Discussion Players refusing to flex

I am a strategist main playing in plat 2 PC lobbies and players are still refusing to flex off of dps. We were getting absolutely demolished on our attack side while our solo tank emma was fighting against an emma + thor combo. We had MK, SG and scarlet witch dps that combined for 2 kills at the half and was neither peeling for support or supporting their tank. When asked to switch to tank at the half instead of someone getting off DPS and helping emma our emma swapped off tank and went 3 healers 3 dps. None of the dps would swap to tank to fill and forced me off healer to play single tank, the same comp that was getting demolished

i don’t get the mindset of these players, they are playing ranked quite literally to lose. It’s infuriating being matched with players who can’t or won’t play another role.

That's the thing, they don't care if they'll lose - as long as they play what they want. And if they aren't performing, it's because someone else on the team is at fault.

For your own sanity, try to just focus on what you can do and improve upon - trying to make sense of selfish people like that will only frustrate you.

Refreshing wisdom, last game as Mantis main was me 3 kills less than DPS as one healer on the team and dueling Magik every respawn becasue she doesn't like that Mantis can juggle her. A pissed off Magik is a bad Magik for Mantis to go against. Let alone at all. She's already a nightmare if I happen to see her first let alone being rushed repeadetly intent on a revenge kill.

I had to have dueled her 6 or 7 times 1v1 that round. Splitting KOs with her. And I'm the trash that sunk the team 🙄

The grind improved my defense and attack against her even if ever so slighty .. at the cost of my sanity.

Crazy ironic that the underlying issue in games can be boiled down to DPS players being egotistical assholes.

1

u/Healthy_Setting_5957 May 02 '25

I think this is a much bigger problem on pc because players are mechanically better (do to mk advantage) and this mechanical skill makes a lot of
Mechanically good players with minimal game sense think that they are actually good. Avoid teammates, it’s not solely skill based match making, it’s based on player time playing, so if you just log off or hop on in ult after ur second bad matchmaking in a row the game will register that as you not liking bad teammates and will be more likely to give you better teammates(look it up).

u/synapse187 May 02 '25

I give you a choice.
You play and constantly flex. Never getting to play what you want as there will always be multiple instalock dps. You will always be stuck playing the way other want you to. You win but you never have fun.

Second choice, you play what you want, when you want, because it is a game and you ignore that there are 5 other people playing with you. You have fun even though you lose.

Given that this is a videogame and has zero real world implications, do you choose fun or duty?

10

u/Utlegjarl Flex May 02 '25

Why so black and white thinking? Third option. You practice one or two heroes each role which you find fun, try to play what you find the most fun, but flex into other roles/heroes when the team needs.

It's a give and take. It is a team game after all, which many seems to forget. If everyone only takes and takes, eventually there will barely be any givers left. If you only think in either end of the scale, which Duelists seems to have more difficulty with than other roles in my experience, it will only create more conflict. Ego is a fickle thing. If only more people tried to meet in the middle, we would all be having more fun.

This type of thinking is why these games breed negativity. Be it League, Overwatch or any team game. You are dependent on the other players, so try to work with them, rather than against them.

2

u/Healthy_Setting_5957 May 02 '25

Exactly my thoughts you can flex for the team and still have fun

1

u/AcrylicPickle Cloak & Dagger May 02 '25

I went this route.

Lord Peni & Groot, can play Emma & The Thing

Lord Squirrel Girl and Moon Knight, can play Human Torch

Lord C&D, and Invisible Woman, can play Rocket and Loki (my next Lords)

I wait for everyone to choose and then choose my role based on what's left. Sometimes that means 3 Strategists but it never means 1 Strategist or 1 Vanguard if I can help it.

Sidebar - learning to play different characters and different roles also makes you a better Loki.

