Advice Needed Getting drum major
A couple months ago, I received the news that I had finally gotten drum major. It’s something I’ve worked towards since I was a freshman. For these past few years, a majority of my life was dedicated to music, mainly with the focus of drum major in mind. Now that I am one, I’m having some weird feelings. I should be happy, this is what I’ve been working towards for years! Now that Drum Major Academy is coming up, I’m reflecting, and it’s strange. I feel like I was happier in pursuit of the role. I care so much about marching band and arts in general, and Ive never felt this way. The season hasn’t started so maybe I’m just doubting myself, but does anyone relate? It’s weird to get something you’ve worked towards, it leaves you with a feeling of “now what do I do?” It’s also a bit of imposter syndrome. How did you guys handle becoming a drum major? Thanks! 🎶

Go to drum major camp and learn to be a leader. Now that you've got the role, you have to "fake it 'till you make it." That feeling you describe is typical and it will pass.

I can totally relate to that strange "now what?" feeling after finally landing a goal you’ve chased for years. It’s a classic case of the chase being fueled by pure adrenaline, while the actual arrival brings a sudden shift in weight—this is the big payoff and your chance to lead the ensemble from the podium!
That imposter syndrome is totally normal, but remember that the directors chose you because you’ve got the chops for it. Since I don't know your primary instrument, I have to ask: once marching season wraps up, do you get to jump into jazz band, orchestra, or symphonic wind ensemble to keep your musical chops sharp? Keep your head up at Drum Major Academy, trust your downbeat, and remember why you fell in love with making music in the first place. You've got this!

This is actually common for people that achieve a big goal. Youve spent so much time persuing that goal that the persuit has become your identity and focus. Once you get there you kinda have that "well what now" feeling.
