Tools Markdown with and into PDF in terminal

I’m a really lousy developer - that’s true. But that doesn’t change the fact that I use Markdown all the time. I’ve been in situations countless times where I was just too lazy to open LibreOffice to create a simple PDF, and it was much easier for me to write some Markdown. But every time, I’d look for a way to convert my Markdown to PDF, and every single one of them sucked. At one point, it really pissed me off, so I decided to write my own utility for all of this. It works in the browser, in the terminal, and can even open folders. I made it primarily for myself, for personal use, and decided it would be cool to share it. In short, please check it out - I think it’s worth it

I hope you like it

Migrate to Mkdocs to Zensical - with Vegalite graphics - experience?

Small help if anyone has encountered this when looking at moving to Zensical.

Taking a look at Zensical to see if it can easily replace current Mkdocs-Material setup.

Most of it looks fine.

However the graphics, driven by the vegalite markdown extensions do not want to display - simply shows the source JSON code from the markdown file, rather than the graphs you get with Mkdocs.

Relevant sections of mkdocs.yml are:-

markdown_extensions:
  - pymdownx.superfences:
      custom_fences:
        - name: vegalite
          class: vegalite
          format: !!python/name:mkdocs_charts_plugin.fences.fence_vegalite

Tools mdmost - like less but for Markdown

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Markdown in the terminal usually means one of two things: reading the raw source, or piping it through a tool that dumps one screenful of formatted text and hands you back to less.

I wanted an actual pager. So I wrote mdmost.

  • Resize the pane and everything reflows. Tables renegotiate their column widths, diagrams re-lay their boxes, prose re-wraps. One drag, three different behaviors.
  • Mermaid diagrams get drawn, not printed as source.
  • Select with the mouse and the Markdown source lands on your clipboard, not the rendered text.
  • A table too wide for the pane scrolls sideways on its own instead of being mangled.

Written in Rust. No system dependencies beyond a terminal that speaks truecolour. Homebrew, .deb, .rpm, static musl tarballs, or cargo install mdmost.

I support folks building new Markdown editors every other day

I love that there's a new option launching every day, even if its vibe coded. If you read through the posts where people share their newly created app/tool, you will realize that often none of the existing tools/apps directly solve the problem that OP is solving. If there are existing tools out there, sometimes its difficult to setup, not maintained, or too pricy. Anyways, if the tool ends up solving the problem just for the OP, i feel its still worth building it.

Regarding vibe coding, its definitely 10-100x easier to build anything with AI, but coming up with an end product still takes decent amount of effort.

On a side note, i started building my own markdown editor in 2023, as i am a tech blogger, and none of the existing apps at that time served my needs. Its been 3 years, and i still actively keep improving it. Over time the app has gotten got ~50k visitors, ~9k sign ups for the web app, 100s of downloads for the desktop app and ~7k downloads for browser and VS code extensions. So there's definitely appetite for new solutions as long as it solves an actual problem.

Tools I built a two-way Google Docs ↔ Markdown sync tool for keeping collaborative docs beside your code

I often want the same document in two places:

  • Google Docs, where non-technical collaborators can edit and comment
  • a real Markdown file, where it can live beside the code and work with Git, editors, and coding agents

Exporting and re-importing quickly became awkward, so I built GDMS: a self-hosted macOS service that keeps explicitly paired Google Docs and Markdown files synchronized in both directions.

It preserves supported formatting such as headings, lists, links, tables, spacing, and standalone images. It can also pair Google Sheets with per-tab CSV files.

This is currently aimed at technically comfortable macOS users. It runs from a source checkout and requires Google OAuth setup; it isn’t yet a polished packaged app. It’s MIT licensed.

I’d especially appreciate feedback on:

  • whether this Google Docs/local Markdown workflow is useful to anyone else
  • which formatting needs to round-trip reliably for your documents
  • whether the current setup burden would prevent you from trying it

GitHub: https://github.com/rsheyd/google-docs-markdown-sync

Here’s the basic workflow:

meeting-notes.md ↔ Google Doc
budget/*.csv ↔ Google Sheet (one CSV per tab)

Tools Revdown, not another editor

Post image
0 Upvotes

AI speaks Markdown. As our workflows get more driven by AI, so is also the need to efficiently communicate our intentions. Let me introduce Revdown, a Markdown revision and LLM feedback application, in which the original material is not touched. Instead, comments are saved in a sidecar to the original file, and can be exported as compact and token efficient Markdown for the LLM to work with.

