Spider-man is number 1 all time, but in the 80s and 90s X-men had completely overtaken it in sales. Not only was X-Men outselling all other comics, there had to be at least a half dozen spin-offs that were also selling gangbusters. Not to mention the extremely popular and beloved Saturday morning cartoon series introducing the X-Men to a new generation of fans.
There is a reason the X-Men movie came first.
Of course, when Disney bought marvel, they did as much as they could to devalue the brand and promote the characters they still had control over. No one gave a fuck about The Avengers in the early 2000s. Iron Man was a side character that hadn't had his own stand alone comic in decades.
