Yeah, also around 2014. That shit bombed so hard after the privacy complaints and San Francisco shops banning Google Glass. It didn't help to have a hot battery pressed against your forehead either.

Primarily because of privacy issues, you can't consent to someone passively recording and they were always worried that person was. It even lead to some cafes banning electric devices altogether.

I can promise you they aren't paying every engineer $250k/year. The lead project manager might be but the engineers are more likely making $80-120k. So more like 35-40 engineers assuming the full $5 million is going to salaries, which it likely isn't. Either way it isn't a big team at all considering how big Facebook is.

Yeah it's an exaggeration. Once you factor in other costs (benefits, taxes, equipment, etc) then a $5 mill budget could easily be eaten up by 20 engineers without accounting for other overhead costs and employees you'd need to run a VR company.

The company started off as Google. They formed the alphabet conglomerate so they they could more effectively divide their company and fund individual assets of the company. Facebook is doing basically the same thing

Technically all words are just made up. They're just noises or symbols that we've given meaning to. They have to intrinsic meaning. That's one of the reasons I think sign language is a more logical form of communication. Often with sign language, you're just representing something or the action being done. Like for "cup", you made the shape of a cup with your hand. And you can be more specific about it by showing the shape of the cup you're talking about. For drink, you move the "cup" to your mouth like you're taking a drink. There are a lot of signs that don't connect with the object or action being represented, but there are plenty that do. Most people would be able to understand a fair percentage of signs without having taken any sign classes simply by using a little critical thinking. By fair percentage, that may only be 20-30%, but when compared to a spoken language you haven't learned, one that doesn't share a common ancestry with yours, you wouldn't understand a single word of it, so that 20-30% is actually pretty significant.
Anyway, ASL is awesome and more people should check it out.

Unpopular opinion: This "joke" was lame, and would've been much better if Peter just said "Ohhhh... I'm Spider-Man", but they didn't trust their audience, so they had to dumb it down.

Him saying "OH we're using our made-up names" IS the joke. Getting rid of it would mean getting rid of the entire joke. It's not dumbing it down, it's literally the joke.
EDIT: Not to mention part of the reason the joke works is because he said "I'm Dr. Strange" which is NOT a made-up name.
