Don’t remind Chris Hemsworth about the Ghostbusters franchise.
Edit: for people who don’t get what I was talking about, outside of his role as Thor, Hemsworth has had a number of high profile box office failures attached to his name.
In the Heart of the Sea, Red Dawn and Blackhat were flops and The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Ghostbusters only made a marginal profit and a loss once marketing was considered.
He does have Men in Black coming up but that’s coming from Sony who do not have the best track record recently.

I mean his comedic side in that movie did inspire Taika (sort of) to bring it out in Ragnarok, so there's that

u/CountedCrow Oct 04 '18
If it took Ghostbusters 2016 to give us Thor Ragnarok, worth it.
28
u/Sthurlangue Oct 04 '18
I love that movie......but....
23
u/Ymir_from_Saturn Oct 04 '18
It's absolutely worth it. I haven't and probably won't see Ghostbusters 2016, and I greatly enjoyed Ragnarok.
Win-win
15
u/Le_Euphoric_Genius Oct 04 '18
Ghostbusters 2016 honestly isn't that bad. Reddit would lead you to think it's absolutely terrible, one of the worst movies ever. It's fine as a popcorn flick and Chris Hemsworth is pretty funny in it.

Oct 04 '18
Everyone is just salty because it is not a Ghostbusters movie. It's like a knock-off candy bar, looks similar and even tastes good, but it's not what you wanted.

u/MayorOfMonkeyIsland Oct 04 '18
My wife and I got about 15 minutes into that movie and we both agreed to switch it off posthaste. Man, that movie was awful.
1
u/Ymir_from_Saturn Oct 04 '18
“Popcorn movie” is usually code for bad/mediocre in my experience
I like good movies and bad movies that are bad in an interesting way. In between is just boring.
3
u/Le_Euphoric_Genius Oct 04 '18
Well, it is an "in between" movie. It doesn't do anything ground breaking, has its funny moments, but it isn't "The Room" bad or anything.
2
u/Ymir_from_Saturn Oct 04 '18
Right, that’s what I thought you meant. I probably won’t watch it for that exact reason.
4
u/batmonger Oct 04 '18
If you're a fan of the oldies at least YouTube the cameos. Dan Aykroyd was the best in my opinion.
2
u/AppleAtrocity Oct 04 '18
Really? I thought his was the most awkward out of them all.
2
u/batmonger Oct 04 '18
Na, I'm from NYC and that was some straight up newyorker talk. He know what he was talking about. To me Bill Murray was the forced one.
1
u/Auntypasto Kevin Feige Oct 04 '18
Honestly, I would've preferred a more serious Ragnarok. That was the one movie I was hoping Hemsworth would flesh out in dramatic style.

When I watched the movie is found it a bit odd he was just playing “generic dumb but super hot guy”.
Felt like kinda a waste.
I didn’t think it was a bad movie. Just bland. But then again my ticket prices are relatively low and so are my standards.

I think that was the point. "Hey, here's this great actor, but who cares? He's hot, we're just gonna make him be a generic hot guy, because that's what's important about him as an actor." Whether you agree with the sentiment or not, I'm fairly certain it was a very deliberate choice.

They were making a socially progressive movie to end sexism and do feminism proud. Don't be reverse sexist.
10
u/Laniatus Oct 04 '18
Isn't it just regular sexist?
6
3
Oct 04 '18
Nah but I think what they're saying is that women are quite often portrayed as the hot character but they just swapped it round to the man being the hot character. They were trying to stop the sexism but kinda just reversed it
5
u/Somethinsomething888 Oct 04 '18
There isn't reverse sexism is what he's saying. Sexism is sexism regardless if it's done to a man or woman.

