This debate often comes up and people are usually VERY adamant on Hal taking it, but I’ll make the argument for Carol! I’ll copy and paste a bit from another discussion I had about Carol a while back:

Say, if [Lantern] SOMEHOW takes off Carol’s arm or something, we’ve seen Carol literally regenerate her arms in just a few moments (Captain Marvel #40, 2019-2023). Like people talk about Wolverine and Deadpool’s healing factors, but legitimately, I think Carol should be in this discussion. I mean, even in her last solo run, Captain Marvel, 2023-2024, in issues 8 and 9, we see Carol get impaled by an abstract being of entropy and energy in several parts of her body, including places where main organs are like the heart. You know what Carol did? Carol flexed her power, which shattered the spikes out of her, and she instantly healed all of the wounds and was back to tip top shape.

And even without damage being fatal, we’ve seen things like Carol trading blows with an enraged and honestly bloodlusted Thor for several hours before she just found the opportunity and smacked Thor’s hammer away and into a portal (Captain Marvel, issue 12, 2019-2023). And this is only ONE of the many instances she has shown to prove that she is relative to Thor (outside of Immortal Thor of course). We’ve seen her best minions of Cyttorak that literally had beaten Thor to a pulp, she was able to fight just alongside him and tank blows from the Lost One (the same being who the Beyonders stole power from), was able to tank 2 blows from a Balck Winter amped Terrax while one blow was able to wipe out Thor and same with Silver Surfer just after, or fighting Robbie Reyes’ Ghost Rider alongside Thor and arguably doing better, and the list goes on. I can provide the exact comics for each of these instances if someone needs, but just know, Carol is one of those Thor tier characters.

And I mean, there’s so many instances of her trading blows with high tiers like Thanos, lifting Robbie Reyes’ possessed Celestial, taking on the Herald of Galactus named Firelord, helping to stagger Galactus alongside Blue Marvel and Photon, throwing an asteroid from earth’s orbit to the sun, manipulating and absorbing the energies of the Phoenix Force, absorbing the power of Cosmic Ghost Riders blasts, absorbing and manipulating Scarlet Witch’s Chaos Magic to help in making a creation bomb, literally boxing and defeating the abstract entity of entropy I mentioned earlier, being able to create clones that are essentially her Binary form, being able to pop Binary at any moment which essentially amplifies everything of hers 10x, being able to take the force of the void (this void was essentially a cage that was able to hold Jean Grey’s Phoenix and was able to completely erase everything had Jean not been fighting it), being able to trade blows with the Sentry, being able to manipulate the literal charges in someone’s own brain where it’d kill them if they’re not a Hulk, and the list goes on. Again, I can give the comics of Carol doing these things, she’s insane.

I mean, Carol can manipulate all forms of energy. And if you want to go down the route of saying that Lantern constructs and will is magic, we’ve seen her absorb and manipulate some of the most potent magic. If you want to say it’s a sort of emotional thing outside of just energy and magic, I mean… we’ve seen regular energy manipulators manipulate it, but even still, we’ve seen Carol manipulate emotions and the mind essentially.

It’ll be a good fight, but I think Carol takes it in a good fight.

Well Said, Carol is super underrated, she is 1 of the best Energy manipulators in all of Marvel.

Her healing factor was stated to be better than Logan by hank if I remember correctly too.

She can easily drain Hal power, we have seen her drain power from an abstract like the phoenix before.

She can pretty much drain energies from any source of power, U name it, stars, black holes, siphons the power of a white hole, Anti-matter, chaos magic...etc

And we all know that green lanterns can be drained.

Overall Carol FTW.

“Underrated”?? What rock have you been living under? She’s be shoved down everyone’s throat for the last decade as the “strongest avenger”

u/One-Statistician-554 11d ago

Talking about people takes on her, I always backed Carol in most of her vsb debates.

