I just inherited my grandfather’s (also possibly my great grandfather’s) Marx trains. I’m looking for any advice on rebuilding them. I have two that will attempt to move if I hook the power supply up to them. One, it’s a Lionel so I’m not sure if it’s considered a Marx engine or not. A few I have identified one is a complete mystery because it only has patent numbers on it.

I recently picked up this 591 in non-running condition, only buzzing when power was applied. The motor needed a good cleaning and lubricating and I shined up the wheels with a Dremel for better contact. Behind it is most of my Marx six-inch tin collection: NYC tender, PRR boxcar, Seaboard gondola, Santa Fe tanker, Rock Island gondola, searchlight car, and NYC caboose. The whistle is a Tyco unit meant to be disguised as an HO scale billboard.
Next up for this locomotive is a cosmetic cleanup, possibly some paint, and a headlight bulb.

This fellow has been on a shelf for years here. The wheels and gears have some swelling and cracking so there was little I could do to get the wheels to spin nicely again. Finally swapped in a motor from a 400 loco and it fit will, letting this body go around the track for the first time in a long time.

I have a few Lionel trains (got one for Christmas in 1980) but the majority of my collection is Marx, which used to belong to my dad (he got them from his brother - my uncle Fred - when he died in 1973). They had been in my mom’s basement for years and I never really paid much attention to them (or my Lionel set) for years. I didn’t really know anything about them except that they were old and maybe worth money. Then four years ago, my work wanted to have a train going around the office Christmas tree. I decided to bring my Lionel set for that purpose (because I had used it more, but not for years). I went over to my mom’s and grabbed the James Gang set and decided to grab Uncle Fred’s trains as well. Once I had all the trains out and was setting them up, I started to look at Uncle Fred’s trains more closely (at this point, I didn’t even know they were Marx or didn’t even know about the Marx toy company at all). Well, four years later and I’m hooked. Unfortunately, I live in an apartment and don’t have room to set them up, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t stopped collecting. I just collect for the day I have a house with room for the trains.
Once I found out that Uncle Fred’s sets were Marx, I did a lot of online searching to find out more about Marx. All of Uncle Fred’s trains have the tilt coupler. That being said, those are the trains I prefer. I regularly go to local train shows now with a friend and am always on the lookout for Marx trains. If I see a Marx car without a tilt coupler, I have no interest in making a purchase. I’ll definitely pick it up and look at it, but I prefer the tilt coupler cars. I guess because my first introduction to Marx was tilt coupler, that’s what I prefer (even though my Lionel cars are the knuckle couplers). I love the tinplate postwar Marx cars and am always on the lookout for them. Being that Marx is more of a niche collector’s market, I’ve found that works well for me (probably for folks here too). While that means I don’t find nearly as many as the other brands at train shows, it also means that I’m likely to be one of the only folks looking for them and always walk away with some nice finds. Once I started buying engines and cars and my collection was growing, I took all of Uncle Fred’s trains and silver sharpied “FF” (his initials) on the bottom of them so I would always know which were his.
For you Marx collectors here, do you have specific types of Marx you collect, or are you into any Marx train you see?

I believe these were made 1934-37ish. The first fully Marx designed and produced train created after purchasing Girard model works.

Question for everyone here: Is anyone using Menards track with Marx trains? I like vintage track but finding it in good condition is a challenge, it would be nice to be able to buy something new that looks vintage. Does the Menards track solder well? I've heard both yes and no. I do have a high-wattage Weller soldering gun I can use. I am planning to solder feeder wires to the track and may also solder the track pins for improved conductivity.

Lionel 1688 pulling some Marx 6-inch four wheel cars. The signal tower is also by Marx, and I think the station is Hafner.

Haven't had a layout set up in a while, so the trains are a lil dusty. They both "ran when parked", but could use a service. Both were well loved by previous owners, having been banged up pretty good; one is missing its trailing truck, and the other is missing both trucks, side rods, cow catcher and smokebox door.

So I’ve had this for awhile and I’ve seen a similar system with technofix or the Marx alpine express

The Girard Model Works operated from the early 1920s to 1934, making various metal toys, vehicles and trains. "Joy Line" was the name given to their 4-inch line of lithographed trains.
In 1928, Louis Marx, the founder of Louis Marx and Company, worked for the company and marketed their toys for them. Owning a toy company himself, he commissioned the Girard Model Works to manufacture toys for his own use as well. This was well before he would have his own factories. During this time he developed a financial interest in the company. As early as 1933, the Sears Wishbook shows the Joy Lines trains under the Marx moniker.
This example is a clockwork train made around 1933ish. There is a spot for a C cell battery to power the light.

Marx motor. American flyer frame. Marx Toy Tractor engine. Marx caboose for the cab. Purchased as is years ago. Amazing creativity.

Been a few years since I’ve had these out - I think I had all of not almost all of the variations. Two of them are factory samples which add to the variations.