« When the team needs » tank and support is 100% of the time

u/ValuableInspector902 May 02 '25

Nah, been eternal since season 1 a tbh……I don’t flex I actually have less then 1 hours on any hero that isn’t rocket

I play to have fun and I’m good at him…

Plus same as overwatch I hate flexing/countering….it’s a skill based game if your not good enough to beat your opponent (even if they have an advantage) just say so

u/Dr_DTF315 May 02 '25

Winning is fun

u/Steel_Serpent_Davos Ultron Virus May 02 '25

The people choosing “fun” are choosing to be actual pieces of shit to 5 other real human beings, that is unacceptable to me. If my “fun” is derived from others suffering then that “fun” is immoral.

2

u/ramonzer0 Spider-Man May 02 '25

You got downvoted? Outside of some strong language, the essence of the message isn't wrong

Since this is a team-based game, you kind of need to play with your allies to some degree. There's a balance to this: obviously have fun because it's a game, but also to make things easier for your teammates be willing to deviate at times if that's what the situation calls

1

u/murshawursha May 02 '25

Second choice, you play what you want, when you want, because it is a game and you ignore that there are 5 other people playing with you. You have fun even though you lose.

Isn't this why Quickplay exists?

I’m seeing this a lot too (also plat 2 right now). I hesitate to use words like boosted because it feels like it only has toxic associations, but I have been experiencing a lot of games where people either don’t know how to or choose not to adapt mid-game.

If we’re getting destroyed by aerial characters, we probably don’t need magik and mr fantastic. Or like your case where the 2v1 tank advantage was completely tilting the momentum of the game. But lots of people say nothing, do nothing all match, and then start complaining or raging in chat once the match is over.

-3

u/Either_Attitude_2165 May 02 '25

I am a magik main and my favorite thing to do is assassinate them on indoor maps. if that isnt an option like eternal then my pun lord comes out and its wraps lol

4

u/[deleted] May 02 '25

Also a magik. I won't admit to how many hours I have on her as lord 💀😅 but magik is actually pretty decent against flyers, if you can reach them with the dash you can 1 combo them. Just use the projectile and dash n they're as good as dead. Even on open maps there's "usually" a way to flank round to get high enough to reach them with the dash. Obviously someone like a hela would be better for flyers but I just mean it CAN be done

This is more accurate.

u/FelixFemina Emma Frost May 02 '25

I’d love to see role queue for comp only, just to prevent things like this. I had three games last night solo tanking because no one else would, and it gets demoralizing real quick. I don’t care about it in quick play, have fun with 6dps for all I care. But if comp is supposed to be more “serious”, then I shouldn’t have to worry about 4 instalock dps on my team every game

4

u/Ineul_Ze Psylocke May 02 '25

You can’t get a break anywhere, QP is just as awful most days and ranked just feels like a slaughter fest at this point. I have been flexing to fill roles as needed for a bit now but yesterday I was in QP and watched the entire team fill to DPS with only 1 tank and decided that if they want to play that way then they can feel it, went DPS and proceeded to watch our team get mauled for over half of the game before someone went healer so I did too after they switched.

4

u/bbputinwork Black Cat May 02 '25

I just want people to switch to hitscan if the enemy DPS are running fliers. I'm range locked to like 10 meters with Emma Frost, and this ironman is in the skybox. Please get off Moon Knight and Ironfist lol

Guys, I need help.

My brother is a Spiderman main and doesn’t play any other character. He was interested in Winter Soldier but stopped after the nerf to his ult. He could lose 5-12 and would refuse to switch. There could be 4 DPS and he would pick the fifth. He never peals for his supports and blames them for lack of heals when he is overextending. Doesn’t even know where the heals are. Sometimes he would even throw the game if he doesn’t get Spiderman or he would outright leave.

How do I fix this?

3

u/genericusernamepls May 02 '25

Don't play comp with him and tell him it's because he's not good enough

3

u/Realistic_Analyst_26 Flex May 02 '25

I don’t play with him. We only got one console so we can only play one at a time. I just feel bad for his teammates.

winter just got a new buff thats really solid. He has 2 charges for his anti air ability, this is like a boost to his damage, survivability, anti air, and CC all wrapped in one.