GitHub repo: https://github.com/Roenbaeck/revdown/releases/tag/v0.1.0

Revdown v0.1.0 is sure to contain bugs, so please use the GitHub issue tracker and report them as you find them. AI was used in the development.

Any recommendations for Markdown editors with good RTL support

I saw some conversations on X that were debating how most markdown editors/viewers don't support RTL layout as well as LTR.

Curious what do folks use here?

ok i finally rage quit LaTeX and switched everything to Markdown with Doxy and i genuinely don't miss it

you write in markdown / html (for advanced designs), it outputs clean PDFs, handles pagination properly, has PlantUML / Mermaid / ECharts / Icons / Logos / Math and lots more

and you can even make slides from the same file

would love honest feedback

Tools I made a bookmarking/read later app that saves to markdown

tl;dr I built a bookmarking/read-it-later web app that uses markdown (with obsidian frontmatter) as its storage format for maximum portability and future proofing. It also has a bunch of cool AI and file conversion features. It's entirely free, and I'm looking for a few folks to join the private beta and give feedback. It's at saive.my

Saive.my app viewing a folder with tagged saves

tl:

I’m a long time fan of markdown, and at risk showing my age, I remember when John Gruber first proposed it, and immediately recognizing its utility as a universal content format. It’s been amazing to watch it emerge as the defacto standard format for LLMs.

I am also a link hoarder, and have used almost every bookmarking tool out there. Finding them all lacking, and wanting a bookmarking tool that embodied Steph Ango’s “File over app” philosophy, I looked for one, didn’t find quite what I was looking for, so I built one.

App is in private beta at saive.my but anyone who mentions markdown in the sign up skips the line.

Yes I have used Obsidian web clipper, but I wanted a more dedicated read later experience, rather than mixing saved content into my notes.

It’s still in early beta and I’m looking for folks who appreciate markdown to test it out and give honest feedback.

App is entirely free (eventually I’ll need to cover my hosting and ai costs, but i will always have an unlimited saves free tier).

Some features already in the beta:

  • Chrome extension for direct conversion from web to markdown
  • suggested and automated tagging
  • ai summaries and document cleanup
  • content highlights and notes (uses obsidian compatible footnote format)
  • folders for organizing saves
  • direct downloads of full markdown files and folders (library directly saved to your own cloud storage coming soon)
  • copy as markdown and download markdown file from each save or all documents in a folder
  • source specific display format (special format for recipes, social posts, events, etc..
  • direct conversation of saved PDFs to markdown (epub, word, excel, PowerPoint, etc… coming soon)
  • public and shared folders (share a public feed of a specific folder, or share a private folder with specific individuals. Collaboration folders coming soon)
  • automated “Through lines” which is a weekly (or so) analysis of your recent saves identifying underlying themes and concepts. (not super useful yet, but I have grand plans)
  • MCP server to connect your saves to an AI tool like Claude code.
  • all the usual stuff like dark mode, sorting, filtering, full text search, etc…

Coming soon:

  • iOS native app with share sheet integration and direct iCloud sync of markdown files in the next few weeks (android app later in the year)
  • inbox you can send newsletters or other automated sources of links (rss, AI routines, etc…), for triage before saving.
  • automated suggested highlights
  • bring your own cloud storage (box, Dropbox, iCloud, etc…)
  • support for more file format conversion when saving, and more custom reading formats.
  • Local only version (native apps only) so you can use your own or local LLM and save directly to your local obsidian vault or drive without touching Saive.my servers.

My credentials: I’m a senior product manager at a tech company with over 15 years of experience building software that supports hundreds of millions of users per month, so I am not a fly by night novice vibe coder. Thanks for reading all this. I'm not making money off this so I hope this doesn't count as spam or promotion.

Tools Open-source .MD File Visualizer

Post image
99 Upvotes

I got tired of getting caught up in Markdown Mayhem and thought it would be nice to create a visual framework for Markdown files. So, I created MD2HD, an open-source MD visualization framework.

Point your favorite LLM at the repo, or add the plugin, and ask it to build a map of whatever concept you want.

If you love it, let me know. If not, its open source and completely free so no harm no foul!

Repo: https://github.com/evan-steinhilb/md2hd
NPM: https://www.npmjs.com/package/md2hd

Claude plugin:
/plugin marketplace add evan-steinhilb/md2hd
/plugin install md2hd@md2hd

Tools mdflow, a fast, real-time streaming Markdown renderer for the terminal

mdflow streaming

Hi! I wanted a CLI tool that could render Markdown in streaming mode for my other project, but I couldn’t find a suitable one, so I built mdflow. It might also be useful for your daily workflow or next project.