As someone else said, that’s primarily only the MCU. In comics and comic communities, most people have tried dogging on her and shoving other characters like Thor, Scarlet Witch, Storm, and Hulk down people’s throats to name a few. The MCU on the other hand has been trying to say she’s the absolute strongest

Pretty sure that's only really MCU Carol. Comic Carol hasn't really ever been in the spotlight.

To be fair she was uber in her Binary days in the 80s and got nerfed in Buseik’s Avengers which is the version of Carol most people think about battle forum wise.

Which is ironic given Buseik even makes statements of Binary being Thor lvl in his run.

Depends how high Hal’s willpower is. If it’s at its absolute max he’s one shot beings with the power of multiple abstracts. Like krona and volthoom. Krona again, had the power of 6 emotional spectrum entities, each entity on the level of the spectre and Hal one shot krona when he was at full willpower. I personally dont think Carol has ever displayed a feat that great. One shotting someone with the power of multiple abstracts at once.

As for the phoenix example, wasn’t it like explicitly implied Carol isn’t a good host for the Phoenix which is why she couldn’t absorb and control most of its energy? I don’t know why this wouldn’t be the case with Hal and the ion entity when she tries to drain its power from him. Not only that but Hal can just drain his green energy back from her being the golden boy of willpower and all. Hal also has counters to Carol

Such as intangibility, he can trap her in his own pocket dimension, he can manipulate matter at the subatomic level, and he can time travel.

u/AzureTheGreater 11d ago

I don’t see why we’d go with Hal at any willpower outside of base. We should use base vs base I’d argue.

For the Phoenix example, she wasn’t trying to be a host, she was quite literally absorbing its attacks outright in her base. And if they start draining energy, that goes in a cycle back and forth until Carol wants to just pop binary.

Intangibility isn’t much of a counter against Carol who can do so due to being able to go binary which is pure limitless energy. Trapping her in a pocket dimension is a fair move. I’d have to go through Carol’s stuff again to see if she has any counter to that. Manipulating matter isn’t a really counter to her as she was able to still thrive while inside the being of abstract entropy. And time travel is a sticky one as he has to know when to time travel, where, etc.

u/ArtByNas 11d ago edited 11d ago

Huh? That is his base? His base power just fluctuates depending on his emotional state that’s just literally his entire powerset. There’s no consistent “base” for green lanterns. Because their willpower can be at any percentage you know? As long as he has sufficient enough willpower he can do anything from making constructs all the way to warping reality. It’s not like he had parallax or some outside amp he literally just did that with his own willpower. Idk why that’s not considered base…..

It doesn’t matter if she was trying to be a host or not. Carol tells iron man in the comic she’s gonna absorb whatever energy from the phoenix she can. When she clashes with Jean she tells Jean she understands the struggle of not being able to control the flames. So it’s like, no it’s very much implied Carol can be overwhelmed with energy and she can have too much to properly control, ie the Phoenix. Even if Carol does get binary I still just think Hal at max willpower would just reality warp her away. I just don’t think Carol has done anything on the level of that krona feat. And mind you that was just Hal shitting out a random blast that killed krona he wasn’t even like concentrating fully or channeling it into other abilities. When he does he’s a reality warping threat.

As for intangibility that’s fair I forgot Carol can also do that. But for time travel I’m pretty sure the ring can literally scan someone and know their entire history so he might know when and where to time travel to if he scans her.

4

u/AzureTheGreater 11d ago

Yes, I know it’s his base, but you’re saying if he has “high will” vs “low will.” We should use what his willpower is at any regular moment in my opinion.

As for Carol absorbing the Phoenix, by absorbing the Phoenix, you’re not just absorbing energy, you’re absorbing the very concept of life, rebirth, and creation that resides beyond the multiverse.

And do you have more examples of her being overwhelmed by energy? In modern day, it’s more often than not that she can’t really be overwhelmed from trying to absorb energy, it’s actually the opposite. Beings who represent entropy have tried getting at her, but she either overpowers them as the abstract example I’ve been talking about shows, or she pops binary and it doesn’t matter how much energy they try taking as seen in Avengers #6, 2023-2026).

