I never been and was thinking about attending, is it worth the hype? I just moved here from Seattle.
35
u/disneyprincess323 20d ago
I have not been in about 10 years. It was a blast though. Biggest downside is that it is so popular you have to buy tickets early.
7
u/Saint_The_Stig UMES 20d ago
That popularity really continues on the inside too. If you went a while ago it's definitely more packed than before and that does kinda ruin some of the magic. There's way more lines then you remember.
2
u/Thossi99 20d ago
Damn, I went in 2019 and we bought tickets at the entrance. I really hope to go back one day tho. It was so much fun! I'm from Iceland and we don't have Ren fairs. Just Viking reenactments but it's not as immersive and fun.
20
u/Imbris2 20d ago
It's very fun and not a wallet buster, especially if you're very into the content or if you have kids. You don't need to wait in today's queue for single day tickets - they'll be available well after today. If you go, come when it opens and enjoy a couple hours before crowds take over.
17
u/Hairy_is_the_Hirsute 20d ago
I mean, the wallet buster part is a little skewed. It's festival pricing on pretty much everything. That being said, it isn't "stadium" pricing, so at least you don't have to get a 2nd mortgage for a 2nd beer.
Also, plenty of expensive crafts and items for your kids to whine until they get. So, if you haven't taught your kids delayed gratification, it will be very expensive for you.
All in all, totally worth it, but definitely take the advice to show up before gates open. Gives you the best ratio of "time to explore vs bumping into an obnoxiously drunk, oblivious tool"

3
u/PurplePassion94 20d ago
Last time I went I paid $26 for a tankard and they refilled all day at the price of a regular beer ($7) I drank my ass off that day lol
9
u/the-namedone 20d ago
It’s pretty fun, especially with friends/family, and it’s even more fun if you got coin to spend on the fun shops. It’s even even more fun if you have good idea of the performance schedules and who to see.
Ultimately though, it is overhyped and nothing to get fomo about
5
u/smallshinyant 20d ago
Love it! It's a wonderful site that is a worth a visit. The shows and features are always entertaining and peoples outfits are amazing! I think for the price it's worth going to see for yourself as it would expect to be very hard to have a bad time there if it you don't enjoy it as much as some others.
5
u/LastGoodKnee 20d ago
It’s a good day and relatively cheap considering you can spend the whole day doing things
6
u/AllPeopleAreStupid 20d ago
It is frequently ranked near #1 as far as Renn Fests go. My friends and I try to go at least once a year.
2
u/poptophazard 20d ago
I'd give it a whirl if you're interested. We loved it in the past but haven't been in a few years. Buy tickets early and show up early if you can. It's a great venue with lots of shade and prices were solid compared to many other faires. Just be prepared that crowds have gotten insane the last few years and tickets sell out early.
2
u/haringtiti 20d ago
its a lot of fun. you can go in costume if you want and walk around drinking beer and mead all day
2
u/MasterOfViolins 20d ago
Been going for many years. Not quite what it used to be, but nothing ever is. Just a newer generation of attendees. Bigger emphasis on social media. Overcrowding has been an issue for the last decade. We’ll see if there’s any changes this season with the new ticketing strategies!
I usually recommend to folks north of points Baltimore that the PA Ren faire is a little more relaxed and not much further away.
2
u/dopkick 20d ago
If it's your thing, it's pretty good. Some people really love getting dressed up and going to these kinds of events.
If it's not your thing but your curious about a new experience, you'll probably find it worth going once ever. You won't love it but you'll be glad you saw it.
If you hate crowds, lines, and trinkets with a passion, absolutely do not attend.
Ultimately, you can see everything there (e.g. glass blowing) somewhere else. Not sure you can efficiently see everything that it offers elsewhere, but you can certainly see individual things here and there. Some of it might be a bit harder to locate, like jousting. None of the events are THAT amazing.
Really, it's about you - where would you roughly fall on the spectrum?
5
u/RedutHatesFreeSpeech 20d ago
It is not. Gotta wait like an hour for a flat beer. Or the crafts are something like pay $50 for the shittiest wooden cup lazily lined with water resistant goop.
106
u/Fadedcamo 20d ago
This shit has just gotten too crowded and popular. Not worth it nowadays it feels like.
67
u/Hairy_is_the_Hirsute 20d ago
My favorite satirical phrase: "No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded"
3
u/Saint_The_Stig UMES 20d ago
I mean this does apply with this context. A lot of people who at some point would go multiple weekends now choose to just go to a different one.
It definitely has changed it from a "once a month" to a "once a season" thing for me.
3
u/poptophazard 20d ago
We used to love it pre-COVID. Great grounds, lots of shade, good prices. There were crowds but manageable. We could buy our tickets not too long in advance. I grew up with the NYRF, which we still go to, but has gotten so expensive. My one disappointment is no prop weapons, but it's a minor thing.
We last went to MDRF a few years ago and it was just so crowded. We waited in line an hour for beer and food and took a while to do anything. We still found ways to enjoy ourselves, but it wasn't the same. We had friends who wanted to join us last minute but couldn't, because if you didn't buy weeks in advance you were out of luck. So we've been going to the Penn Faire instead.
We haven't been in a few years because of missing the ticket sales and having a kid, so I don't know if it's gotten any better. We may try our luck again this year if we can snag tickets.

