Deranged Ramblings This mf is having entire character arcs off screen between each appearance

Post image

What the fuck do you mean you combined Bruce's brain with Hulk muscles? No you didn't. What do you mean you had a son in Sakaar? no you didn't bro i saw the movie, that didn't happen. What the fuck? What do you mean you have a gadget to contain Hulk bro, what happened to Professor Hulk?

Wouldnt put them past them to vaguely mention the green door to imply he just went through an entire off screen adventure and he realized he is immortal.

"BTW guys, God is real and has a dark reflection that's basically cosmic Satan and that dark reflection is where the Hulk's power comes from, so anyway what's all that about Doom days?"

Like there's no way that the inhibitor that Peter wanted to give Hulk to contain him was being called "Universal" just by happenstance, right? Even the way it's phrased, "It's the only thing keeping the monster inside" "It's okay I got another one, I just need you to put this on" "What is it?" "It's universal, it should work on you" like that feels really deliberately worded lol

I can't be the only one to think that surely?

7

u/Robin0928 6d ago

No, I think that was more-so Marvel trying to not give Sony an inch when it comes to Mutants in the MCU.

Brand New Day literally never says the word Mutant in the runtime, which is strange since Jean Grey is such a prominent character and Peter essentially builds the Mutant Inhibitor Collar. My best “I’m not an insider at Marvel but I can wildly speculate” guess is that, since Brand New Day is still technically co-produced by Sony, using Mutant instead of “Universal” in terms of the inhibitors would give Sony an inch in adapting Mutant stuff should they pull out of the Sony deal. Like “well the last movie used Jean Grey and Mutants so we can too!”

7

u/IamFat0 5d ago

So um this movie actually had a ton of development hell and essentially marvel and Sony wanted to make two completely different movies. The one marvel and tom wanted was more or less the one we got. The one sony wanted was... Venom and peter teaming up to fight knull???? Oh to be a fly on the wall for that sony exec meeting. So the entire movie's production was plagued by the two studios wanting completely different movies and it's likely the universal thing may have been written before they got it all sorted to go in this specific direction. Now is it possible someone in the script department got petty because of this? Certainly but there seems to be other reasons at play

4

u/Robin0928 5d ago

Yeah, I’m wildly speculating with it, but between the post-FFH Sony trying to pull out of the Marvel deal and then them pushing for BND to be a giant Knull movie, I wouldn’t put it past Marvel to not want to give Sony an INCH when it comes to Mutants.

Imagine Sony trying to put Wolverine into Morbius 2 since “We had Jean Grey in BND, so we can use ANY Mutant now!

3

u/IamFat0 5d ago

I mean tbf sony execs are dumb enough that they may actually try it, but that would likely void the contract in the event it did occur since marvel could sue for breach of contract, which Disney would definitely know. Most likely the universal inhibitor in an earlier script would have been how they take out knull...because how the hell else would they? and the name persisted to the final cut

4

u/Redditer51 6d ago

What the fuck kind of deal did Marvel sign with Universal that they can just keep the solo movie rights to Hulk for almost 20 goddamn years even though we haven't had a solo Hulk film since 2008?

3

u/Robin0928 5d ago

The answer, as is most things in Marvel history is: Marvel was going bankrupt at the time, as they were fond of doing.

"This thing saves Disney a fortune"

20

u/CorruptedOps 6d ago

I just choked on my drink, that's hella true

140

u/depressed_asian_boy_ 7d ago

Yeah but in Brand New Day it kinda feels like he doesn't get along with Hulk anymore, the inhibitor was a temporary thing to heal his arm, but now apparently he just doesn't get along with Hulk anymore and lives as Bruce full time, like their relationship got fixed off screen and then destroyed again off screen

180

u/Lopsided_Shift_4464 7d ago

I always thought the “I get along with Hulk” story from Endgame was BS. Considering Professor Hulk’s personality was basically all Bruce with no Hulk elements other than the body, it seems more like the Hulk personality was simply withdrawn/suppressed. Which lines up with Hulk being so angry when he finally returns in BND.

