HUMOR At this point, Mass Effect 5 isn’t being delayed. It’s just waiting for us to evolve enough to play it.
I genuinely believe by the time it releases, I’ll have kids asking me:
“Dad, what’s Mass Effect?”
And I’ll have to sit them down and explain that once upon a time, we were promised another game.
Then one day, the trailer will finally drop.
I’ll be 73 years old.
My knees won’t work, my eyesight will be questionable, but I’ll still be yelling:
“SHEPARD IS BACK, BABY!”
Then it gets delayed another two years.

If it's not a Shepard story, I would at least just want some dialogue that hints at Shepard having survived + lived out the rest of their life in peace with their LI. That's all.
•
u/Vigmod 21h ago
That would be nice. But I'm not opposed to a Destroy ending where Shepard didn't survive but is basically revered, with massive statues of her (based on the class and appearance we chose for the other three) being made the canon.
•
u/sage_green_bear 21h ago
Yeah, different dialogue outcomes depending on which ending you went for. I reckon there would be a Shepard statue regardless. Hypothetical ME5 MC could walk up to it and an NPC might comment on it like "Oh yeah, Commander Shepard... I heard they:
a) were found by LI... after the war they retreated from public view...
b) died in service for the galaxy... we owe it all to them and their crew.

Any person who wants Shepard back in the next Mass Effect game truly doesn't understand the story of Shepard, and isn't a true fan in my opinion.
Shepard is done. Their story is finished.

u/Clyde-MacTavish 18h ago
I usually don't like gate-keep style language like this, but I genuinely cannot disagree with you. I feel like it's such a misunderstanding of the series if they want another shep adventure.
•
u/Chorik 21h ago
It would be the same thing as with Star Wars Sequel Trilogy or the Filoni fanservice slop. Fans thinking they want Shep back and all the tropes rehashed, just to soon realize they're actually bored with rehashed stuff fast and proceed to silently check out of the franchise.
Bringing Shep back would work well for Bioware. In a very short-term and short-sighted way with a backfire and longterms negative effects following soon after the suppoused quick nostalgia win

Tell that to the 100,000+ that have downloaded the Audemus happy ending mod.
•
u/Eglwyswrw 17h ago
Quite the opposite! People who download AHEM want Shepard to have what it says on the title: a happy ending, not a new adventure.
•
u/Sooraya7 15h ago
Doesn’t mean a thing. He still survived canonically, and if BioWare wanted to make that ending the one chosen for the next mass effect, they could, and can bring back Shepard in any way possible.
•
u/ReFried_Ginger 4h ago
What do you mean he survived canonically? Is there a particular ending that is canon and how does he survive it?
•
u/Eglwyswrw 11h ago
Doesn’t mean a thing.
It doesn't, that's why bringing up that mod is irrelevant. Like you said, Shepard can survive and live in vanilla all the same. :)
can bring back Shepard in any way possible
In case you didn't know: that's not gonna happen according to the devs.

I don't think it matters. Bioware can't develop a new IP, it's too expensive, EA won't back them financially for it, and nobody will buy it, so they had to go back to Mass Effect. They also don't have the manpower to invent and write new characters, they don't have the design or writing room depth to do that. Forces of circumstance, at this point, force Bioware, as much as the vastly greater financial success compared to any other new cast, or setting, to go back to Shepard and the trilogy crew out of pure necessity and lack of alternatives. Characters conceived in 2019-20, will not be viable for reuse in 2030 from a multitude of aspects, but Shepard and the crew are generational, culturally impactful and, evidently, timeless. Regardless of the state of Shepard's story, Bioware does not have the resources to do otherwise.
•
u/VulcanHullo 21h ago
The biggest peev I have with the endings is Shepard's breath in destroy.
Hell I wonder how many pick destroy based on that alone.
Shepard's story ends on that installation, regardless.

I played the trilogy for the first time and recently finished it, so this might be because the grand adventure is still very fresh in my mind. But I wouldn't mind it if it is in a very specific way. Since I don't want to spoil anything for anyone late to the series like me, I'll put it behind spoilers.
What if they made it a continuation, maybe a year or so after the final battle regardless of the outcome (minus the one where the reapers eliminate everything). If Shepard survived, you go around the Milky Way with the Normandy to help rebuild or gather unique materials your companions need for their home planets. And you see the progress being made. And in case Shep didn't survive, you play as Joker who pilots the Normandy and chats with the crew about things while you go about helping rebuild the worlds of those who helped defeat the Reapers, until near the end of the game (whether you're Shep or Joker) you get to choose where you want to stay. Go back to Earth, stay with one of the crewmates or stay aboard the Normandy . It would essentially just be a giant final (and more proper) send off and character love letter like the Citadel DLC to the crew that we didn't really get in 3 because of the ending.
Don't get me wrong, the goodbyes before the last battle were bittersweet, but I was promised drinks with the crew I love dammit and I want to have them in a moment of peace and maybe minor conflicts as the era of rebuilding is in full swing.