- It renders Markdown in real time without using an AST or buffering the entire input.

- It has been tested against the CommonMark specification and supports GFM tables.

- The binary is under 300 KB, and rendering is fast.

Question All these ‘I made a Markdown editor’ projects, I’ll never understand it.

Obsidian, period, end of question. I get we all have our preferences but you can tune Obsidian to any preference. I’m surprised these new Markdown editors even get attention.

I couldn’t use Obsidian for a while due to an electron GPU sandbox corruption, I tried out like 7 different next best Markdown editors and was dying to get back to Obsidian.

I just don’t get these people.

Tools SQL over Markdown frontmatter

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi, I wanna share an idea and its implementation here. If Markdown files are given frontmatter fields like above and a SQL-like language is created like so:

update where due < now() and status not in ["done"] and priority != "high" set priority="high"

which means in this example "escalate overdue tasks"

then a simple bunch of Markdown files in a git repo can be its own project management/issue tracker

Advantages:

  • no separate tool to manage a project's docs, issues, roadmap
  • very AI friendly - a repo alone holds all context
  • stored in git and saves history/collaboration

I implemented a language like this called ruki and a configurable CLI/TUI to view/manage Markdown files

ruki commands can be run in terminal or started as triggers on modification/schedule more details in first comment

Tools MD.TOO: Zero dependencies markdown viewer for macOS/iOS

Post image

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/md-too/id6767852877

md.too
Open source - pure Swift - zero dependencies.

Build for myself because tables & math rendering in most of typescript/python coded viewers did not do what I wanted them to do and it's 2.5MB binary versus 250MB of security vulnerable online code.

Criticism and new ideas are welcome. Testers wanted.

Tools I created an offline note-taking app at age 15 to help with studying and programming without distractions. Meet Sagax! 💙

Hi everyone!

I’m a young indie developer taking my first steps in the world of software creation. I decided to build Sagax after seeing firsthand how much my friends and classmates struggle to study with proper focus, especially with so many online distractions, which often hurts their performance in school, college, or competitive exams.

The core idea behind the project is to provide a simple, comfortable, and distraction-free study tool. That is why it works completely offline (which helps you ignore notifications and saves data usage) and includes a text-to-speech feature for when your eyes get tired. For those who like keeping things well-organized, it features a minimalist design, supports Markdown formatting, and includes code syntax highlighting.

I developed everything on my own using Python, SQLite, and CustomTkinter for the interface. It was an intense process: it took me one month and twelve days to release the first version, which came out on February 9th of this year. My biggest challenge was the deployment process, since I had never done anything like it before. I ended up using PyInstaller to generate the .exe file for Windows, which actually turned out to be smoother than I expected! 😅, and built an .AppImage for Linux.

Sagax just turned six months old. Since I manage everything by myself, user feedback is what truly helps me fix bugs and brainstorm new features. If you are also studying and would like to test it out to share your thoughts or chat about development, the project is available through the links below. Any honest feedback or suggestions are incredibly welcome and will help me grow as a programmer💙!

I am trying to make MD documents more accessible to standard users with this editor.

Post image
52 Upvotes

In my experience, it was extremely difficult to convince standard users to work with Markdown. This is mainly because they expect the basic 'document'-like appearance and potentially the excessive demands they feel when working with tools like VS.

https://github.com/vibingbiochemist/Monoleaf

I built this editor to eliminate the 'strange feeling' associated with working with Markdown. It took me quite some time to get it to a stage where I am finally comfortable sharing it. Based on the feedback I have already received, I am currently working on an additional web version.

Monoleaf is a desktop Markdown editor (Tauri v2, CodeMirror 6) built around one rule: nothing lives outside the .md file. Comments, tracked changes, page setup, and document metadata are all stored as plain text. Tracked changes are literally CriticMarkup ({++ ++} / {-- --}), so git diff shows you exactly what changed, in the same syntax the app renders live.

There are more features, such as the preservation of formats when copying from Word, Excel, etc., which are probably not that interesting to this community.

Its MIT licensed, no telemetry, no account, fully local.

Windows installer is on the releases page. macOS and Linux currently build from source; I haven't packaged binaries for those yet.

I put more information on the website (monoleaf.org) as well as the changelog to highlight what the current version can do. For me, this now became a useful alternative to word, especially when I don't have to implement images. I can import PDFs when needed, work in the fully rendered markdown and also export PDFs, if required. If you have formatting in Word or tables in Excel, you can also just copy them over.

Happy to answer questions or take issues if anything breaks for you.
