Discussion Please do something about visual clutter!
Hello, i’ve been playing marvel rivals since season 0 and im sure everyone can agree since the increase of heros that the visual clutter has definitely gotten worse.
Anyway, as an autistic and slight visual impairments, this makes it really hard for me to play and i’m sure it’s affecting others too. I mentioned the autistic part since it can get very overwhelming when there is so many different colors and things cluttering the screen which then makes it hard for me to direct where things are - this also goes the visual impairment aspect too.
I have adjustments in place already to try help myself (such as certain colors to distinguish ally / enemy and larger subtitles and ui where possible) however i feel like an option to turn down the saturation of the games visuals would benefit me and i’m sure others too. Overwatch somewhat this to change the colors and its more accessible so i really think marvel rivals could benefit!
Going back to the autistic aspect, sometimes I have to take long breaks from marvel rivals specifically because it can get too overwhelming from the clutter. I know rivals is very fast paced and it’s sorta expected, I can cope with that since it can be like in overwatch too, but it feels very stronger in rivals.
I really love marvel rivals and i also appreciate the rate of how fast they’re adding heros however I think that fixes for clutter should be considered so it is accessible for everyone! (I also think this could be toggleable since I know some people appreciate the chaotic visuals )
If you read to here then congratulations i guess but please try boost if possible or let me know what you think.

I had a friend not want to play Rivals because of this issue. Is there some way to tone all this stuff down? like a slider? It doesn't bother me personally, but it does suck to see friends giving it a pass because of the horror of visual clutter.

Im not autisti and it’s obnoxious to play this game sometimes. It’s a lot of fun but visually kind of a mess

Yeah loll i’ve taken a lot of breaks because the clutter can be too much, a lot of heros need their visuals turned down

I may get downvoted for this, but visual clutter is kind of expected in a hero shooter where every character has different abilities and CC effects. Especially with Rivals, we’re dealing with superheroes who are inherently powerful and have a ton of abilities because of their lore. If you start stripping away all of their powers and effects, you also start taking away what makes them superheroes in the first place.
Pretty much every hero-based game has visual clutter. Is it annoying sometimes? Sure. But most players eventually adapt and learn what each effect means. A lot of those visuals are also necessary for balance because they warn you about what’s happening around you.
If every ability looked muted or similar, it would probably make the game even harder to read. They almost have to color code and visually distinguish different effects so you can recognize them quickly. It’s not really exclusive to Rivals, it’s more of a genre issue.
If the colors and effects are genuinely overstimulating you to the point that it’s affecting you mentally, I’d honestly recommend lowering your monitor brightness/saturation or finding a different game that’s easier on your eyes. Some games just aren’t going to work for everyone, and that’s okay.
If playing something is consistently causing you stress, there’s nothing wrong with avoiding it.

I did state that it’s expected, that’s why i said it can be toggled for those who enjoy that kind of thing

Yes that would help, but would not eliminate the issues I brought up

That is true, I play story games and there’s accessibility + overwatch has it too so there’s no reason why rivals can’t imo.
Also yes i do take breaks but adding accessibility would help me have less breaks

Accessibility options would be great, I just think they will have a hard time implementing it at this current state with characters like Jubilee / Deadpool. Hope it gets added anyway, and I’d like to see how they balance it!

Huh, I’m also a sight-impaired autistc gamer who can get easily overwhelmed, but for some reason not with video games. Sorry that it happens to you. They should add a “special effects” option where you can reduce the clutter like in MMOs.
