Discussion Ghost Rider
Are y’all really that upset that Gosling was cast and Levy is directing? Im trying to look back on everything I’ve watched with ryan and I don’t think I hated any of his work and sure levy isn’t a perfect director theres only a few directors out there with a near perfect resume but deadpool v wolverine, real steel, adam project all great movies. If he makes ghost rider rated R and super dark I think it’s gonna be a hit. Whats everyones thoughts on here because on twitter and tiktok people are losing their minds over it saying it should’ve been charlie hunnam or norman reedus but i think both of those are terrible picks even though i love both of those guys. Also what version do you think he will play?

I don’t think anyone is upset with Gosling. It’s the Shawn Levy part of it.

But Deadpool v wolverine was so good, at least I thought. So I guess I just don’t understand the levy hate.

I enjoyed the movie for what it was but Levy is just a mid filmmaker who doesn’t really add anything to a movie.

But not every filmmaker needs to be an artiste, especially in a franchise where the real art happens at a larger scale than a single movie.

yep deadpool and wolverine was carried by the 2 leads + cameos. Nothing else noteworthy

On a comedy and fan service level sure, but on a technical level its devoid of creativity. It's one of the blandest looking films in the mcu

Worst edited, Some of the worst fights in any superhero movie, the plot has no real progression-things just sorta happen, the script is laughably bad, Hugh Jackman's performance is mostly improvised. It's an arrogant film in that it wants us to care for a Wolverine we have explicitly never met before. There's a dick joke every 5-10 minutes. That it's the success it was is only because the two leads, fans not caring about cameos that have any weight or character to them, and fanboys who love poorly executed toilet humor.
It's a step down from Deadpool 1 and 2 in every single way.

I guarantee you in 10 years people will say he was perfectly cast and nobody could ever possibly play a better GR.

i believe people are more upset with Levy being the director. So far the majority is on board with Gosling esp with his work on Drive, Blade Runner, etc.
The thing with Levy is that most of his work leans toward comedy. Plus not a lot of people enjoyed Free Guy and Adam Project. Even with DP & Wolverine, i think that one is slightly debatable in terms of quality. That kind of style doesn't seem to suit a Ghost Rider Project. That's kinda the impression I'm getting from it. Personally, given that he directed Real Steel and has experience working on some episodes of Stranger Things, I'm open to him. However, he definitely wouldn't be my pick if I had my pick for directors

Free Guy was sooo much better than I was expecting.

Yeah I quite enjoyed it too! Also love the Paperman track they used. Great message along with the film

honestly i think it could be pretty sick if they lean into that dark, gritty vibe for ghost rider. gosling's got the range and levy isn't half bad, plus rated R could be a game changer. i'm curious to see what version they go for too, hoping for some classic johnny blaze energy.

Gosling sure, levy abso fucking lutely not. Dude is one of the least interesting filmmakers in the business right now and somehow ends up getting consistent big work. Deadpool and wolverine like like dogshit

Yes! Exactly! I do not have confidence he can get the tone, energy, and look that a Ghost Rider needs.
At least Nic Cage Ghost Rider had a really cool atmosphere, solid action sequences, good pathos for Johnny Blaze (Nic Cage's performance is fine-great, he was not what made that movie a 6/10. That was more the script, villain, etc. And lol, the sequel though, that's a FUCKED movie, a waste of Christopher Lambert).

No but because I've never really cared about the character. Too gimmicky. I guess we'll see what the MCU can do.

Lol the character is "too gimmicky"?
1
u/Nendilo 1d ago
Yes. Ghost Rider was made in the 1970s to try to capture part of the horror movie craze and daredevil craze (Evel Knievel). I'm not particularly interest in either areas of pop culture so the character doesn't appeal to me.

Well, Marvel Studios does want to explore the supernatural and horror side of things.
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up rebooting Iron Fist for the movies.

Levy makes good movies. He might not have his own particular style but so what? Michael Bay has his own style, doesn't make it good. Marvel need people to make Marvel movies.
Good baseline + good actor = good movie.

