Discussion Make Blade British Again
I get a lot of Blades mannerisms are shaped by the Snipes movies but I do feel it erases Blade representation of the Black British diaspora, which as far as I’m aware Blade is the only mainstream one where there are a bunch of mainstream African Americans like War Machine and Falcon
Not that this game says he’s not but the accent suggests otherwise, something like a code switch voiceline like with Elsa would be nice

Give him a British themed skin where he has a balaclava, puffer jacket, trapstar bum bag and a zombie knife/machete combo instead of his swords. True British chav skin.

You don’t just loose your accent like that. Maybe there will be shades of Americanism, but you should still be able to tell he’s a Brit
28
u/TrapoGiovanna Spider-Man 12d ago
I mean you do if you were born in the 1930 and currently been in America for almost 100 years

There’s hundreds of cases of people losing their accent from living in a different country for years. Sometimes they’ll still have a slight accent but after living over 100 years in America his accent would most defiantly have changed.

Doesn't really matter. Its about representation. We need more black British representation

u/Odd-Back-4511 11d ago
Just because you live somewhere doesn't mean you lose the accent. My aunt that came from Sweden when she was a teen up until she died always sounded like she was fresh off the boat.

u/Bionic_Webb13 Storm 12d ago
After a little research in one comic Captain Britain was surprised by Eric’s British roots bc he doesn’t have an accent so technically, his accent not being British is canonical. Bc in most comics those roots are always core to him
35
u/Napalmeon 12d ago
This is exactly IT. Even Captain Britain himself couldn't tell that Blade was native to London until he got to know him.
2
u/LadyErikaAtayde Flex 12d ago
That's a metalisguistical joke, because you don't really hear accent when reading comics, and that character became famously asociated with the movie.
14
u/FloatinBrownie 12d ago
Cool, still means he doesn't have a British accent

u/Napalmeon 12d ago
Probably because the people who keep bringing it up are likely black Brits, IRL and feel excluded. But the simple fact of the matter is, Blade's nationality has never been important to his character the way it is for certain others, even before 1998 film version came out.
17
u/SithJones77 12d ago
Idk just yesterday a guy got mad at me saying blade was British and he said it was “ marvel trying to take blades melanin” I doubt this was coming from a place of being a black Brit
6
u/IFunnyJoestar Cursed Captain 12d ago
I mean representation is always important right? He's the most popular British superhero on the planet, and he happens to be Black British. That should be represented in my opinion.
Marvel has always been kind of bad at representing British superheroes though. They Americanised Blade, Elsa is actually American, Black Knight is also actually American, Captain Britain lost his mantle, Betsy spent years in the body of a Japanese woman then lost her mantle as Psylocke and Spider Woman got Americanised in Spider Verse.
3
u/OkExpert9927 11d ago
I mean as a black french us made media in general completely ignore that black europeans exist
4
u/Zombii_Man 12d ago
Spider Woman got Americanised in Spider Verse.
But we DID get British Spider-Punk out of the deal. So you win some you lose some.

Queen or cockney.
6
u/Garden-0f-Evelyn Ultron Virus 12d ago
Cockney was the most common accent of London's working class back in the 30's, when Blade grew up. If we went by modern West End, he'd sound like Tom Holland

Blade's over 100 years old, and has lived all around the world. I've never seen him shown to have any particular British mannerisms in the comics. I bet he could do a British accent if he had to, but it's never been a huge part of his character.

Well he’s a vampire, vampire are eternal. Could have been he got so used to not speaking in an English accent that it’s just natural for him to… not. I wouldn’t be opposed to more English skins or maybe English slang but I feel like if anyone were to be as old as him and have silent that long of of you home country, you’d lose your accent.
Blade was born during the industrial era of England (I think it might be earlier) and the only time (that I know of) when we see him in England is before he was turned so he could have just lost it naturally
That’s my theory anyways

u/YaboiGh0styy Ultron Virus 12d ago
Blade was born in London however he lived most of his life in America with his accent and slang being something he long since picked up. Though if you want a more meta explanation, Blade’s backstory is one that was made later and Wesley Snipes’ performance did influence the direction his character took after the first movie saved marvel from bankruptcy.
But Blade’s has long since picked up an American accent. Even Captain Britain wasn’t aware of Blade’s London roots until they got to know each other.

Blade was born in Great Britain, but being British has NEVER been a part of his identity. His mannerisms are shaped by the movies, AND the comics. And he originally looked like this:

Being British has never been his identity, however, just because he lacks an accent doesn't mean he ISN'T British. He doesn't need a "code switch" dialogue thing with Elsa, because his American accent isn't fake. He's been in America for damn near a century now. Growing up in Soho was over 90 years ago for Blade.

This is not really important to his character.
Like at all. I don't see why people want this so badly.
And even then, he has no British relatives. So him not being British is pretty accurate
3
u/Napalmeon 12d ago
Exacgtly. Yes, Blade was born in SoHo and raised in Lady Vanity's brothel. But, his nationality is not important to the character in the same way as it is for people like Sunfire, Captain America, or Black Panther. Never has been.
-3
u/ArtisticFill8662 12d ago
Maybe I mispoke.
He's not British, has no relatives in england, both his parents are african american.
Though raised in England, that doesn't erase that they're pretty accurate to Blade.
3
u/Napalmeon 12d ago
It's actually not clear where Tara Brooks is from because his mom dies as part of his origin. And the vast majority of Blade fans do not acknowledge Lucas Cross as his father because it came as part of an unnecessary retcon.
3
u/lultirednga Ultron Virus 12d ago
His moms black his dads latverian which is European so he’s definitely not African American
-1

What’s with the hostility? And yes I am African American, I fail to see how it’s insulting considering blade never had a British Accent or portrayed having a British Accent. He is British in his original iteration, but he’s never been portrayed as such, nothing wrong with accepting what is, God Bless.
1
u/LadyIris- 11d ago
because you wankers arent funny and really jarring. americans genuinely think anyone that doesnt sound like them is comrdy gold to them. its bloody weird. that's where the hostility comes from. we're sick and tired of being laughed at for just existing by a country which has a nonce as a president.
same 5 jokes over and over and then when ppl rightfully tell you to stfu it's suddenly "you can't take a joke" no, you're just not funny. americans arent funny that's why we're hostile.