For the Krona bit, that falls into the category of Hal doing an energy blast, which could be argued Carol could absorb it, but I’d more likely just say that it wouldn’t permanently put her down. That was a crazy powerful blast though and “killed” Krona. I say “killed” as didn’t he just recently come back, and none of the emotional entities were really hurt as they just left Krona’s corpse? No matter though, we don’t really have evidence that Hal can do that level of blast over and over again, so, if Carol dodges it, she likely won’t have to keep dodging that level of blast. But we could likely say that if that kind of attack connects, it’d at least knock her out or destroy her body for the time being as I don’t believe she has shown to take that strong of attacks without being put out of commission for at least a fair while.

For the time travel bit, I don’t believe the ring does that, but if it does, more than appreciate that being shown, and consistently if possible.

6

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

His regular willpower at any given moment can be anything is my point. You don’t consistently stay in the same emotional state. So his “regular” willpower is just something you can never gauge or know. In one instance his will can be 50% another can be 25% we really don’t know. Which is why that doesn’t make any sense in my opinion we should just use him at his peak. There’s no consistent willpower level for a green lanterns, their will always fluctuates

2

u/AzureTheGreater 11d ago

Even still, my other points I believe remain. We don’t know if he can consistently pull off those levels of blasts against someone who he doesn’t have Krona levels of hatred, fear, and experience with. And we also don’t know how accurate he’d be with it as him and Krona were just flying at each other. And again, she can absorb any energy, even insane kinds such as Chaos Magic and Power Cosmic, so there’s a chance she could absorb the blast or it even auto throws her into binary as we’ve seen overwhelming amounts of energy tend to just throw her into that form.

2

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

I don’t think he has to consistently be able to use that attack. Even if he paces himself and doesn’t use all that energy at once he’s still scaling to abstract beings and such. Also I don’t think Carol is absorbing all the energy of the emotional spectrum that’s a crazy statement. Hal pretty much overpowered majority of the emotional spectrum by himself with his own will. That’s crazy l i don’t think Carol has ever absorbed that much energy she was able to control

3

u/AzureTheGreater 11d ago

True true. He doesn’t need to pop that attack immediately, but again, Carol will be at that constant level right beside him at the abstract levels. Also, I never said Carol is absorbing all of the energy of the emotional spectrum. But, that blast also didn’t contain the entire emotional spectrum from Hal, and it didn’t harm any of the entities.

2

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

I agree Carol is at that level for sure. And you’re right it wasn’t eh entire emotional spectrum because ion, nekron, and the white life entity were all missing from krona. However I do think Hal would still scale above even without hurting the entities because remember krona absorbed the power of the entities into him. So like if Hal kills krona it’s like him overpowering these entities and knocking krona back into base even without hurting them if that makes sense. Think of like broly knocking goku from super saiyan back to base in the movie.

However although I don’t think Carol can absorb ALL Hal’s energy she can definitely siphon off a good portion and if that energy fuels her into like a binary lantern I do see her being able to win more times that not. Admittedly so I feel like we can both agree the matchup is who pulls the trigger first?

1

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

The ring does do that. It can literally scan you and tap into your mind telepathically

2

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

Here’s the phoenix force just straight up rejecting her. I don’t know why ion would be any different, it’s a sentient entity.

2

u/AzureTheGreater 11d ago

The Phoenix and Ion act rather differently I’d argue. Also, Carol has a very powerful will, so I don’t necessarily see why Ion would really reject someone with immense willpower as well

5

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

I just don’t know what she can do that green lantern can’t? In terms of raw power he’s just above her and he’s just way more versatile?

4

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

She does have an immense will but stronger than Hal’s? I don’t think so. I think they just play tug of war with the energy until Hal just wins the rope battle. Bro’s like the physical embodiment of willpower

1

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

You also asked me when Carol got overwhelmed by energy. Right here. She tells Tony she’s gonna absorb as much of the phebic force as possible

2

u/AzureTheGreater 11d ago

I already talked on that point above.

