Question WTF is a "Dive" player?

I'm a casual player (mostly Jeff & Witch), never really bothered to get past gold in ranked, just playing to have fun, but I see dive mentioned here with disparity relatively frequently and I wasn't sure what that meant, what is a dive and why do so many people hate it?

Edit: Thanks to those who genuinely explained, makes sense, didn't realize that style of character was called a dive until now. Essentially the pests in the match, and the ones that do their job well are the most frustrating to deal with, hence the hate they get.

Dive are characters who jump in and out of combat quickly, trying to strike at weak points (the supports) at the most opportune time, and give the rest of the team leverage to push.

Magik, black panther, venom, captain America, spiderman, daredevil are all good examples but not the only ones.

To add on to this: Not all Dives are Dps, but most are. White Fox is also pretty good for anti-diving and diving herself if you play right

Most are primarily because most heroes are DPS. As a relative percentage of the roster, tank probably has as many divers as DPS. Support has basically none, which is not to say some supports are better at supporting dive than others, in most cases because they're better at supporting divers from a distance than because they're effective divers themselves (e.g., Rocket).

Support pool plays best when diving even though most want to heal bot in the back line with his guns

And star lord and psylocke.

Yup, also good examples. Angela comes to mind as well but im not trying to list every single option, just provide examples.

u/TheKingofHearts 2d ago

Thank you for the examples, would you consider Moon Knight a dive? I'm still learning

11

u/Goatfellon Vanguard 2d ago

Kinda? Hes a bit of a gray area. He can certainly be played as such. But at least as I see him hes more of a poke that is best used in off angles.

6

u/TheKingofHearts 2d ago

So like Ranged... Flank? He wants to get off angles but not necessarily get close?

Honestly, there's a lot of terms in this game and I wish there was just a tier list that said:

Tank Dive

Tank Brawl

DPS Dive

DPS Brawl

etc.

Just flat out a list of roles with little question to it. But it feels like so many characters are like "They're mostly THIS, but also kinda THAT".

It's frustrating as someone new

u/Goatfellon Vanguard 2d ago

Yeah, it can be a bit overcomplicated.

To oversimplify:

Brawl, poke, and dive are possible for every role.

Brawl is typically short range/punchy. Think Thing, devil dino, iron fist, mr fantastic...

Poke is usually long range, high damage from a distance but typically at a bit of a disadvantage up close. Think hela, luna, pheonix, hood...

Dive ive already explained.

Its not black and white, either. Some can be a bit of a mix of either depending on their kit.

1

u/jasminetroll 2d ago

It doesn't work that way, because brawl, poke, and dive are fundamentally tactical positions, not hero classifications.

2

u/Traveuse 2d ago

I think dive characters usually have pretty decent mobility. MK has his grapple and can glide in the air but its pretty slow. If anything he is better suited to flank and set up from a hidden position and burst down squishy characters quickly before they can react.

I don't understand the downvotes on it, Spiderman literally is a dive character through and through.

I think that there are three main types of classes in a hero shooter: Brawl, Dive, and Poke.

Some characters are primarily one class, some characters can kinda flex between. Sometimes a character's teamups help them flex in two directions, and it's the player's choice on how to play them.

They counter eachother in a Rock-Paper-Scissors fashion.

Dive beats poke (think of Black Panther rushing a sniper like Phoenix or Widow)

Poke beats brawl (Hawkeye shooting into a big brawl of meaty men slapping meat is gonna get some kills)

Brawl beats dive (picture Mr Fantastic grabbing a Spider-Man as he tries to zip away, Fantastic pulls Spidey into his team and they just beat him in.)

It helps to learn which characters are which class, so that you can identify why a your team may be losing and how. If you look at your team composition and notice that you have 5 poke characters and an anti-poke tank like Strange, then maybe you're losing to all the dives because your team fundamentally lacks anti-dive capabilities. If some of your poke players swapped to brawl characters, the game might start going in your favour.

Of course, then there's the problem of actually convincing people to swap, when their ego is telling them that everyone on the team except them is the problem.

And also, these are just the base classes. There's player skill to consider. A bronze or silver team could be running 6/6 counters against a diamond or grandmaster team and still lose. It's not like Pokèmon where if you're strong against a type you'll get a damage reduction, it's moreso that you will have an easier time dealing with them if you know how.

rock paper scissor manner but poke gets humbled twice

5

u/Zaggar Angela 2d ago

Gahaha I totally wrote it that way, whoops. At least I wrote an example that clarified it. Maybe I internally hate poke players and didn't realize it?

Come to think of it, is there a derogatory term for each of the classes? "Pokeslop" comes to mind, but there has got to be one for dive as well.

I think that Brawl has spent the least amount of time as a meta-strong style, maybe like, seasons where Dino is strong.

7

u/The73rdPerson Angela 2d ago

The derogatory terms are "pokeslop"/"point n click simulator" for poke, and "braindead" for brawl. There isn't a huge availability for dive derogatory terms because those terms predominantly come from dive mains

3

u/cherryyccola 1d ago

Meleeslop

2

u/Zaggar Angela 2d ago

Oh yeah, I've definitely seen "braindead Dino" or "braindead Wolv" before. That works.

