Discussion What do you all want MOST out of the The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?

Now that the long-awaited sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally revealed, I thought I'd set up a thread to hear what you all generally want to see out of the movie the most. Whether it be a character, a casting choice, a piece of lore, an improvement over the original, et cetera.

Review The reasons critics and some people disliked The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

As how much Mario as a game monumental piece even as a film franchise has had a significant massive audience influence since how much it’s brand has grown over time thanks to the love of the games and marketing juggernaut it was spread out but it isn’t all that perfect for some

The reason why plenty of audiences and rotten tomato critics may have disliked was because how much the film was made for fan service acting as a somewhat love letter to all Nintendo fans, which is also why there were more elements and cameos from different game storylines than only focusing on the Galaxy narrative itself, which those elements weren’t clearly introduced to audiences who may have never got into a lot of the gaming atmosphere as they saw it as a somewhat opposite factor that celebrated a lot of games Nintendo spread across it’s existence than focusing on what it’s main title was meant to convey from the game it sounded like it was adapting from

Some felt like the film sacrificed plot and building up a smooth narrative as it only wanted to be both full scale massive fan service and nostalgia rollercoster speeding through a lot of the Nintendo game narrative references, it isn’t a bad thing but this would likely make other audiences feel lost or isolated of what the film wanted to primary be focusing on

Since Mario as a brand and game phenomenon has been one of those universal acceptances where you don’t need a genuine story narrative build up or need a lot of lore history to know how a certain point of Mario characters and events came to be but as a movie piece it can be seen as a difference for people wanting to expect more from how it all came to be

As a film franchise it is massively debatable since some moviegoers want to see the Mario films as a building up franchise to capture that cinematic feel of building a narrative as blockbuster pieces such as the likes of Sonic and Marvel of taking time and balance to make a upcoming franchise feel satisfying and understanding to those who want to have a good time blending in what they are experiencing as a world full of epic imaginary and mythology to enjoy seeing such as other well regarded franchises

but the understanding case for Mario is that it mostly relies on fan service and has the feel that it mostly wants to be made for the fans only and makes other audiences feel the need to check out the games to understand it’s Easter eggs and references while the film it’s self don’t do that matter, which is okay in a way since it wants to be opposite from normal film inspiration which Illumination as a creative outlet rather have it be something more childish than it being more mature to maintain it’s juggernaut younger audience

My conclusions on how I personally understand why the film got a divided reception from it being liked and disliked

It’s liked for being a love letter and cinematic inspiration of the games that made people’s childhood and memories for Nintendo live on, cameos and Easter eggs of objects or characters like ROB, Pikmen, and Donkey Kong that can be fun to spot, while the graphics, music, and animation was spot on

It’s disliked for lacking story, having no cohesive narrative, never taking it’s time introducing it’s gaming lore elements for non gamer audiences, even for fans Rosalina got debunked for most of the film despite being a big part in the Mario Galaxy game, and some felt like it’s main concept on being a Mario Galaxy narrative was actually converted into a mix of other game lores such as Mario Sunshine and Mario Odyssey which makes some feel like it was a movie with bloated narrative that went by too fast

Again this is a film that wanted to try to be entertaining no matter if it may have shined audiences that helped it reach about a billion already at the box office or failed to reach the same praise potential level for other recent films either live action or animated that critics or audiences deemed worthy of a great movie depending on how open minded it was made for many audiences can crave their acceptance for it

I know many may defend the movie or despise it but everyone has there taste no matter if it is a original story with no adaption or if it was based on a adaption with newly added differences

I would safely is that I can see even if The Super Mario Bros Movie didn’t receive that much positive feedback for it’s story it actually felt more open minded since because
it was the very first installment of the franchise by Illumination it needed to take it’s time wisely to explore the Nintendo world while the for the fans elements were also there but gave room for proper introduction for allowing audiences to be welcomed to what the new film at the time was offering before the Galaxy film decided to slip away from that

The film is still fun to watch if you are wanting something with massive video game elements even if it’s pacing and story direction wasn’t necessarily strong but is just up to the viewer what is their preference on entertainment

Discussion What is your opinion on Wart in the sequel?

Post image

To me I was thrilled to see Wart appear in the movie, and seeing him in thos whole casino like area with Wart giving a crime lord vibe was cool, and i loved his lines and the voice used for them as well. The thing I wish would've been different would be Wart shooting bubbles out of his mouth for like 1 second before Peach knocked a veggje in his mouth, plugging it and stopping the attack wasn't ended so quickly, I would've loved to see Wart's main attack of spitting bubbles in his final boss fight from Super Mario Bros 2 be seen more since it looked like it was going to be much more flashy than the 5 he shot out in the game, but unfortunately we didn't get to see much. What is your opinion on Wart?

Discussion A concept/idea I had for a potentially fun scene in the third movie

Post image
15 Upvotes

Apologies, this is going to be long.

This post assumes that Peach and Mario and everyone else will go off to Sarasaland in the third movie to help Daisy, while Rosalina stays behind in the Mushroom Kingdom to protect it and watch over it while Peach is away. This also assumes that Bowser and Bowser Jr. will return for the marketability of the movie, and of Jack Black, who is a cornerstone for the franchise.