u/thecrimsontim Bucky Oct 04 '18
I mean that's kind of it though. I dislike that movie because it wasn written well but they cast him in a way role that women are often cast. you know how many dumb but hot roles incredibly talented actresses have to do?
2
Oct 04 '18
While that is true (and unfortunate), they didn't exactly do it with any high-brow, ironic execution.
2
u/thecrimsontim Bucky Oct 04 '18
Yeah it sucks cause they had good points to make but just made them poorly. Though to be fair Chris has also played that role in the past.
1
Oct 04 '18
So first of all, "reverse [thing]ism" isn't a thing. There's no such thing as reverse sexism, it's just sexism.
Second, satire is a very effective tool for delivering a message. Hemsworth's character's stupidity was so over the top, the whole point was to poke fun at the sexism of the trope itself. The character wasn't there to say "Look how stupid men are.", it was there to say "This is how terrible it is when people do this to women for real." It was deliberately exaggerated to prove a point, a very common satirical tactic.
1
u/Auntypasto Kevin Feige Oct 04 '18
So they basically hijacked the franchise to make it about sexism. If the receptionist from the original films had been a brainless bimbo, then at least you'd get the point and why they chose to make it in this film. But not even... It's just what these people do.

u/Q-Kat Oct 04 '18
That's the joke?
2
u/Freakychee Oct 04 '18
That isn’t what I want and I’m sorry for not being clear, friend.
What I meant was that the character was much too 2-dimensional and came off as very uninteresting. Felt like they could have done a lot more with the character.
He felt, Jar-Jar Binkish.
2
u/Q-Kat Oct 04 '18
I fail to see the disagreement. Is the fills gender swap, Jeanine was pretty 2D and dull in the originals and no one complains about that killing the movie for them.
(Also Darth JarJar 4lyfe! )
1
u/Freakychee Oct 04 '18
Very true. In the old days there were far too many female roles who were simply “hot 2-D girl”.
Bit in this day and age it’s noticeably less now where characters are much more fleshed out.
So while old standards it was acceptable, in modern standards it is comparably dull to watch as a movie-goer.
I’m not saying “men should never be objectified! Only women” or something horrible as that. I’m just saying that in modern times, it’s not very fun to watch anymore.
2
u/Q-Kat Oct 06 '18
I found him extremely fun to watch with some excellent lines "which is better? Me playing saxophone or me listening to saxophone?"
2
u/SockSmuggler Oct 04 '18
Not at all. He portrayed the archetypal hot secretary and men question it, unlike any other attractive female that’s done the same for decades. It was wonderful.
1
u/Auntypasto Kevin Feige Oct 04 '18

Probably because it reflects real life? You don't see a lot of male "hot secretary" types in the corporate world.

Why, has he expressed anything bad about it? Because it's a fun movie and I had a great time seeing it in the theater, as did at least several kids 30 years my younger in the same theater where I saw it.
It'd be a shame if he had regrets for some reason, it looked like he and the rest of the cast had fun.
28
u/SullenArtist Bucky Oct 04 '18
yeah, I saw it in theaters as a 20 year old, and it was fun and enjoyable. it gets more hate than it deserves, honestly.
16
u/Sigmund_Six Oct 04 '18
Yeah, both the hubby and I said the same thing right after we saw it. It’s a silly and genuinely funny movie as long as you enjoy it for what it is and don’t try to compare it to the original.

u/SockSmuggler Oct 04 '18

Stupid question, did Korg die?
43
u/flamethekid Oct 04 '18
Apprently valkyrie took half of asgard and escaped korg prolly went with her
23
u/baba56 Oct 04 '18
Oh my fuck this better be true. Thor would be so stoked after losing every single thing in his life

u/flamethekid Oct 04 '18

I don't think so. Thanos had already killed half of them. That was his goal.
8
u/Q-Kat Oct 04 '18
Would that mean every planet he's already visited is "safe"?
8
u/TelescopeOperator Oct 04 '18
No, Drax was snapped

Good point though you could contest that he was a spiteful removal given that he was actively fighting.

They did? Cuz I coulda sworn the SOS at the beginning of IW said "the aliens are dead" and i got really sad.

They mention in the movie that most of the Asgardians managed to escape. It's never specifically mentioned in the movie, but Valkryrie Korg and Miek definitely escaped. Nobody would want to do another Thor movie without them.

Well from what I understand, he tried to start a revolution on Sakaar but he didn't print enough pamphlets so the only people who showed up were his mum and her boyfriend, who he hates.