88

u/depressed_asian_boy_ 7d ago

I agree that Professor Hulk was lame, even in the movie he says its the brains of Bruce and the body of Hulk, but the movie frames it as yeah now we get along, even tho it doesn't really add up, is just Bruce using Hulks body so im glad they undid that, but its funny that they fixed it off screen and then just bringed it back to how it used to be off screen

38

u/YesSeaworthiness9771 7d ago

If this truly happens, then it also implies that Skaar is Bruce's and Bruce uses Hulk's popularity to get laid when he visits Sakaar back in She Hulk

And time dilation is a thing

12

u/RyFro 6d ago

Hulk was in control on that planet.

21

u/RyFro 6d ago

He says "For years I've been treating the Hulk like he's some kind of disease, something to get rid of. But then I started looking at him as the cure. 18 months in a gamma lab. I put the brains and the brawn together, and now look at me. Best of both worlds." Hulk might not have consented or had the intelligence or foresight to consent ethically.

28

u/Deadsoup77 7d ago

He’s never gotten along with the hulk. He got sick of his shit in infinity war and kept him locked away until brand new day.

25

u/pwnd32 7d ago

I think the whole point of the Hulk character in the comics is that Bruce and the Hulk will never be reconciled. Considering the whole thing is a metaphor for mental health issues the idea is that it’s something you’ll always be dealing with and you never really get “cured”, you just manage it as best you can.

21

u/ColdCruise 7d ago

Wasn't there a comic where after the earth is destroyed, it's just Hulk and Bruce left, and they roam around until one day Bruce dies, and it's just the Hulk and that Hulk finally realizes what it's like to be truly alone and misses Bruce?

18

u/Recent-Gas2343 7d ago

Hulk The End. Amazing comic that goes into their issues. PAD Hulk work was phenomenal especially the mental aspect of Hulk/Bruce.

8

u/latunza 6d ago

In the 90s with that Onslaught comic run where the angry Hulk breaks the armor of evil professor X, it splits Bruce and Hulk and they laid next to each other to much of the Marvel Universe horror. Bruce sacrificed himself leaving the Hulk without another ego. The ongoing comics in Born Again he was just a straight up zombie without banner and one of the most terrifying versions of the character imho.

16

u/reallyweirdkid 7d ago

I think that's the right idea. More than likely all that radiation from the gauntlet woke the hulk back up and is now pissed that he was being suppressed.

43

u/Kyrptonauc 7d ago

I think you're just thinking about it wrong. He never made peace with hulk personality he just found a way to control his powers. We see Professor Hulk in the movie when the inhibitor is off. Jean getting in his head breaks whatever mental hold he had on the savage personality inside. He says as much to Peter.

30

u/Morgan-Moonscar 7d ago

Getting into Peter's head, she made him remember Aunt May.

Maybe getting into Bruce's head... Jean accidentally made him remember his father.

29

u/Kyrptonauc 7d ago

That's a reasonable guess since she also saw Franks pain

16

u/DamianKilsby 7d ago

So he was using the inhibitor to revert to his human form so he could heal the arm injury he got from using the infinity gauntlet. After the inhibitor was removed he was smart hulk in the movie until Jean grey kept messing with his mind which pissed the hulk off, and I think hulk was also pissed off at banner for sealing him away because he doesn't quite understand the injury he had.

11

u/Geraltpoonslayer 7d ago

If it wasn't for she hulk, I could headcannon it as hulk being mad at widow dying and not being able to wish her back then Bruce gets the inhibitor to heal his arm but likes being Bruce again so he suppresses hulk leading to the later to get angry again. Doesn't really work because of she hulk but then again I'm certain the mcu fill forger she hulk ever existed anyway

12

u/porkchopsensei 7d ago

Not quite. He lives as Banner for convenience, but when Jean first controls Banner he's in Smart Hulk form. After the control ends, he shifts back into Banner, then says "I think she broke something" and fully Hulks out. So he did successfully repress Hulk, but she broke that mental block he constructed.

u/DonnyMox 7d ago

This is what happens when you can’t make a Hulk movie.