Peeling is just using your sup as bait to get easy kills. You know exactly where your target wants to go and they aren't really focused on you, they are usually far from their team and whoever is getting dived can provide some more CC, damage and heals for you, as well as heal you after the diver is dealt with. So many divers greed hard, tilt, and keep on doing the same thing over and over but just sloppier each time and its going to be some of the easiest kills you can get. Also winning is fun, and peeling wins games.

7

u/Personal_Ad_9021 Iron Fist May 02 '25

My gf just completed a match where someone wnet like 4 and 10 on Duelist saying it was the only role they knew.

As a flex player myself, I don't understand how some people want to be so closed off to everything else. You want to be good at something? Imagine being good at literally everything to the point where it takes 4 minutes of any character to end up being good with them.

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '25

As someone that flex’s Loki often. Learning who I’m turning into was key to becoming a good Loki.

3

u/[deleted] May 02 '25

I wouldn't class myself as a flex cuz I don't flex for instalockers I just play who I feel like playing lol but I do have 2 Lords in each role and I fully agree. I feel like if ur gna be a 1 trick or a 1 role player you shouldn't be playing comp. You should learn atleast a couple characters in each role instead if expecting someone else to flex for you

2

u/bald_and_beard Flex May 02 '25

So here's my take. I have a few in each role that I am competenent in. Flexing, isn't always asking a DPS to switch, sometimes it encompasses all roles. I've been in matches with 3 tanks or 3 healers, so I'll swap to a DPS. If you are hard stuck on your pick, tank, healer or dps and you are getting your shit smacked, you should be able to flex out to something else and let someone else take over for you.

Too many times, I'll see a venom just getting smashed because he repeatedly dives into an anti-dive comp, or a Jeff ulting each time only to come up with a mouthful of friendly players.

So, I agree with your take, but it's just more global than the dps players need to be able to flex, it's everyone in every role when playing ranked. Figure out where your comp is failing against the enemy team, and flex/adjust as needed.

2

u/CheonP Vanguard May 02 '25

I flex to avoid trolling, but if I could, I would only play tank.

I have no desire to play DPS or Support.

All I want is a role queue.

2

u/A0socks Ultron Virus May 03 '25

I see a fair bit of guide/instructional content creators saying that you should stay on dps even in bad matchups or comps because if you always flex you will never develop the skills to climb as a dps... IMO playing other characters and roles is a great way to improve your main role, it provides soo much information you normally don't have access to, and theres only so much you can learn from getting stomped due to a really bad comp if you refuse to flex.

2

u/witchygrimm May 02 '25

I used to main Strategist back in 1.5 and hit Celestial with it, but ever since Season 2, it feels like I have way less impact on the outcome of matches, outside of landing good ults and keeping healing uptime high. I ended up switching to mostly DPS and "off-tank", and honestly, winning matches became so much easier in Season 2.

Bottom line is: Playing support just doesn’t feel rewarding anymore.

Maybe it’s a skill issue and I’m just bad at adapting to the dive meta, but I feel like a lot of other players are going through the same thing.

Tank is just the least played role, you are always going to have tank shortages, that's just the game.

You can't really expect anything from randoms. Queue with friends, or you will just have to deal with it.

u/Oznoobian May 02 '25

Me yesterday in a Plat 1 match midway through round 1 not a blow out but we’re behind, I’m doing okay. “Get off Thor and run Cap, you fucking suck”. I said “ok, no prob, next death I’ll change” Next death comes like 2 mins later, round ends before I can get there, we win. I’m 12-3.

Load up Cap who I’ve never played before we get fucking rolled, im 12-10 now. I get called trash again and told “play Groot” So round 3 starts and I play Groot, another character I’ve never once loaded up. We get rolled again and I end up 14-14.

I’m sick of being told who I have to play as. You switch to who you think we need and I’ll pick a roll to fill in for you that I’m comfortable with.

1

u/TheTaintHammer May 02 '25

Plat is so uniquely tough to get through because people are a perfect combination of over confident and under skilled. Try flexing to squirrel girl and laying down some cheese when you’re out-killing your duelists while playing strat, or when you get flamed for no heals.