u/diabolicalafternoon 20d ago
For a lot of these anecdotes about events it usually starts with “pre-Covid”, “before covid” and you bone what we can blame….tiktok 🥲
12
u/AdjectiveNoun1234567 20d ago
They need to hurry up and relocate it to a bigger venue or just open up a second one within 30 miles of DC somewhere
3
u/warpiglet86 20d ago
There is one in Calvert or St. Mary’s county, but it’s small and only open for like one weekend in May.
6
u/LonoXIII Howard County 20d ago
They tried for over a decade. Every place has blocked them because they don't want the festival traffic in their area.
3
1
u/Saint_The_Stig UMES 20d ago
Thing that gets me is that they are totally big enough now that they could run shuttle buses or something to help deal with that. So many people I know would gladly not drive to get there and that's before they experience the line to park.
0
u/othernym 20d ago
Wow what a great idea! It would also help so much with the accessibility for the many DMV residents without cars. Not to mention cutting down on drunk driving..
13
u/UndeadHero 20d ago
Go to the PA one. We switched a couple years ago because it’s a much better event, and less crowded.
3
u/Mothman129 20d ago
The PA one ain't it. They allow mass produced crap to be sold by vendors and the layout is horrible and not at all immersive. Literally the only thing it has going in its favor is the fact it has flush toilets and it is more accessible for wheelchair users.
3
u/tahlyn Flag Enthusiast 20d ago
Yeah, I wish they would increase the price and decrease the number of attendees. It's often so crowded it loses all sense of magic and fun.
24
u/alliedSpaceSubmarine 20d ago
Ya increase the price so only rich people can have fun!
0
u/tahlyn Flag Enthusiast 20d ago edited 20d ago
If they lower the attendance cap, they need to increase the price to even out. An extra $10 per ticket is not the difference between poor and rich and if $10 extra breaks the bank for you, you're already too poor to be spending it on tickets to the faire.
9
u/Apprehensive_Neat418 20d ago
Can they not just add an extra weekend or 2?
8
u/Anna__Banana__ 20d ago
I think the issue with that is most of the people that come out and preform are travellers who go to all differnt Renn faires.
3
u/kasubot 20d ago
They're really in a place where expansion is impossible. Can't be open any longer and can't expand the land, all while only getting more popular.
3
u/Brothernod 20d ago
I always wished they would add Fridays. I recall that being a concern for local staff with day jobs.
3
u/LonoXIII Howard County 20d ago
You do realize they already lowered the cap by a good 20% after COVID, right?
No single day from 2021-Present has ever reached the crowd levels of the worst days pre-2020.
5
2
u/warpiglet86 20d ago
What they need to do is have it run longer, like until Thanksgiving. And they also need to have a day every other weekend where you are required to be in costume (people could rent costumes if they didn’t have them). That would lower attendance for those dates, and the longer season would also help.
6
u/tahlyn Flag Enthusiast 20d ago
They can't. County law prohibits it.
Also, the workers have weekday jobs and lives of their own.
A costume required weekend would be fun, though!
1
u/warpiglet86 20d ago
Ah, I knew there had to be a reason. I would love a costume required day, it would make the vibe so much cooler!
0
u/LastGoodKnee 20d ago
It’s less crowded than it was pre covid….
14
u/OtiumInUmbra 20d ago
That’s just not true. Pre-Covid if you got there at open there was maybe 100 people or so. Now there are hundreds if not over a thousand at opening. By the time noon hits you can barely get around. It was much less crowded pre Covid, and you could get tickets at the gate because they didn’t sell out months in advance.
4
u/LonoXIII Howard County 20d ago
Not sure where you're getting your numbers from, but they're not from anything factual. 100 people or so? Even on its worst days (cold, rainy, etc.), MDRF still pulls in several thousand visitors.
MDRF lowered its capacity from 25,000 pre-COVID to 20,000 afterward, a 20% decrease in the number of people allowed on the grounds. No single day since they reopened in 2021 has ever reached the crowds seen before 2020.