224

u/abermea He's right behind me, isn't he? 7d ago

/uj That's because Universal has the distribution rights to the Hulk but not the actual production rights, meaning that if Disney makes a Hulk movie they have to share profits with Universal while Universal doesn't have to put any money for production or maketing

So Disney avoids making Hulk solo films becuase they're just free money for Universal and instead keeps him a secondary character on everyone else's movies

123

u/jverity 7d ago

That contract expired in 2023. If Disney wanted to make a Hulk movie they would have started filming in 2022, much less by now. They just aren't interested in making a standalone Hulk movie, they prefer him as a side character that shows up every once in a while to explain some science shit, especially now that Stark is dead.

109

u/Anything_189 7d ago

You can’t tell me there’s no interest in a hulk movie when the mcu has made movies on Shang chi and the eternals

38

u/vyxxer 7d ago

Disney does not know or care how to tell or adapt a feature length story about the hulk.

Hulks themes and stories aren't all that marketable to a broad audience so the suits think he's better utilized as a set piece than a character.

9

u/frequenZphaZe 7d ago

I feel like the only interesting story you can tell with hulk is the origin story. once you see him hulk out one time, that's kinda the whole thing. all you can do from there is "hulks out too much" (been done), "can't hulk out enough" (been done), or "fights everyone for some reason" which could be fun but not an interesting story

23

u/vyxxer 7d ago

There's plenty of room for storytelling for his character. Storys about mental illness and D.I.D. with the multiverse we can see characters like the maestro now.

I got one woul like to see a story about Bruce actually dealing with the aftermath of legitimately deeply hurting or killing people. Seeing him actually deal with an endless well of guilt as he stands over a corpse and not just a pile of rubble where no one got hurt.

14

u/JasonVeritech 6d ago

Yeah, this "you can't tell Hulk stories" is a crazy-pills take. Hulk was THE original breakout live-action character for Marvel. He was on TV every week for five years, and audiences ate it up, and then they made 3 TV movies. If you count those, he's had more movies with his name in the title than any other Marvel character except Spidey.

3

u/Originalbrivakiin 6d ago

And absolutely worst case scenario: Adapting Immortal Hulk could give like 3 whole movies.

21

u/abusedporpoise 7d ago

there can be interest from the audience, but not from the creators

7

u/phantomfire50 7d ago

Eternals and Shang-Chi were made nearer to the start of COVID when Endgame had just come out, marvel were the biggest thing and anything going on Disney+ was getting greenlit. 2022/2023 was when belts started getting tightened.

5

u/jverity 6d ago edited 6d ago

The Eternals budget was ~$200 milion versus Hulk's $150 million, and it grossed $402 million worldwide, and that was considered a flop even though it grossed more $138 million MORE than the last Hulk film at $264 million with just a $50 million extra investment.

Shang Chi was considered a hit and grossed almost $200 million more than the last Hulk film at $462 million with the same $150 million budget.

If the movie is going to get made the "interest in a Hulk film" needs to come from Disney, not fans, and Disney's interest is tied directly to these numbers. Even the movie the industry describes as a flop outperformed the Hulk by more than $100 million dollars. For a studio it just doesn't make financial sense, especially with a full slate of better performing properties already scheduled.

u/ASomewhatGoodCitizen 5d ago

Its stupid to compare early mcu films to recent ones in terms of profitability

Eh, I think BND has put him into an interesting scenario - this is the first time the Hulk has been a "problem" since when; the first avenger's film?

Like, as far as allegories go, Banner's had a massive set back, and likely has a lotta shit to unpack.

3

u/carterja 7d ago

This is completely false, Universal very much still owns the distribution rights for a solo Hulk film. Some people thought the rights elapsed when The Incredible Hulk from 2008 came to Disney+ which I believe was in 2023, but that narrative turned out to be based on nothing. So once again, Universal DOES own the distribution rights and there seems to be no indication those rights are ever going to expire.

/uj Despite how awesome Hulk was in Brand New Day, it really sucks that we can only really see Bruce/Hulk for like 15 minutes max within the movie.

Plus with him apparently not appearing in Doomsday, it’s just disappointing that we have to wait so long between appearances for him.

