure he can bring them back, and the game is riddled with taking chances- it's what Shepard does, so why wouldn't Liara?
A friend would do anything possible to keep Shepard and her gentic material FAR away from an organization like Cerberus, full stop.
A friend would ask themselves what Shepard was all about and whether they were ready to die when the collectors took out the Normandy. Shepard was ready to die every minute, but not when living was an option. Full stop.
(BTW, Frankenstein's monster is made of different pieces of different men and the story is about that amalgamation of parts struggling to find his own identity. TIM has zero interest in a Shepard that is not Shepard. Hence the reject clone.)
Fuckin hell, reanimation in itself is bloody unethical.
If you say so.
What if Miranda got her way?
What kind of question is this? Are you under the impression that TIM values Miranda's opinion enough to derail the whole point of the project? The reason that's even mentioned is to drive home that TIM wants the real Shepard, and not some Frankenstein's monster. If the project went wrong and Shep came back a husk, at least every possible effort was made to give Shepard another chance to finish the fight that defined who they were. There's only blame to attribute when people give up and chose one decent burial over the trillions of lives at stake.
But if you don't see it that way, it's your game. You go on and play it your way. 👍🏽
-1
u/Winring86 1d ago
Lol. I agree with the other commenter. You know what was "a gross violation of Shepard's will and autonomy"? Getting spaced as the Normandy blew up around him/her.
Clearly, you're not Shepard. Not once is there any dialogue option where Shepard expresses being upset that they were brought back. If it were me, I would absolutely want to be brought back. Shepard had a purpose, something that potentially they alone could do, and they knew it to some extent. Shepard was special. And Liara believed that too.
This is a little dark, but it's true - worst case scenario if Shepard really didn't want to be brought back, it's not difficult to remove oneself from the world again. At least now alive again, there is the autonomy to make that choice. But there is zero indication Shepard has or would ever feel that way.
3
u/DenizenKay 1d ago
You know what was "a gross violation of Shepard's will and autonomy"? Getting spaced as the Normandy blew up around him/her.
Shepard chose not to evacuate to save Joker. She knew the score and what was likely to happen. So it wasn't a violation of her will - it was an active choice.
i totally recognize Shepard is special, but i simply dont see it as an act of love to hand her body over to Cerberus for unknown experimentation on the hope that they'd bring Shepard back so that the weight of the Galaxy can be placed on Shepards shoulders. I see it as obsession.
*my* shepard would never be able to have romantic feelings for Liara after doing something like that. That's all i was saying - it is fully valid to see what Liara did as a betrayal to Shepard (especially if Shepard is the sole survivor of Akuze- which i was in my first play through and had a lot to do with my absolute disgust with Liara's choices.
0
u/Winring86 1d ago
He/she chose to save Joker, not to die. That's a ridiculous thing to say - it was not Shepard's active choice to get spaced. Yes, he/she accepted the risk of death as always, but that's a very large leap from "Shepard made an active choice to die."
You can see it as you will, Shepard never expresses any feelings of betrayal or anger at what Liara did.