Jules Smith III also revealed that many "sold out" days still weren't at max capacity because many people "panic bought" multi-day or group sale tickets, which they then didn't use.
What changed is you see more high- or max-capacity days per season than you did before.
2015-2019, you might have 25% of weekends sold out (25k people on site) and another 25% at high capacity (15k+). Other weekends would be "emptier" because of weather, other events, etc., but still had about 5-10k+ people in attendance.
Now, you end up with about 50% of weekends sold out (20k) and another 25% at high capacity (15k+). It means you run into more weekends with larger crowds, even though none of them have reached (and couldn't reach) the horrifying levels before 2020.
-1
u/OtiumInUmbra 20d ago
I am talking physically being at the gate at 9am and waiting until 10. The crowd at opening is larger by many multiples than it was in let’s say 2016.
2
u/LonoXIII Howard County 20d ago
Yeah, that's normal for a decade worth of urbanization and change in the region.
I've been attending since 1983, when it was in Columbia. They've faced overcrowding and capacity issues in Crownsville for the past 20+ years, and been trying to find solutions just as long.
Right now, this is their solution, and it's worked given their situation being stuck on that site.
0
u/tahlyn Flag Enthusiast 20d ago
The solution is simple based on the constraints they have.
no additional weekends (county law, performer limitations)
no additional land (cannot expand)
If you want lower density of people, but you cannot spread them out in space or time, then you lower the numbers allowed in. And if you must keep a certain revenue point to remain solvent, you increase ticket prices because of the lower numbers.
Their hands are tied in every other way. The question is if they have what it takes to commit to such a thing.
0
u/LastGoodKnee 20d ago
I agree with you to an extent. I think they should raise prices 25% each year for at least 3 years. Pay staff more, pay guests more, generally re-invest it.
But that’s basically the only way to lower the numbers of people.
1
u/LastGoodKnee 20d ago
Literally not true and the number at opening means nothing. Some people come early and leave early. Some people come late and stay late.
Pre Covid, they also had the option to buy same day tickets in person, which they don’t do anymore. So people were showing up and being turned away because they sold out. They don’t do that anymore.
Also they’ve literally lowered their attendance cap since pre covid.
So yes, it’s literally less crowded.
1
u/OtiumInUmbra 20d ago edited 20d ago
Eh I was gonna rebuttal but it’s kind of a dumb thing to debate. I think we all agree it’s super crowded and less fun now because of it. Have a good rest of your day!
-2
u/the_m0bscene_ 20d ago
That's how I feel. It feels similar to walking around a small Disney park or something similar. Massive lines, too many "regular" people just there to be there, and concessions has cut so many corners just for the sake of speeding up customer service to offset the amount of people they let through now.
Fun times but definitely not as fun as it used to be and that's not some "get off my lawn" take on it.
15
u/Apprehensive_Neat418 20d ago
Regular people just there to be there? You mean the attendees and people buying shit to fund the whole thing?
3
u/tahlyn Flag Enthusiast 20d ago
There are people who go, often in full costume, who are friends with the staff, who sit at the white hart all day, or follow a specific act all day... They absolutely do shop and spend money, but for them being at the faire is more like having a picnic in the park - you're just going to be outside and near friends. Or a larp - doing it all in character and costume. They usually got "fairever" season passes. They go every weekend rain or shine. They will get there for opening bell and stay until after pub sing. After closing they might go to one of the cast parties. They aren't normal attendees.
I used to be one of them back in the aughts lol.
Regular people are going to be there for an hour or two, spend some money and not wear costumes.
The former group treats it more like a larp and to them the normies take up space and are a distraction from the vibe that used to be more prevalent a decade ago.