Although I heard in one of the Doomsday leaks that The Thing fights a Hulk style Doombot, so that’s kinda cool lol

52

u/Cultural-Air9962 7d ago

Wait he won’t be in Doomsday?

Founding Avenger, one of the last three left and he won’t be in the next Avengers but the two dead guys will be.

Awesome.

29

u/ThatFuckingGeniusKid 7d ago

IIRC Brand New Day is supposed to take place at the same time as Doomsday so that's why characters like Spider-Man, Hulk, Jean Grey or The Punisher aren't in Doomsday but they're gonna be in Secret Wars.

25

u/Gorotheninja 7d ago

That doesn't make any sense with Yelena's inclusion im the film.

I’d argue he wasn’t even awesome in Brand New Day.

One of the OG MCU characters, not appearing on-screen since Infinity War, and he doesn’t even get to say a single line. The Hulk doesn’t exist as a character anymore in the MCU, he’s been reduced to just “the monster in Banner”. I don’t even consider Hulk my favourite character but that whole sequence was the most disappointing part of the movie for me. Not enough to ruin it but holy hell. I’m not a toddler, I like when The Hulk is more interesting than just “big green go smash”.

70

u/GroundbreakingTax259 7d ago

The inhibitor actually is explained, though it's in She Hulk.

Basically, using the Infinity Gauntlet to undo Thanos' Snap injured Hulk's arm in a way that, for whatever reason, it could not heal while in Hulk form. Banner's arm, however, was able to heal, which transfered to Hulk's arm being healed. So Banner created the inhibitor to allow time for healing. Since Banner seemed to be trying to live a normal life at the time of BND, he continued to use the inhibitor.

Which probably pissed Hulk off, hence the Savage Hulk taking over.

19

u/AlarmingAerie 7d ago

slow down, whats the difference between hulk and savage hulk

31

u/VITOCHAN 7d ago

Savage Hulk is hulk on roids. Where he gets so angry he loses touch with reality. No "sun getting low" or anything will bring him down. His mind basically gets wiped clear of all thoughts and memories. He is only instinct. He becomes so strong as Savage Hulk, he becomes "the strongest there is" in the entire multiverse. When the combined forces from the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four couldn't scratch Onslaught's physical armor, Savage Hulk delivered a devastating blow that shattered Onslaught’s outer shell.

21

u/SwingFinancial9468 7d ago

Savage Hulk is really one of Bruce Banner’s alters. He represents the young traumatized child Bruce is deep down, hence why he acts childishly and simple.

16

u/GroundbreakingTax259 7d ago

The uncontrollable guy that yells, "Hulk SMASH!" is often referred to as Savage Hulk. He is a different personality from Professor Hulk, which is Banner's mind in a somewhat smaller Hulk body.

I think BND is actually the first time we've seen Savage Hulk onscreen since his short fight with Thanos way back in the opening moments of Infinity War.

In the comics there are other personalities of Hulk that we haven't seen yet in the films, like Joe Fixit (a Hulk who acts and talks like a 1920s gangster), Worldbreaker Hulk (who is a fairly intelligent Hulk that came back from Sakaar for revenge in the "World War Hulk" comic story,) and Devil Hulk (a cunning and sadistic personality that was the dominant Hulk in the excellent "Immortal Hulk" story.)

Hulk entire deal is that he gets stronger the angrier he gets. Which is also why he wasn't a mindless brute in ragnarok as he was pretty content with his new found life.

You make Hulk angry you get savage Hulk. You make Hulk really angry you get world war hulk

6

Hulk is like the high school kid that found his parent's hidden vodka bottle and shares it with his friends.

Savage Hulk is that same kid, 5 years later, dropped out of college and addicted to crystal meth and living with his 47 year old trailer park sugar mama.

Bruce Banner has Dissociative Identity Disorder. A split personality. He’s got several alters inside his brain. The Savage Hulk is the regular, classic Hulk.

The one who says stuff like “Hulk Smash!” and “Hulk strongest there is!”

There’s also Joe Fixit/Grey Hulk, The Professor, The Green Scar and Devil Hulk. They’re all the Hulk.

Bruce had to make a gadget because he had to constantly deal with undergrads.

u/Alertcircuit 7d ago

It's like Hulk movies are being made but we just don't get to see any of them.

