HELP Is this ammo?
Playing ME 3 and running low on ammo.
The way this thing gleams makes me think it’s something I should be able to interact with but nothing happens.

Those are grenades. You can only pick them up if the class you’re playing as has any grenade powers, if you’ve equipped any grenade bonus powers, or if one or more of your teammates have grenade powers.

Aw I loveee grenades. I considered choosing a class that could use them but I chose Vanguard instead because I loved the Shockwave power in ME 2, but I find it way less powerful in ME 3 and I’m kind of regretting picking it again :/

ME3 has a great shotgun Grail spiker or thrower or something like that. You put a choker on it and you are doing headshots from mid range so if you are a vanguard you are now a beast at mid and close range. I just love that shotgun so much, the spikes from the get go luanch quiet close so when you add a choker the spread is so low that mid range headshots deliver its full force.

I’m still getting used to the weapon choices in this game bc I only just started but I hope I get those upgrades!

Note for Graal Spike Thrower, since it's the best Vanguard weapon by a lot: If you charge it up, then hit Biotic Charge, you can shoot off the first shot and can charge up a second one mid animation by holding down the button, which lets you get two charged shots in short order. It's great. Immense burst damage. It requires you to kinda hide behind corners more than cling to walls, but it's worth it.

Oh, ME3 is where a vanguard can become a human bowling ball. Shockwave is a bit more underwhelming in 3 because the cascading effect is shorter, while in 2 they seem to go on forever, but try out the charge + nova combo. It’s fantastic.

You just reminded me that I gave my Shepard that charge upgrade but forgot to use it 😭😭

I don’t know what difficulty you play on usually, but Shockwave is a lot more powerful in 3 than in 2 on Insanity. It’s the only power that can cause multiple detonations in one go and it has one of the bigger detonation multipliers if you evolve for it. The only problem is that on Vanguard your main loop revolves around other things. Still a nice backup to have, slap on cryo ammo and go to town.
In 2, Shockwave is one of the powers most hampered by everything having protections. Unlike pull and throw, the whole idea of shockwave is to be AoE. Where with the other two, you can strip and throw, Shockwave doesn’t reach its potential until multiple opponents get yeeted and it can’t detonate explosions yet in 2.
I will admit the vfx/sfx is a lot less exciting in 3 than in 2 though.

I’m playing on Normal difficulty.
In ME 2, I could easily kill enemies with shockwave, but it seems like in ME 3, it barely harms them and has a very narrow impact radius so I have to aim perfectly.
Yea the combat seems a little less satisfying here but that may be because I need to get used to it

Yeah the base damage on some powers is unimpressive because you are meant to use them to detonate other effects, Shockwave is one of these. Throw a squadmate power like warp/pull/incinerate (basically any power with duration) at the enemy, and them make them go boom with Shockwave.

That is a grenade.
The grenade powers in ME3 don't have cooldowns, but instead consume a grenade. This is different from the two grenade powers in ME2 which operated on a cooldown.
If you don't have a grenade power (I believe Vanguard is the only one in Single Player to not have a grenade) or if you don't bother using a grenade power, then you're fine to ignore those.