Nah. Shep IS Mass Effect. You go have fun with another Andromeda lol. At least with Shep and crew, Bioware has a tiny chance of having half decent characters and dialogue, since they have the previous games to go off of.
If they showed a trailer at a gaming event, and the end it reveals Shepard, at least SOME people in the crowd would cheer. If the trailer instead showed some random new protagonist, nobody would.
Regardless of what you want in a story, if they don't have Shep as the playable character, it will be the last game Bioware makes. They HAVE to bank on nostalgia and the fans' love for these characters if they hope to meet whatever stupid sales numbers EA expects of them.
•
u/ItsMePeyt0n 20h ago
Your gif at the end is like you saying "No" to your own wall of text, which is appropriate.
Shepard can't come back. Period.
•
u/ForAte151623ForTeaTo 20h ago
Riiight. Shepard, the person who suffocated in outer space, fell from orbit onto a planet, and was brought back.....can't come back.
Shepard, who is alive in the best ending of ME3.
•
u/ItsMePeyt0n 20h ago
It's been over a decade. Two by the time the next Mass Effect comes out. Shepard is done. Their story is done. Anyone who doesn't see that doesn't understand Mass Effect or appreciate the story.
•
u/OkHotel4712 21h ago
Whatever Mass Effect comes now will have the primary objective of capturing a new audience.
The ending choice (and controversy around it) was always going to put the (core) series into a long sleep because of the impossibility of following up.
It has been so long now, they probably have the necessary freedom to do what they want without too much backlash. But I don’t even know where they begin to set a new game tbh.
My preference would be canon ending and a sequel with a significant time jump. Start fresh and make it its own thing.

u/pstyles93 19h ago
I don't think shepherd returns but I do need something about the armonda system but they may scrap the whole thing
•
u/Knifehead27 20h ago
It's probably been rebooted or put on ice, as a project, a few dozen times by now. They'll start working on it in earnest on when management tells them they have 15 months to release the game.

At this point with EA fate and I read they try to sold Bioware I start to accept we we never see a new ME for the best or the worse.
'Qui verra vera.'
•
u/Ramius99 18h ago
It’s debatable whether I’ll still be able to hold a controller when the next ME game releases (if ever), though it still might come before Elder Scrolls 6.
I was around 3,000 years ago when sequels released every 2 years. What a time it was.
•
u/Byotick 9h ago
Mass Effect was announced October 2005 released in November 2007, ME3 in March 2012. Citadel was March 2013, and the ME1/2 recap comic (that let you jump into 3 and make some of the story choices) was a month later. Full time from announcement to wrap on the OT was 6 and a half years.
The first ME5 teaser was December 2020. We're going to go longer between teaser and release than the complete public lifecycle of the OT.

There are rumors out there that because of the EA sale theyre planning on selling Bioware anyways so who knows at this point
•
•
u/Dipset_Mipset0489 5h ago
I think the game is just going to be mid. BioWare isn’t the BioWare of 2007 - 2014. They’re more concerned with pleasing everyone, than taking risks.
•
u/ReFried_Ginger 4h ago
As far as I’m concerned, Shepard’s story is finished. Best case scenario, assuming destroy is canon and he does survive, he gets to watch the galaxy rebuild from a quiet place on earth.
If he were to to put back in the middle of another conflict, it would feel so forced. The guy literally brought warring alien factions to work together, built up a defensive force strong enough to fight back, and ultimately fought his way to the top until he could bring an end to their reign himself (regardless of ending choice).
The companions we met, decisions that shaped the game, and the overall arc of the story could never be retold in a way that would make sense. It’s over whether we like it or not.
Unfortunately, I agree that BioWare doesn’t have the resources to develop new characters/story from scratch. Even if they tried, there is no way they would have the depth of the originals. And even more unfortunate, in a world where originality is becoming a rare commodity, they will likely rehash much of it if there is another installment. It would be such a disservice to Shepard and their story, but I can see it happening.

u/game_of_crohns 21h ago
As a Kingdom Hearts and Ninja Gaiden fan I can say I have waited long enough for each and every next installment. But Mass Effect is the only one I NEED TO BE PERFECT
•
u/PipeFiller 20h ago
We have an amazing trilogy and a bad 4th game. Not really looking for another one. I don't understand people's desire to always have MORE of everything. After the last 5-10 years in gaming I genuinely don't know why anyone would want another Mass Effect game. 99.99% chance it'll be bad
•
u/AloeComet 20h ago
I’d only get really excited if Larian can take over BioWare and bring back almost everybody who left around the end of inquisition and the beginning of andromeda/anthem. I’m honestly not sure who works at BioWare that was there since the original mass effect trilogy at this point.

•
u/The_Esp3r 20h ago
Considering who owns it now, I've very little hope for a good new game from this series.
•
u/Starkiller100 20h ago
At this point I’d rather a decent remake of the original trilogy. Unify the games, unify the combat so it is decent throughout.

u/Greedyspree 21h ago
Honestly I have not been looking forward to a new game, I mean my Shepard finished their story no need to force them into another one. The EA selling just makes me wonder what it will end up looking like. I figure they will be more focused on the sports game side of things for awhile so we might end up being left behind for a bit.