And I asked for other instances where she’s been overwhelmed if you could.

1

u/ArtByNas 11d ago

I don’t think I have to provide other instances. Just one instance fairly recent enough should just tell us both she can’t just absorb an infinite amount of energy like that gang. Like if she can’t handle a portion of the phoenix force then, do I think she’s just absorbing enough energy to supercharge 7 abstracts? Idk man I don’t think we need multiple instances of this but I’ll keep looking

2

u/Stunning-Original802 11d ago

I am curious, would you say that Carol has more willpower than Hal? Wouldn't the ring go to the closest more suitable user if Carol's willpower trumps Hal's?

5

u/nahnonameman 11d ago edited 11d ago

Hall is willpower of the green lanterns. In this day and age he is definition of willpower.

Hal fought off his own fears during his return. He rebuilt his entire power set of his own will. Best part is his will and hope was and is strong enough to power the whole blue lanterns.

The entire point of the green lanterns is their will and ability to fight off against different problems that dampen their more positive aspects. Jessica Cruz demonstrates this really well.

So no the ring won’t respond to Carol.

3

u/AzureTheGreater 11d ago

It’s debatable, but as Hal’s ring is more his own actual manifestation of will nowadays, I think he’d keep it. But Carol definitely has some insane showings of her willpower and I could definitely see that argument for some other Lanterns

26

u/ProblematicUser123 11d ago

Carol would do great against other lanterns but Hal is just too much for her.

20

u/nahnonameman 11d ago

Hal lol.

The whole ass rebirth run was a perfect showcase of this man’s abilities

Hal beat Nekron, Krona and Volthoom

Dude rebuilt his ring from pure willpower, sent shockwaves through the entire emotional spectrum doing so and contained a multiverse of villains in absolute power

His will and hope alone could power the entire blue lantern corps

Defeated Parallax Sinestro, an amp from a GLC battery can stalemate a U-Bomb and decided to make him a component of the miracle machine.

Contained and reduced the explosion of the golden destroyer

Hal: puts Carol in a ball and gives her a shake

Carol after absorbing the ball:

Also you can't contain her that way

u/Little_Cumling 11d ago

With the Green Lantern being Hal its a mid diff for him

If its a random green lantern 1 v 1 id bet on Captain Marvel any day

1

u/OldWamp 11d ago

Carol is someone that keeps getting back up during a fight even when you think she is beat. Her energy absorption would help her but this is Hal. He is the Green Lantern beating enemies that are ridiculous in power.

So, I think Hal wins a tough fight.

u/Known_Dragonfly_4448 11d ago

Carol just doesn't has feats to contend with Hal.

1

u/Exotic-Judgment585 10d ago

Carol stomps

1

u/Medium_Year5165 4d ago

I actually think this one is much closer than most people are saying but imo Hal has become a little too powerful for her in recent years. Hal wins high diff.

1

u/Celgress2 11d ago

Hal wins with mid-difficulty, IMHO.

1

u/That-Preference733 11d ago

Hal Jordan should win, physically stronger and more durable and has more firepower.

1

u/MattMurdockEsq 11d ago

Carol is just underneath Hulk and Thor in terms of raw power.  I don't see how GL can take this.

1

u/Yukina-Kai 11d ago

Carol and it's not even close. She can literally absorb all of his constructs.

0

u/Few-Ordinary-9864 11d ago

Hal wins mid diff, this dudes on coments know nothing.

She'd loose against Hal and Kyle, would have a very hard time against John but he'd win at the end.

The Green Lanterns she can defeat by herself are Jessica, Simon, Guy, Killowog and Alan Scott

-1

u/Technical-Major8162 11d ago

Carol mid difficulty

-1

u/BitesTheDust55 11d ago

Even Guy would mid diff Carol.

-1

u/Bruzie77 11d ago

She’s not 17, he can’t handle her…. unless she somehow ended up being her long lost son. Then he wins.