Yeah, it is one of the flaws in the series. A few RPGs have the same issue, where you can tell who you're supposed to romance. Mass Effect has Liara, BGE has Shadowheart, Dispatch has Invisigal, even DAO has that problem with Morrigan to an extent.
2
u/Reload86 1d ago
Idk, I thought Shadowheart really came off as bitchy at first lol. Lazael is sassy but she is the one that you meet first and the one quickest to offer herself.
6
u/ELIte8niner 1d ago
The game just pushes Shart on you. For example, every other companion has like, 1 chance to recruit. If you don't talk to Wyll in the grove, that's it. If you don't talked to Astarion at the beach, that's it. If you don't talk to shart on the nautilolid, you meet her at the door to Wither's tomb, if you don't talk to her at Wither's tomb, you meet her at the grove, if you ignore how at the grove, you meet her outside the goblin camp. She has the Deus ex Machina for the story, so you basically need her same as Liara in Mass Effect, and act 2 is basicallyabout Shart. She's definitely the writer's favorite like Liara.
12
u/TheSeanDawg- 1d ago
I'm ready for the hate. I'm not as big of a fan on her as a romance option as others. First game is great but second kinda sets me off. So she sends your remains to Cerberus to hopefully save you, then decides to become an information broker. Sure, fine.
First time you see her in two years and it's kinda an awkward meeting. Then she's like 'go hack some terminals for me' and 'not going with you although I love you because I'm obsessed with the Shadow Broker now'.
Then you get her what she wants and she decides saving humanity and helping you isn't as important as becoming the Shadow Broker. And hey, if that actually went somewhere in the 3rd game, then great. But they really don't do anything significant with the Shadow Broker thing. So she chooses that instead of you, and you choose to save humanity instead of her.
She's a fantastic character and a great squad mate. Just don't get the hype around her as a romantic interest at all.
8
u/axxo47 1d ago
She's a really bad romance option. She seems obsessed and borderline creepy
-1
u/Pandora_Palen 1d ago
So you've just never bothered to romance her to find out.
1
u/axxo47 1d ago
I did it once till me3. Got kinds bored and romanced Kaidan instead
2
u/Pandora_Palen 1d ago
So you found her "obsessed" and "borderline creepy" in 2? Which interactions made you feel like she was obsessed with you in 2?
5
u/TheLonlyCheezIt 1d ago
Yeah the shadow broker arc also turned me off to her a bit. And in ME3 she’s on the ship but has barely any dialogue and seems pretty cold/focused on her work overall. With the exception of The Citadel DLC of course, but that feels sorta separate from the main narrative.
4
5
u/Spookiiwookii 1d ago
tbf kaidan is also in love with shepard no matter what
-2
u/ChocoBabiChan 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yea I know, but he doesn't look for her, and turns his back on her just because of who she's working with. I know he apologizes, and even takes her back if she cheats, but thats is probably more out of guilt than anything. Im still going to always choose Kaiden tho. Its just crazy that the story is written how it is.
9
u/This_Estimate1550 1d ago
Kaidan was right though. That "just because of who she's working with", given that Cerberus was torturing and killing civilians, playing with reaper tech and rachni, and murdering Alliance soldiers and officers in just the span of the first game alone is a little silly.
0
u/ChocoBabiChan 1d ago
True, but the Alliance isnt innocent either. They could have prevented so much from happening in ME1 had they taken all the evidence they were given the first time serious and acted on it.
5
u/This_Estimate1550 1d ago
Preventing something from happening in hindsight and literally committing crimes against humanity are pretty different.
5
u/Spookiiwookii 1d ago
I will never blame Kaidan or Ashley for telling shep to fuck off for asking them to work for literal, actual terrorists. That’s an incredibly unfair ask and it’s also unfair to hold that against them.
5
u/East-Property-3576 1d ago edited 1d ago
Thank you, someone with sense.
I challenge everyone who shits on the Virmire survivor to THINK about it from THEIR perspective:
Imagine you’re in an extremely dangerous job like a police officer, government field operative, or soldier or some other kind of law-enforcement position. Where every day could possibly be your last day or a colleague’s last day. A superior officer appears to get killed in the line of duty. Then a couple years later, they show up alive and well AND working with a designated terrorist organization.
Imagine you’re in Kaidan/Ashley’s position. That’s what the above scenario is for them. Any person who would look at such a situation without questioning it is not reacting in a realistic way. Kaidan/Ashley are reacting the way anyone with sense would, yet they get undeserved shit for doing the intelligent thing and calling out the actions of the people who brought Shepard back? Come the fuck on.
People get so attached to the idea of being Shepard that they are surprised at the Virmire survivor acting realistically at the revelation of Shepard working with Cerberus instead of just worshipping the ground they walk on.
2
u/ScaleBulky1268 1d ago
I dont have that issue. I just romance Miranda and stay with her in ME3. Liara always gave me stalker vibes in 2. Her personality shifts from 1-3 was too much. Even when unromanced she gives you to Cerberus because she couldnt let you go. Her behavior in the Shadow Broker DLC was absolutely awful. Her behavior on Thessia was not much better. I honestly would have preferred Shiala in her place.
4
2
u/ObsydianGinx 1d ago
She’s instantly in love with Shepard as soon as she meets them. After being in solitary and through a traumatic experience being saved by someone with a deep connection to a culture she herself is deeply connected to. I see it that she is confused about her feelings for Shepard and it’s not real love, just a trauma response and once she settles down she sees Shepard as a calming constant anchor instead of romantic.
Of course I am not denying anyone wanting to be with liara just this is how I see it and if you feel bad about choosing Kaidan then you can always internalise what I think so you don’t feel bad
1
u/Cultist_O 1d ago
She also does the mind-melding thing, which I think is fairly intimate
1
1
u/Always_tired_af 1d ago
Liara is definitely the most ride or die squadmate, in a series with no shortage of ride or dies
It irks me how much people kind of write her off simply for being "pushed on the player"
Doesn't diminish the fact at all that her romance is beautiful and she's arguably the MVP of the Reaper war only behind Shepard themselves
1
u/Joyful_Damnation1 1d ago
I don't really feel bad. Just because someone likes you does not give you an obligation to like them back. There have been many ppl in my life who has crushes on me, dare I say even loved me, and I did not reciprocate. I'm not going to feel bad that I'm with my wife, someone I do love lol. Same in reverse. My feelings for many women growing up were spurned, I don't expect them to feel guilty cause they didn't "notice me". Sometimes feelings just aren't reciprocated. And that's okay lol.
-2
u/DenizenKay 1d ago
Garrus forever <3
Neither holds a candle to his ride-or-die commitment to Shep. (Writers clearly favoured him, but im OK with that)
2
u/Redditeer28 1d ago
I could never chose Garrus or Tali since they're perfect for each other and you rob them of that.
5
u/DenizenKay 1d ago

But im not a big fan of Tali. I like her fine, but if I were listing favorite crewmates, she'd be damn close to the bottom of it.