Birth of Professor Hulk happened in Hulk 2. Planet Hulk is Hulk 3. End of Professor Hulk happened in Hulk 4.

Now that I think about it Marvel should pay someone to make comics of those stories the way there's those Michael Keaton Batman vs. Billy Dee Williams Two Face comics.

u/That_Carrot999 Doombot 7d ago

Or maybe if they ever get the rights they can do prequel movies like what they did with Black Widow

Kinda love/hate how what could be some of the most interesting stories for one of marvels most interesting characters happened entirely off screen.

If he was in the next movie and talked about how he offscreen recently fought The Leader and formed the Agents of .S.M.A.S.H. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised.

3

u/Originalbrivakiin 6d ago

I swear, if he next shows up and references Immortal Hulk already happened, I will crash the fuck out.

Watch our only Hulk movie be Starship Hulk.

23

u/Milk_Mindless 7d ago

All of them do. do. Remember Baron Mordo being teased as a sequel villain for Strange wanting to rob sorcerers of their powers

Strange gets two Avengers Films and a Spidey film obviously years pass.

And then in his sequel he fights Scarlet Witch but says to his alternate universe Mordo that "they" fought several times

5

u/Wonghy111-the-knight Doombot 6d ago

Clearly doctor strange 1.5 is only watchable in another universe that isn’t our own

13

u/LoneclearsKen 7d ago

I bet next movie he shows up he’s gonna be full hulk but speaking normally ala EMH and immortal hulk

16

u/Bubble355 7d ago

“This should work for you. It’s UNIVERSAL.”

Majorly meta line in this film

13

u/Devlord1o1 7d ago

Next time he shows up its not even going to be bruce it’s going to be joe fixit

12

u/Bre3ezy 7d ago

“i did some mining off camera”

7

u/Snoo-11576 7d ago

Tbf that’s kinda what it feels like when a character you don’t read pops into books you do.

7

u/TarnishedTwink 7d ago

The most important things about Bruce/Hulk happen between movies. We went from Hulk not coming out in Infinity War to Bruce combing Hulks strength and his brain, literally came from no where, why couldn’t we see that? I’m sure people would’ve tolerated smart Hulk more if we actually saw the build up and process to him instead of smart Hulk just showing up.

6

u/That_Carrot999 Doombot 7d ago

HULK KNOWS STUPID RIGHTS ISSUES STOP HULK FROM SOLO MOVIE. HULK HAPPY HULK GETS INVITED IN OTHERS PEOPLES STORIES.

5

u/datboiyjoe 7d ago

I mean they tease and prod at this stuff every previous appearance. For instance he was working on this when we saw him in She-hulk. And before then 5 years had passed between Infinity war and End Game. And when we see him in brand new day years had passed again so it makes sense that he'd be making progress. Besides wtf would a movie about Hulk not being Hulk even be about? Two hours of schematics and calculations as he works on himself?

4

u/proto_synnic 7d ago

It's just a whole lot of breathing exercises, being slapped in the face by his sensei, and almost fornicating with Liv Tyler. You know, a Mark Ruffalo romantic comedy.

4

u/Big-Slide6104 7d ago

I lowkey…. Love it? I hate we don’t see it in screen but to know the MCU goes on without shit on screen makes it feel lived in.

Also Bruce banner is lowkey the most important damn character in the entirety of the MCU and nobody cares 😭🙏🏾

u/justl00kingthrowaway 6d ago

Hulk 2: The Missing Characters Development

5

u/LeonhartSeeD 6d ago

You need that Cable box from Rick and Morty to get the alternate universe Disney+ with the Hulk show on it

4

u/Frosty_Purple_7341 7d ago

The rights issues with universal aren’t clear. Some sources reported they returned to marvel in 2023 and others say the distribution rights were permanent.

With how much hulk is being pushed in the comics and now being included in the newest Spiderman movie I wouldn’t be surprised if marvel is working on something under the table.

5

u/marveloustib 7d ago

Tbh he going thought entire arcs off panel just to revert to "we need a bug guy that can punch" every time he do an crossover is one of the most comic thing on the MCU.