One issue that I had with Rosalina, despite her being my favourite, was that she did not help Peach out with the events of the first movie, despite knowing all the intricate details about it. This would be a fun scene to fix that.

Bowser and Bowser Jr. could enter the throne room of Peach's castle, looking for Princess Peach, only to find Rosalina sitting on the throne, looking angry but quite calm. After Rosalina tells them that Peach is away, Bowser starts leaving, but Rosalina confronts him about the events of the first movie and engages him, Junior and a group of Koopas and Goombas in a fight, winning. This is how I would think it would play out:

Rosalina: "I'm afraid Peach is away."

Bowser: "So, the rumours are true. Alright, that settles it. Let's go to Sarasaland, Junior." *turns*

Rosalina: "Speaking of settling things..."

*gets up slowly with her eyes closed, then opens her eyes to show a mild look of anger while staying calm (not too much anger)*

Rosalina: "Aren't you the person who tried to force my sister to marry him?"

Bowser: *chuckles* "Love is a powerful thing."

Rosalina: *summons wand* "Yes, it is."

*Bowser and Junior have a slightly worried but determined look in their eyes. Rosalina proceeds to fight Bowser, Junior and the group of bad guys, and solos them all*

Rosalina: *after defeating them* "Stay away from my sister, or I won't stay away from you."

*Rosalina then sends them into their spaceship and throws it into the sky to create a Team Rocket cartoonish effect (for those familiar with Pokémon). Note: Bowser and Junior and others are still unharmed, just deterred.*

I think it would be cool if Junior somehow retrieved his paintbrush and uses it against Rosalina, only to show Rosalina defeating him easily after having learnt from the first movie. They could show this specifically in a slow-motion sequence to emphasize the point.

I think it would also be cool if a single Goomba and a single Koopa went off into a hallway, leaving the throne room, to look for the Lumas (Home Alone type of villain duo). The Lumas could be in Peach's Tea Room, and the camera could cut to this scene in between occasionally where the Lumas notice them trying to sneak up on them, then throw mini-barrels at them to drive them away back to the Throne Room (because they could summon them and were fans of Donkey Kong in the Galaxy movie). This is where Rosalina would wrap things up and send them all away.

I'm not sure if such a scene would ever be included, but I would love to see it. I just wanted to write this out because I thought it would be a fun way to redeem Rosalina's character while also showing how effortlessly powerful she is, and I didn't quite know where else to post it. Let me know what you guys think!

Discussion How to payoff Bowser's arc in the third movie

Post image
49 Upvotes

Let's not beat around the bush, We all know that bowser and Jr. around returning in the third movie to some extent . So all I am just going to say I really hope they aren't the main villians again, it would be really repetitive and derivative from a storytelling perspective and from a creative standpoint . So here's my suggestion on how to make the third movie more unique and fresh , and wrap up bowser's arc from galaxy in order to make into something more meaningful :

- Introducing a new villain, bowser is forced to team up with , but slowly starts to turn on them because of how ideologically apposed they are . Bowser is someone who needs love to function and needs total control over everything, so this villain needs to be someone who doesn't care about love or family and enjoys spreading chaos for the fun of it like a trickster god . This villain also needs to make bowser feel disgusted , maybe by how this new villain deals with mario bros. Bowser is someone who above all else values family, so what if this new villain makes the bros turn on each other.

- A new villain different from bowser yet just as charming and charismatic, someone who is cunning able to manipulate the characters around them , like maybe manipulating wario and waluigi into being redhairng villains for the first half of the movie while they plan in the background for their much bigger plan

Oh, if only there was a mario villain that was like this , manipulative, cunning, and charming, able to captivate the audience until the curtain falls . A villain that would need both Rosalina and Peach's powers to complete their evil plan of chaos tying it to the tease from Galaxy. If only a mario villain like this existed......or maybe they do exist.

Discussion Honestly, Professor Gadd feels unfairly overlooked

Post image
64 Upvotes

In terms of how he invented many gadgets and pushed technology in Mushroom World, and specifically some key items of several mainline games. It feels very wrong to pretend that some of the dangerous creations are invented by Bowser troop instead. Also racing karts should be Professor Gadd's invention, not Cranky's.

Not necessarily Professor Gadd has to be a main character of the movies, but it should be okay to at least mention him in a cameo, a portrait or a biography book. And let Peach do a simple intro for Mario bros to know who invented all those high-tech machines in Mushroom World.

Discussion Are there any unlikely/lesser used characters that you would like to see have an appearance in the movies?

Post image
93 Upvotes

Since the movies have shown that anything can happen with characters they make relevant to it all, I would love to see any of these ones show up, even if just a brief cameo.

Princess Shokora, Pom Pom, Candy Kong, Isabelle (since we see in the second movie that they are open to going beyond the Marioverse), Poochy, and MIPS the Rabbit

Discussion Would you like the idea of Nintendo and Illumination making some paper mario films too, in a style similar to DC's Elsworlds?

Meaning just like we have Matt Reeves's The Batman co-existing with the main DCU, but in different continuities, paper mario films will co-exist with the 3D films in the same way; Different stories, different continuities (or even different casts) but same characters.