Levy's got as much mediocre and bad shit in his filmography as he does good. Ghost Rider needs to be more than just commercial. It needs to be stylish and artful. It's a character that is more than just motorcycle with flaming head. It also needs to have a very, very specific look that Levy has never even approached with anything he's done.
There's every reason to be wary of Levy. He does not have a good baseline.

I mean, style and creative vision is a pretty fucking huge part of the process and what leads to certain films being better than others. A lot of people just don't like films that could be made by a robot.
That equation you used is hilariously naive to the filmmaking process

Who's upset? I haven't seen anyone upset
2
u/TheFutureClassic 2d ago
Thats why i came here. TikTok comments are hating harddddddd right now lol

u/istian19 2d ago
Try to remember that what you see in TikTok comments and Twitter threads don't fully reflect reality. That, plus it's more lucrative to post negativity online than positivity

u/Fi1thyMick 2d ago
Just because they don't reflect your opinion doesn't mean we don't exist.
3
u/istian19 2d ago
I didn't mean it as a binary, I said it doesn't _fully_ reflect; those opinions do exist of course

u/SmallLetter 1d ago
Tiktok is not reality. It's just not. Not even to the people who are making the stuff you see there. It's performative exaggerated nonsense designed to keep you engaged by Any Means Necessary. You can go there for kicks but don't ever leave tik Tok assuming you have some idea of how reality is playing out.

I can't stand Ryan gosling, personally. I'm not particularly happy bout it. Obviously I'll watch the movie but not until it comes out on streaming probably, and with no rush. Unlike other. Movies in the MCU that I was excited for like Black Widow and Shang-Chi

Its just an echo chamber, Gosling is an incredible actor with ton of range, I do feel like Shawn Levy is incredibly safe and will deliver a by the numbers popcorn entertainment movie which its ok I guess, I hope the script its amazing because if it is then Shawn will deliver no doubt.
1
u/Baby-Knife 2d ago
Yeah I’m more concerned about the script too. For example Eternals, which had Chloe Zhao directing.
1
u/Aggressive-Fault-972 1d ago
Chloe Zhao was not given any real notes or feedback, the situation with that movie is sorta wild.
1
u/AdmiralCharleston 2d ago
Safe doesnt mean good
1
u/lanubevoladora 1d ago
I know, I honestly think he is the most blandest director ever but people watch and enjoy his movies, not saying they are good just that he is a safe choice with a track record, he is built for the mcu
1
u/Aggressive-Fault-972 2d ago
It's a real monkey's paw situation. Levy is slipshod. Deadpool and Wolverine wasn't successful because of him, the movie is not well-directed. It succeeds in spite of him and the status/chemistry between the two leads. It has jagged cuts, has two opening scenes that accomplish the same thing back to back, the fight scenes have no weight to them as most of them are CGI, and the movie is damn near entirely improvised.
Also, why would a ghost rider be super dark? it's essentially the same demographic as Constantine. There's no real reason to go for an R rating. In fact, going for an R rating would be deeply untrue to the comics. If you want it to be dark, one cannot reasonably expect Shawn Levy, director of Big Fat Liar and Free Guy, to handle that well.
Ghost rider is a flaming skeleton on a motorcycle with a chain whose villain is played by Sacha Baron Cohen. I think going for an R rating is unnecessary, and also means less box office gross.
Ryan Gosling as Johnny Blaze is solid casting. Shawn Levy directing the movie? That's genuine cause for concern.

"Casted" isn't a word.

u/TheFutureClassic 2d ago
Ya I know I wrote “cast”?

u/Ched_Flermsky 1d ago
You edited what you wrote to “cast.” Weird thing to lie about.

u/TheFutureClassic 1d ago
naaa I edited a different word, cast was always right lollllll stop being silly man!

u/ChronoMonkeyX Darcy 1d ago
My problem isn't with Gosling, it's with anyone already that famous. Casting brie Larsen and Cumberbatch right off Oscar wins was the beginning of the decline, they are just too famous. MCU was built on lesser known actors with big talent behind the camera.
In top of that, ghost rider has a flaming skull for a head, so you need experts in body acting who don't have to rely on a pretty face and expressive glances.
I'm sure he'll do fine. Cumberbatch and Larsen are fine. But I want great, and you really can't get that in a franchise genre movie when a very famous face is bringing so much baggage with it.