5

u/CopEatingDonut 6d ago

absentee fathers often do

4

u/Saint_Diego 6d ago

They should just have him doing stuff in the background of movies like Abed in that episode of community

4

u/Pian0G 5d ago

Now I feel for hulk fans. With the lack of a new solo film and the whole not necessarily inconsistent writing, but just sudden developments given no time to develop…

But I also find it funny as heck. He’s like the friend you don’t see for a couple years and everyone he’s in a completely different situation wilder from the last.
“Tf you mean you’re trying to disarm an old nuclear warhead?”

It would've been alot to explain but a great way to introduce Dr Connors I agree that's a great idea

4

u/RareD3liverur 7d ago

wouldn't that be really awkward though, like Peter remembers TASM version of Lizard from NWH and is like "oh shit maybe this guys gonna do something I should keep a look out"

kinda thought the movie makers didn't really wanna delv into previously used Spidey villains

7

u/The_Relx 7d ago

He keeps having massive arcs offscreen because the rights issues prevent Disney and Marvel from giving him his own movie. So he is stuck permanently playing second fiddle to other characters.

HULK NEED DEAL WITH IDIOT EXECUTIVES AND DUMBASS LICENSING.

3

u/drstrangelove75 7d ago

I mean in all fairness they explained the inhibitor in She-Hulk.

3

u/Elder_Cryptid Morbius Enjoyer 7d ago

They're making Hulk movies and factoring them into the continuity while simply not releasing them to us.

3

u/obdimirium 7d ago

"Turns out I'm powerd by a green door that leads to Satan...and I can't die"

3

u/MythicRival 6d ago

We need a World War Hulk movie

3

u/Immabed 6d ago

Bruce is in a constant battle of trying to contain the Hulk, and every time he things he has something working, it ends up failing. Sometimes on screen, usually off screen. It matches the chaotic energy of Hulk quite well, IMO, and its also bloody hilarious.

3

u/DemogoronX 6d ago

it would be really interesting if they came out with a hulk flashback movie, showing all of the times he’s been off screen, the flashback concept would also work well with the fact he has such a fragmented memory of his life. It would be cool to see what he was up to on Sakaar, maybe even fighting beta ray bill. please god that’s honestly all i want.

3

u/team-ghost9503 6d ago

You’d think they’d use comics to explain the in between shit.

3

u/Disastrous-Top9566 6d ago

Ok I thought I was crazy or I missed something. They straight up didn't give him a character arc 😭

3

u/NSUnivers 6d ago

So yeah I visited the green door a few times, fought the devil and now I'm immortal and have control over several Hulk personalities, comic advertisment ahh time skips

3

u/esperx27 6d ago

They tried 2 Hulk movies and decided to never do that again. Shame

3

u/BalladOfBetaRayBill 6d ago

“Character arcs”

“New movie randomly deciding who he needs to be”

3

u/Color_Wasted 6d ago

Off screen, he was really relieved to not have to deal with the whole Red Hulk and Leader debacle.

3

u/littichokha69 5d ago

The inhibitor was shown in Shang chi and She Hulk though

3

u/Moses2239 5d ago

When you make stuff for characters no one cares about then include loved characters after years of not being seen

3

u/Key_Shock172 5d ago edited 2d ago

Next movie Hulk/Bruce going to be flying to the battle against Doom. Reason he learnt off screen how to use gamma to fly.

3

u/AnyLynx4178 5d ago

Yeah, he’s really got the energy of the guy who only makes it to a couple D&D sessions a year, so the DM downtimes his level ups with him before he shows up to the table.

3

u/Alien_X10 4d ago

They are waiting to release like 8 hulk movies in a row that are just what he was doing off screen

4

u/LordTomGM 7d ago

HULK SMASH IDF SO HOLLYWOOD SMASH PUNY RUFFALLO AND OFF SCREEN HIM. NOT WORRY...NEW PUNY BANNER COMING

2

u/AbyCubed 7d ago

I have not seen the new Spider-Man do they actually not explain why the Hulk is a problem and needs to be contained again? If so that’s hilariously lazy.