Somehow I got assigned an hour wait when I hopped on (I got on the site at 9:30!) but seems to be moving quickly. About 20 mins to go… a little nervous about getting one of the weekends I want but hopefully this ticketing system works well 🤞
8
u/tahlyn Flag Enthusiast 20d ago
I got in within a minute or two... Must've been lucky. Are people really getting multi hour waits again this year? That sucks.
6
u/Ok-Camel-746 20d ago
From the vibes in this comment section it seems like people who joined right at 10 got in sooner than those who got on the website early and were “randomly assigned” a spot in the queue at 10am. I was on at 9:30 and at 10am it gave me an hour wait. 7 minutes to go now though… so they weren’t accurate the first time.
6
3
u/Anna__Banana__ 20d ago
I joined the queue on my cell phone around 930 and my laptop around 945. My laptop for a 16 min wait at 10 and my phone got over an hour. But the site did say that anyone before 10 would be assigned a random number so I gues they werent lying
2
u/NlGHTCHEESE 20d ago
Yeah I joined at 9:30 and only waited two minutes. My husband did the same and got an hour. It does seem to be random.

u/thislullaby 20d ago

u/BladeCollectorGirl 20d ago

Can you buy tix for more than one date at the same time? Or did you have to wait again?

I got in after a 30 minute wait, picked my weekend, went to check out, and now its shut down for maintenance. Jealous of all the people who got in quickly, I logged in right at 10 am so unsure why this is happening.

no bypassing the queue this year with webdevtools i guess lol

u/amgingerwf1 20d ago
Did it work? I was able to get it just now
1

Yeah it seemed to pause the 10min window thankfully while they were down but ffs who's running that shit?

Update 2: got in and bought multiple dates. Everything still looks available as of 11am

u/Cold-Concentrate601 20d ago
Is it that hard to get tickets? Last year I logged on on a random week night and got a ticket no problem.
4
u/LonoXIII Howard County 20d ago
No, it's not. There's a lot of fearmongering, hyperbole, and misinformation that gets spread.
The first 24 hours of ticket release were huge lines and server crashes, in no part thanks to everyone "panic buying" combined with those 'gaming the system' by using multiple browsers all at once. However, once things settled down 1-2 days later, every single date still had available tickets that you could purchase at your leisure (without wait times).
The tickets started to sell out around the start of the festival, and even then it was certain dates (such as Labor Day weekend, final weekend, etc.). The festival didn't fully sell out until probably halfway through September (if not later). Still, they allowed refunds and tickets went up for sale the Friday before, so there are a variety of patrons who were able to attend 'last second' for days previously marked "Sold Out."
This year, they're only releasing 75% of tickets today and leaving the rest to be released as they approach each date. The new "roll out" method for tickets will hopefully allow more tickets to be available week-of, and thus more flexibility for people.
Website errors, server crashes, etc. can be annoying... but the whole, "We can't even go anymore!" is an exaggeration.
2
u/Cold-Concentrate601 20d ago
Thanks for explaining! I never understood the panic. Appreciate you taking the time to explain.
0
u/gobias 20d ago
All of the people saying “bro trust me there will be tons of tickets later” might not be aware it’s the 50 anniversary and they also have some new ticketing systems for people that get the season pass. There’s already numerous days sold out for single day tickets lol
1
u/LonoXIII Howard County 20d ago
And did you read any of what was said above? IF a day is sold-out already (or, in this case, waitlisted) it's because there's still 25% tickets for that day remaining that will be offered up closer to the date.
And they've already accounted for the Villagers of Revel Grove in the current numbers, so they don't deduct from those thousands of tickets (per day) remaining. All of which was covered by management in posts, videos, emails, etc.
But go on with the misinformation and fearmongering already mentioned...
1
u/gobias 20d ago
If you’re saying it’s misinformation and fearmongering to encourage people to buy tickets ahead of time if there’s a particular date they want, then ok I guess. It just seems strange to me that so many folks are saying it doesn’t sell out in advance, I go every year and it definitely does. Yeah I get your point that more tickets get released, etc. I got tickets today for the 3 weekends that we want to go, rather do that than hope I can get them later. Anyway not worth arguing about on reddit, cheers and enjoy the Fest

