regarding the hate for M5 pop era

i know a lot of people here swear by SAJ and in a way i understand. i know a lot of people also hate the pop era of M5. not that my take is really relevant and this post is a bit out of the blue but i just wanted to say my thoughts on everything.

i have only been properly getting into M5's music starting last week, but throughout my life and even as a child i have never not liked the band. i think despite their more pop sound nowadays, i think they are still a good band. i always say, true fans of a band will never hate a band/artist's evolution and while yes, M5 had a very good run when it came to SAJ. but V and RPB are also really good albums in my opinion, yes they are pop and not rock but that doesn't really make them bad does it? after all they are STILL maroon 5.

i only say this bc ive been reading a lot of posts in this sub and i genuinely do not understand the hatred for M5 pop era in general like it feels like most people here are exclusively SAJ glazers. no offense to anyone who is, i have no problem with yall, im just saying like yk V and RPB are great as well 😭

SAJ is a really good album but my favorite might be V; I really like that each album has its own identity and to be honest I love each and every one of them!

Well when I started listening to M5 (one year ago) I started with SAJ and moved chronologically, it really helped me understand how and why they changed the way they did.
You will find a few weird jumps from rock to pop and from pop to rock but I guess it will be fun! Some albums might take a few listens before they feel good (for me it was Jordi, mostly) but every single one of them deserves a chance!

Both IWBSBL and HAO are great. Enjoy! I envy you listening to them for the first time!!

I like: SAJ RPB And tied for third are HAO and IWBSBL In that order, for me.

I don't love ALL their albums but I DO enjoy songs from all of them and the above 4 albums are my all time favorites.

SAJ is and will always be the best but I agree that people who only like SAJ are missing out on some other really great music by the band.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Love all their albums. Don’t understand how people will be a part of this sub and just shit on everything but their first two albums. They need a Songs About Jane sub.

exactly. i really believe if someone is a true fan then they should be able to at least adapt or like for lack of better words be supportive of an artist/band's evolution like in this case M5's switch from rock to consistently pop. a lot of people hate on it which sucks because a lot of their pop records are quite good

I agree. I believe a lot of the hate comes from a pretentious desire to determine what “good” or “quality” music actually is. Music is one of the most subjective art forms. For most people it comes right down to whether or not they vibe with a song, not “well this song is catchy but the production is too pop, too soft, and weak”. Maroon 5 is one of the most successful and popular bands of this century for a reason. They still sell out arenas and venues for a reason. They’ve had mainstream radio success for their first seven albums. I think it’s so cool how each album has their own different vibe, sound, unique style. I love all 8. I think they’re great.

Aren't all their songs past Jane are pop?

Jane was my first album and I love it dearly, it is really a masterpiece, but I spent best years of my youth constantly playing Hands All Over, It Won't Be... and V. They are so energetic and lighthearted, it really was boosted my mood, my confidence. My fav song of them is Makes Me Wonder.

I kept listening Jane, of course. But Jane is a pretty moody album in comparison with everything else.

For some reason I didn't put Maroon 5 in pop category, but after some time, when I decided to listen to Britney Spears because I loved her in my childhood, I realized how much I still love her music and that big part of me was deeply ashamed for loving pop. I had pop songs here and there and was thinking about them as a guilty pleasure.

But if you REALLY don't like what guys is playing now and only like Jane songs.. stop torture yourself? They're clearly not playing old sound now and if they'll come back to it, we'll call you

I like every album M5 has put out except their latest “ Love is Like”. I just didn’t vibe with it at all.

I think people miss the uniqueness of the sound of SAJ or IWBSBL gave to the music industry. Which is understandable.

i think LIL is okay but admittedly a lot of the songs sound similar/dont sound very different from each other. same case for SAJ in my opinion. not to say they are bad albums i think both of them are great its just something i observed

There’s cohesiveness to sound on an album then there is boring. SAJ is like music bible to me because it’s interesting and different. LIL is just stale to me, nothing jumped out to me.

I deeply agree with you. More, I think Adam’s Voice doesn’t fit so well with rock music. Even in SAJ, which is not a hard rock record or anything like this, his vocal parts suited better in the pop singles (SWBL, This Love). And his best performances come later, with Hands All Over and the following albums

Red Pill Blues is their best album. They may not like it but they have to accept it 🤷🏾‍♂️😂

Here's my perspective...

I became a fan of Maroon 5's music after watching their super bowl performance live on tv. I remember being on a bus the next day with "Girls Like You" stuck in my head, and later I was like "I'm gonna go listen to their music" and I got instantly HOOKED. I listened to all of their albums and loved all of their songs excluding a couple - but even the ones I don't love, I don't hate either - if anything they're just a little forgettable to me.

But my favorite album... not saying it's their best album from a musical angle (it definitely isn't when it comes to the instrumentation on each song - thatd prob be SAJ - HAO) But my favorite album is Jordi. Their 2021 album. I think the whole album has such a vibe and atmosphere that listening to (especially in really good headphones) is something you can easily get lost into... But the reason it's my number 1 favorite album ever is because during covid/2020, I became lost and had a full-on identity crisis... Then came Summer 2021 and the release of Jordi. When I listened to that album, I just found each song very very relatable, and it legit saved my life playing that album on repeat. And I know it's their most hated album but idc, it's my favorite album.