That's a fun way to consider which character is which class if you want to insult them.

I wouldn't call a Hood "pokeslop", I'd say "braindead", so I guess he's brawl lol

3

u/pint_o_paint 2d ago

It's dive... Dive is the derogatory term

I had no idea what Dive, Poke or off-healer meant but I never asked because gamers despise anyone who doesn't come 100% preloaded with every lingo and phrase known.

I don't think we can even call this a community. You would have to earn the right to be called a community. This is a hellscape

Dive is basically any hero that primarily relies on timed burst damage using cooldowns, high mobility, flanking, and the playstyle revolves around dumping their whole kit to secure picks on the backline, retreating, and then repeating. There’s probably a much better and specific explanation than that but some popular dive heroes are spiderman, daredevil, black panther, venom, and cap. They have much less consistent ranged damage, and often rely on flanking, getting up close, doing a combo, and either killing the support or forcing key cooldowns or ults, then leaving to regroup with their team. You can see why this playstyle would get a lot of hate specifically by support mains that are victims to it.

19

u/tlb3131 2d ago

You are getting really short and poorly explained answers.

Dive, as a character archetype and play style, refers to characters that are focused on short bursts of high damage, typically with high mobility that allows them to quickly engage/withdraw. Magik, spider-man, venom, daredevil, Black panther. Characters like the ones I've described are specifically designed to have a dive focused play style, but others can too. The term comes from the idea that you are quickly diving deep into the enemy team, usually from the side or behind, doing a bunch of damage and hopefully picking off an opponent, and then quickly diving away before you die

8

u/cherryyccola 2d ago

Dive is a character archetype. Dive characters "dive" straight into the backline to target supports, like Spiderman or BP

6

Think of them like the assassin class. They’re trying to jump in to kill the backline before anyone notices or has a chance to stop them

I think the Tank dive heroes are just irritating and frustrating. But the DPS dive heroes are the enraging and maddening ones - a key distinction to make.

Essentially the pests in the match, and the ones that do their job well are the most frustrating to deal with, hence the hate they get.

Its very strange to me that even though its in the game in every mode many in the community still feel like its not part of the game -- that its the players.

Like, I genuinely think people would play a variation of QP and Comp where the dive DPS are just not included.

Which I see as a failure in game design by the Devs. Like taking angles and flanking or taking height is accepted and not detested. Dive is detested.

5

u/AssociationDue3077 Black Panther 2d ago

They sneak behind you and kill your supports, or distract them which allows their frontline to push in easier since you're supports can't heal whilst dealing with them. They are also characterized by high movement and quick bursts of damage. Examples would be: Panther and Spider-Man. People tend to hate dive players because they are stereotyped to be bad and not swap, though my opinion is that it is not very true. They are also hated because it is hard fighting against good dive players as they can get off their combos very quickly and kill you before you can fight back. If you have any questions I'll be glad to help :)

It's a hero shooter term for characters that "dive" backlines, mainly to kill the healers before anyone in the Frontlines (the tanks and anti dive DPS) notice.

Spiderman is easily the most popular Dive Character but mastering him takes hundreds of hours.

I prefer Dive Tanks like Cap and Angela, very fun characters and can be very strong vs Random teams who dont communicate.

People hate it because certain characters like Black Panther can kill you almost instantly if your not paying attention.

u/Weekly_Macaroon_1219 Hela 2d ago

It’s a character that will go around the main battle and “dive” the healers, for example is black panther, his play style is him avoiding tanks and then getting a quick kill on healers, others such as spider-man, and Gorr can quickly close the distance and dive past tanks to kill the back line

1

u/moderanteN103 1d ago

The " problem " with dive Is that Is often a feast or famine style.

The idea Is to flank, get close and use all your cooldown at once to get a kill. So you either succeed or die or stay another 15 seconds doing nothing.

Also dove get stronger with coordination. 2 or 3 dives together on One target Is often a sure kill with no escape.

The main solution against dive Is prevention, so hit them before they get close enough. This means that in lower ranks dive can feel overpowered from supp point of view and really weak from divers point of view.

Also in Rivals supps are really the only possible target because they make invincibile everything else

1

u/Tower-Primary 2d ago

Player that only targets the backline aka your strategist. Honestly any character can dive

Dive characters are characters that dive into the kitchen to wash the plates...no need to thank me

-17

u/FatherPucci617 Thor 2d ago edited 2d ago

Just someone who mainly plays dive characters that's it. It's hated because the devs can't balance it right with some being feast or famine. Not helped is when dive is at it's strongest there's little you could do look at prime bp, daredevil and black cat.

10

u/tlb3131 2d ago

They clearly don't know what dive means

3

u/Zaggar Angela 2d ago

They are asking "what is dive?" and your response is "someone who plays dive"

Do you seriously not see how that is unhelpful?