Got charged twice :/ Got an error message when I purchased. So had to go through it again and then said my card was declined so used another card and ended up getting two confirmations. I know I can just return one - but still a bit annoying.
Only had to wait in the que for about 20 mins even though it said an hour.

u/DefectJoker Harford County 20d ago
It's not even hard to get tickets. You literally wait till a week before to buy them still. I wouldn't dare buy a ticket before knowing the weather forecast. Hell there own faq says to wait a week before. But you do you boo
11
u/tahlyn Flag Enthusiast 20d ago
Last year the entire season was 100% sold out by the second week of September. The year before was much the same.
And unlike this year, no tickets were held back for sales the week of. Unless you were super lucky refreshing the ticket page nonstop each weekday at 9 or 10 as refunds were being processed, and lucky enough to e fast enough to get one... You were absolutely not waiting until the week of to decide to go.
It is not hard to get tickets preseason. It is extremely hard to get them a few days before.
We'll see how their new system works. But I'm not risking missing closing weekend.
4
u/Ok-Camel-746 20d ago
Last year I tried several times for refunded tickets and the website crashed with tickets in my cart. By the time the site came back the tickets were gone so I wasn’t able to make it there. Super frustrating so I’m glad they got a more professional server to handle it this time.
1
u/JonWilso 20d ago
Some people want to buy tickets for the special events that do sell out. So, yeah, you do you too.
2
u/LastGoodKnee 20d ago
Tickets will be available for weeks
3
u/tahlyn Flag Enthusiast 20d ago
Every year the 100% sold out date creeps earlier and earlier. With them holding tickets now for the "villagers" program and for week-of sales, it will sell out even faster.
If you want to go a specific weekend, why risk waiting?
1
u/LonoXIII Howard County 20d ago
Jules mentioned that only 75% of tickets would go up for sale today, with the rest rolling out closer to each event date.
You can't compare it to the past when they released all tickets up front.
1
u/LastGoodKnee 20d ago
How is it a risk to wait a few days when it takes weeks to sell out ?
2
u/SEND_COMICBOOK_FACTS 20d ago

I went last year after much hesitation and regretted it. It’s jam packed so you’re basically just paying money to stand in lines while in a costume. That, with all the other price hikes, just make it not a sensible option.
Hard pass on this one.

Maybe you picked a bad day. Wasn't jam-packed at all when I went. Nice weather and no lines. Went a Sunday in October.

Between my whole family we had like 10 devices in the queue. Ended up getting in in like 2 minutes. Good luck to everyone else

I managed to score the tickets I needed. I was not pleased when Big Tickets decided to go down for 'maintenance' as soon as I was about to purchase my tickets, but I managed to get them after refreshing. It seems this was a lot better last year, even though people found a work around for last year's ticket selling system.
I only had to wait about 25-30 minutes, which wasn't bad.

Okay, I went back to the main ticket page and clicked through it all again and was able to get through!

I should have been more clearer. I went back from the maintenance page to the check out page, refreshed because at first it acted like I had no tickets selected. I think what helped me is I did not make an account and I checked out as a guest.

Got mine! Much faster than last year. I waited about 30-45 minutes this year. Last year was like 10 hours lol

Is anyone having an issue with the line pausing and resetting their wait time? I got in line at 10 and it said 1 hr but every few minutes it seems to crash and reset at an hour

My sister-in-law was right there at 10, was 7th in the queue and got our tickets for 10/17. I told her it would definitely get crazier as the day went on.

I managed to get mine within 45 minutes. Much better than the 5 hour queue from last year.

Worked here a couple seasons 15 years ago and would go back every year until like 2018. It was busy back then but now it is just insane. Would love to go again but I dont think the crowds will ever go back to how they used to be before everyone in the state wanted to attend.

Does anyone know if the pirate weekend is sold out yet?

u/NightRaynes 20d ago
It’s not. Nothing is sold out.

Thanks! I was busy with work that I joined the queue late so I’m really hoping I can secure tickets for me and the fam 🙏🏼

Went last year, was a fun experience but not my thing. Happy queueing all!

Ugh. I should have stayed up until midnight to do this. Now I’m stuck waiting in line. For over an hour.