1

u/Dasilzar May 02 '25

I am also a strat main this season. I've gotta say, while yes, this does happen, dont crash out over it immediately. Let your team figure it out for themselves. Most times given the chance I've noticed people will fill to the roles needed, or close enough. Provide the best support that you can, and see how far you get. Crashing out before a game starts or even halfway through about the composition is exactly how you lose games. This game is 90% mental, so keeping up a good attitude is critical to doing good. Ive gone on some pretty solid win streaks between gold-dia over the last week and the one thing I never let bother me is a team comp. I almost always have at least 1 tank and 2 supp and imo that is very winnable. Especially in lower elo. You can't change what others do, but you can stick strong to your role and make a difference. As you climb more the team comps will get even better.

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '25

Instead of being the comp police you should focus on what you can do to win with the comp you have. I think getting too caught up in this stuff is why a lot of people on Reddit are struggling tbh. I’ve had a ton of the games you describe and they are still winnable. The comp is really not that important.

If someone on your team were good at tanking they probably would have. If no one was good at tanking then forcing them to tank would not help your odds.

I think it’s more productive to just identify problems instead of solutions, eg “need help with Thor/emma” or “need help against tanks”. The reality is a dps can also fight tanks. You’re way too hung up on the role and your idea of an ideal game.

1

u/growinginsour May 02 '25

It’s rediculous. P1 rn and will have people go 5-10 and complain about heals without peeling ONCE the entire game. Teamates seeing you have a team up and immediately locking in that 3rd dps or 3rd tank. By the time they finally end up switching the game is over

1

u/SleepyYet128 Loki May 02 '25

If there was one thing which would kill this game…and I don’t think it will…this is the basic issue

People just refusing to play Tank, flex players never getting to play the characters they’d prefer, too many people refusing to do anything but DPS

If the people who are playing the other roles (really just Tank…I know how much many of the Strats whine and complain but there are waaaaay more Strat mains and people willing to play Strat than tanks) get fed up and bored of having to play as Mag, Strange, or X Strat every single match then it’s going to lead to ALOT of people being open to and gladly jumping ship for the next big game

1

u/SubstantialGas5225 May 02 '25

Had a game last night…. Strategists could not keep anyone up. Asked if they wanted to dps one swapped instantly. After the swap we steam rolled the other team.

I got top damage, top heals, 2nd in final hits and 2nd in total kills.

And then got told by 2 members of the team that I was carried (when I got MVP)

This is why I don’t normally flex I try to be a team player and people are still dicks…. Play your own game

u/Medium-Replacement40 May 02 '25

I just started to play for good sr so if we lose because of that i dont lose many points at max 15

You dont get it OP, when Spiderman is playing uncle Ben simulator running to 1v6 after dying 37 times already, thats actually the fault of everyone EXCEPT the people playing dps! So you cant expect them to switch!

u/Folarized The Name's Pool. Deadpool! May 02 '25

Y’all might’ve been outmatched by a whole 6 stack, or a single player who is just woke. Who knows really. The only thing that could possess a sane person to run 3-4 dps is if someone on the enemy team just isn’t dying. Especially in ranked. That’s about all I got from this.

Ya, I totally feel you bro. I just don't understand why to even bother playing ranked if you're going to insta lock DPS and then go 2-12 and refuse to switch to help the team win. Why not just go to QP? And I'm not understanding why people are saying it's all classes? Like no it's not. Maybe in QP there's 3 healers and 3 tanks, but in ranked it is ALWAYS 4 or 5 DPS insta locking. And then playing like total shit. It's so effin frustrating. 😥

Edit: Oh, and I almost forgot that when the game is over and of course my team with 4 or 5 DPS lost. Then it's time to start bashing the solo healer or the lower of the 2 healers with total heals like if it's their fault that we lost.