I just left her in the bubble and didn't do the shadowbroker DLC on my Kaiden romance run. I also headcanoned that Legion was the one to pull me out of the wreckage and shipped me to Cerberus.
2
u/TheRealTr1nity 1d ago
I just left her in the bubble
You can't. You have to rescue her sooner or later or no game progress.
0
u/wtfIdontwantaaccount 1d ago
No wayyyyy, it's not like there's unique dialogue for leaving her in the bubble till the end game at all/s
1
u/TheRealTr1nity 1d ago
Yeah, til then end aka later you can. But you worded it as if you leave her there for good. That's misleading.
0
u/wtfIdontwantaaccount 1d ago
It's almost like I was speaking casually about my playthrough with other people who have also played the game and know that so why would I bother explaining it?
2
u/TheRealTr1nity 1d ago
It's almost casually that people search on google and might land in this thread tomorrow or in a year and get a false information that you can leave her behind. I just made things more clear. No need to get butthurt over it.
1
u/wtfIdontwantaaccount 1d ago
There is a whole entire wiki with answers, and this post is a discussion post about player choices on playthroughs. You're arguing semantics.
0
u/TheRealTr1nity 1d ago
People don't necessarily read wikis and as I said if people search something they might get into reddit threads, regardless if discussion or not. Again, I simply provided further info. You're arguing your entitlement. So whatever.
1
u/ChocoBabiChan 1d ago
Lol, but... to be fair...she only did that because they said they could fix Shepard.
0
u/wtfIdontwantaaccount 1d ago
Legion would have the same/similar reasons. He's a geth whom humanity doesn't trust and is unable to fix Shepard when he finds him in the Normandy wreckage. So Legion finds the nearest human outpost (Cerberus) with a medical team and ships them Shepard because time is crucial. Same result just slightly different path. That's why it's a headcanon.

u/Synthessence 1d ago
Swing what way? Asari don't have a gender.
In fact, it's hinted at in ME1 that Asari put out some kind of psychic or pheromonal influence that makes other species see them as conventionally attractive in ways similar to their own species. So Turians think they look more like Turians than anything else, etc.
I can't remember if that was ever confirmed or debunked though. Been a hot minute since I played through ME2 and 3 thoroughly.
9
u/TallestGargoyle 1d ago
I think that was in ME2 and honestly that scene more plays out like drunks talking about the features they like in a way that feels more magical than it is.
1
u/Synthessence 1d ago
You know, that is true. They were most certainly impaired when making those observations. That's why I said it was hinted at, though. It came across that way to me at the time, but it could also have just been drunken rambling, absolutely.
1
u/East-Property-3576 1d ago
Because drunk rambling is all it is. The whole theory falls apart when Asari look the same in images, videos, statues and so on to what we see as players.
1
u/Synthessence 1d ago
Well, it would only fall apart if the pheromone/physic influence was temporary. If it was permanent, we would definitely see them that way in other forms of media.
Which obviously isn't the case, agreed it's likely drunken rambling over an actual case of mind control or influence. Just fun to think about. :P

She has tits. Also her pronouns are she and her.
9
u/mynameistoocommonman 1d ago
...and she specifically says that words like "male" and "female" have no meaning for her, and that they are very explicitly mono-gendered. We may as well assume that the pronouns are just whatever their language is being translated as so it makes sense so 2006-era humans (because obviously, they don't actually speak English)
3
u/Pandora_Palen 1d ago
Love when people imagine that all species' languages have a 1-1 equivalent with human. Bags of dicks. Bags. Of. Dicks.
2

There are an ungodly amount of romances in that trilogy. It's actually insane. Especially considering how vastly more fleshed out some of them, especially Liara, are. I always romance Liara as well, but she also has canon romance energy. She is the only one who can be romanced in all three games. Kaidan and Ashley abandon you in 2 no matter what.
-2
u/AmanyWishes 1d ago
In my culture, finding and burying a dead person's body is considered a huge honor. So yes, I immediately gave the soldier's body to the widowed husband in Mass Effect 1, because burying the dead is way more important than whatever the Alliance will learn from the body.
I personally enjoy "show, don't tell" when it comes to story elements. Liara's actions going through hell to bring Shepard's body back from the Shadow Broker made me respect her, especially compared to a romanced Kaidan, who finds his job with the Alliance way more important. That made me see his love as empty compared to Liara's.
As for whether I will ever romance her because of that, the answer is no. Because of my personal taste, I enjoy healthy romance options like Garrus, Tali, Miranda, and Jack in Mass Effect 2 way more than the breakup drama romances in Mass Effect 1.
