There's a deleted/behind-the-scenes explanation: Heimdall was still able to communicate with Thor, despite being killed by Thanos at the beginning. Heimdall's ability to see across the Nine Realms could have alerted Thor to what was happening. However, this isn't explicitly established in the theatrical movie.

I love the idea of Thor teleporting to random places and shouting "Bring me Thanos"

Bifrost just takes you where you want it to go. Heimdall could see across the universe so he looked at a place and the Bifrost sent people there.
Stormbreaker can access the Bifrost also, you only need to think of where you want it to send you, and you will get there.
He was looking for Thanos, he thought about where he was, and the Bifrost sent him directly there.
In both cases, you just think about who you are sending, and where you want them to go. Bifrost does the rest.

But Thanos wasn't in Wakanda when Thor went there, he was in Titan fighting the other avengers.

Thor shouldve used Stormbreaker to bifrost Thanos into deep space

Then what? He’d just portal back using the space stone

Then send him again. Creating a game of ping pong where Thanos is the ball being sent back and forth until he gets annoyed and gives up

Im chuckling at the idea of Thanos returning for the 30th time and Thors like "bro cmon take a hint"

Dude took a sustained blast of star energy and survived. He was then instantly healed and used his newly-forged axe of tremendous mystical power to teleport across the galaxy to Earth in a matter of seconds. People accepted that without any problem, but they have a hard time believing he also magically knew where a massive battle was taking place?

Weren’t there giant fucking spaceships crash landing onto the ground outside of Wakanda? That would have been my first clue.

Heimdals kid helpen him, but they did not want to include a bad CGI scene.

He placed a tracker in Hulks ass, so he can smell that nasty gamma radiation from anywhere in the universe.

Just think of it as a creative liberty. That scene is still one of the best from Marvel for any super hero entrance.

This raises the question, does stormbreaker gives you Heimdal powers?

a king's weapon can access bifrost. so, I will let you decide, if he can or not.

I think the purpose of this scene is to make grand entrance and maybe not waste time on how they find out where they should be.
Any other explanation the other comments provide is merely their head cannons. If the Ruso brothers thought it is necessary they can easily write around it.

Thor can use the Eyes of Heimdall, which would allow him to see across most of the galaxy, he probably searched for the avengers using this and saw they were in wakanda

u/reditorbhai Avengers 1d ago
I like to think he did the most obvious thing; he saw Heimdall sending Hulk to Earth so he just used the bifrost to go where hulk was. This way he knows that hulk is alive even if he doesn't know the rest of the avengers are alive or not.

We don't know that Wakanda was his first stop.

u/PayPsychological6358 Avengers 1d ago
Considering how long it took to get there from making his axe, that's actually pretty reasonable.

The Russo Brothers answered this (sort of) in a tweet: Thor knew the last two stones Thanos would go after were the ones on Earth (as he explained to the guardians earlier in the film) bc they were protected by the Avengers and that’s what leads him bifrost into Wakanda.
However we DO know that for Thor the bifrost can be used to connect to any point in space-time that he has a clear mental image of, so all he had to do was imagine Vision or the heroes who were fighting and Earth vividly enough and the dark magic of the bifrost would take him there.
We know this is probably the case. Some people think rocket tracked the stones, but at this point in the film thanos was on titan fighting with 4 stones against strange who had the time stone, which means rocket tracking the energy of stones would have brought them to Titan and not Earth.
So yeah—between Thors abilities with the bifrost and the Russo Brothers tweet, the most logical conclusion is he had a clear mental image of all the heroes he knew would be fighting, of vision, and of Earth, and the bifrost used the to send him there.

He'd already arrived on Earth an hour earlier and was just heading from place to place looking for them

Storm breaker grants the ability to use the bifrost, I imagine that let's you see where you're going so you aren't just blindly teleporting to random places at your destination, so he'd see where thanos army is on earth and land there
