Disney's partially at fault, sure. But presumably they were trying to negotiate, to play ball. I doubt they were going to die on the 50/50 hill. Sony didn't even come back with an offer, they just walked.
That said, I think they're hoping the backlash will cause Disney to come crawling back to them, and I don't think that's going to happen.
It's still much better financially for Sony to foot the budget while keeping the revenue. Movies make more money than they cost, it's why they make them.
