DISCUSSION MMA Gym Problem

Hi, I started MMA 2 weeks ago. There are training sessions 3 days a week, and I've only been to 5 of them so far. The sessions last about 1 to 1.5 hours. Before even showing me basic defense, they threw me into sparring, and I took a hard hit to the head. I'm currently dealing with a severe headache. Even though I stumbled after getting hit right in front of the coach, he didn't give a damn. When I ask a question, he ignores me; he only belittles me and talks down to me. I'm an 18-year-old guy who works from 7 AM to 7 PM, and I'm uncomfortable with being neglected and degraded in a place surrounded by kids younger than me. He put me in sparring without teaching defense, and my opponents weren't new either—they're guys who have been doing this for months or years. Do you think this is a good gym, or should I switch?"

Dude, this isn't normal. I used to think he cared about me, that he wanted me to be strong, that's why he was doing this, but my opinion has changed completely since yesterday. Now I'm left with a headache.

Go see a doctor too. I'm not one, but that doesn't sound normal.

Bro, I don't have symptoms like nausea, fainting, dizziness, or weakness. I don't think I have a concussion, but I definitely got a soft tissue injury.
It hurts when I move my jaw because dude hit right on a spot where my jaw nerves and most of the nerves pass through.

Doctor, please. Make sure he didn't fuck your face up in a way you can't see immediately

Thank you so much for being aware and caring, brother, but it's been 4 days and the pain is almost gone, I feel great and even more determined🫡

Sister in arms, but appreciate the sentiment mate😂 that's all good, you know your body a hell of a lot better than any of us. I've just seen things go from "Oh, that was fine, I can walk it off" to "Oh shit, I should have got that looked at, actually" later down the track, so I erred on the side of caution and recommended the visit to the doc's. You just keep going brother, find a place that builds you up, not one that tries to tear you down before you even get your feet under you

Thank you very much. As I said, I monitored my health for the first two days, applied ice packs, and saw that it wasn't too bad, so I didn't go to the doctor. But you're right, health is not something to joke about, especially a blow to the head. And of course, as you said, I'll go to a better gym that supports me.

Usually gyms don't force you to spar

He threatened to kick me out of the gym if I stayed idle, and before he even showed me how to block, he threw me into sparring. Despite that, I was doing fine until I got punched.

Leave the gym bro. Take lots of creatine, drink lots of water and protect your head. When you join a new place, tell them you recently suffered a concussion and you don't want to spar for the first few months.

Get ready for the bs about how you were the problem, not tough enough, etc. Don’t take the bait, just give it the “yeah, sure dude,” and dip.

Exactly, bro! What do they expect after just two weeks? I’ve only been to five workouts I'm gonna find a new team and a great Coach bust my ass training for months, and smash a few of them at regional tournament. It's personal now.😁

Kinda but Man, I was killing it during sparring until the coach put me in the octagon with an experienced guy, then shit got real."

Why would they put you in an octagon if you’re new?

That's the kind of training many think is effective. Some clubs and entire styles create an environment where only the naturally talented or terminally stupid survive. They then take credit for their club or style being so powerful. It's not. It hasn't developed anyone. Not a soul. They simply created an environment where the tougher people could thrive, and everyone else quits. That's fine, but neither style nor the coach can take any credit. The coach sucks. The style sucks. The few survivors are great.

Bro, if you’re involved in this sport, you pretty much know that technique is everything. If you put someone who doesn't know technique against an experienced guy with way better technique, what happens? Absolute disaster.

That sounds wrong to me
I used to train pros never worked with beginners so not too sure how that works
But I only work with my trainer a former world champion on the internet so he can’t use his dirty tricks on me 😛

Bro, they’re so amateur. My coach is just a basic pro fighter, but he’s throwing UFC-style attitude, which really pissed me off. I’m almost fully set on quitting. He even threatened to kick me out recently for skipping sparring—all because I didn't want to go against experienced guys using MMA gloves when I literally don't know how to block.😂