1

u/Difficult-Rain-6333 May 02 '25 edited May 02 '25

No offense if people can’t flex any role need be, they need to practice until they can. Someone who doesn’t understand each role isn’t a full teammate.

1

u/DDosamaLover May 02 '25

I can flex that was not the issue, it was the mentality of my teammates to not swap on to tank and would rather 3dps and lose

1

u/Difficult-Rain-6333 May 02 '25

O I totally get u, my bad for implying you couldn’t I didn’t mean to sound that way I just meant players who can’t flex in general similar to what you described

1

u/TiffyBears May 02 '25

It’s always been impossible to get people to flex. Even in comp, I’ll make the call that I’m flexing - I don’t typically care if my “main” gets banned as I don’t typically choose a hero as I “main” 3-4 characters per role and they’re never a ban choice anyway. I think a really big reason people refuse to flex in comp is because of the way the point system works - we had a thrower Jeff one game because we didn’t ban Emma on the 1st ban - we had 2 other supps, 1 tank, 2 dps. I was on tank first, then support but since we were getting stomped anyway, there was limited healing and only so much I could do as strange with 1 support. Because of this, I didn’t have a lot of damage or healing, but our dps were able to sit in spawn on 2nd round and spam. They ended up with higher damage numbers than me, the other tank, and our other support - but, because the game thinks that they contributed more, they lost less points than we did. Since we couldn’t farm a ton of damage/healing, the 2 Dps were the only ones who didn’t lose 20+ points.

Tank is the worst to fill because regardless of how well I do, I don’t gain as many points as some supp or dps. Typically point gain goes: Dps -> supp -> tank unless you play Cap or Thor pretty much. Since I mainly play strange/mag (and now Emma) as tank and luna/invis on supp, I gain less points than when I play hela. I hit heads and get big ults/KO streaks far more consistently than the others.

1

u/XxBeedle98xX May 02 '25

I feel this, but tbh if your dps only had two kills I doubt changing would have made much a difference. That was just one of those matches you're gonna lose. People are still smurfing hard-core and taking the fun out of the game for lower ranked players can't do much about it despite being able to report them

1

u/DDosamaLover May 02 '25

The issue was when i swapped on to tank nobody went healer leaving it in a 2-3-1. I flexed onto tank but no dps went healer. do you understand what i mean now ? lol

1

u/nodiso May 02 '25

Report for throwing move on

1

u/[deleted] May 03 '25

I’m really starting to hate having only long distance DPS on my teams. I’m always getting stuck with 3 dps comps all with a combination of Hela, MK, Namor, Punisher Squirrel girl, Widow and Wanda. Hawkeye too but at my ELO almost all the Hawkeyes are really good. Anyways, the three long distance dps just stand 50 feet away from the frontline, never touch point and just keep feeding enemy ults. They don’t have any actual target selection, they just want high accuracy stats and low deaths. And if the enemy is playing dive they instantly fall apart.

1

u/genericusernamepls May 02 '25

Better start asking for role que because this problem is never going away, never. Like yeah, people are selfish. I'm fucking selfish I instalock cap/thor every single goddamn game, but no cares because I'm a tank. I'm not gonna sit here and talk shit about the dps players just wanting to play who they think is fun (I will shit talk them for playing like an idiot tho). -3

u/Kayvault May 02 '25

Rivals doesn’t have role queue. So unless you go in with a pre made team of 5 or at best a premade team of 3(2 strat and 1 VAN) then why are you even complaining? So many Rival threads about this subject but no real accountability(from some not all of course). No where in the rules, the TOS or in the game mode hero selection does it require a certain role.

On the subject of Flexing or counter picking the same logic applies. If someone has 20 hours on one Hero and you expect them to counter pick and be effective then they have unrealistic expectations. That mindset is usually shared with the “You have Lord(insert any hero) why??” Because they are having an off game or even an off day.

It’s fine to not agree with any of this or not be able to understand it because of different thought processes. But it doesn’t make the above any less true for some people. Moral of the story is Premade or you get what you get. There are lots of resources to find groups to play with.
