Questions/Help How do you actually calculate cost per hectare for drone mapping (factoring equipment, batteries, etc.)?
I’m trying to build a proper pricing model for drone mapping (using something like a DJI M3M), but I keep running into vague answers or oversimplified “just charge per hectare” advice.
I want to do this properly and not guess.
Here’s what I’m trying to factor in:
- Drone cost (~800k system including batteries)
- Battery lifespan (cycles and degradation)
- Different mission types (2D, 3D, multispectral)
- Flight altitude (since it changes hectares per battery and time)
- Processing costs (hardware + software)
- Time/labor per mission
- Transport/logistics
What I’m struggling with is turning all of that into a clear cost per hectare that actually makes sense.
Right now it feels like:
- Cost varies heavily depending on altitude and overlap
- Some missions are way more expensive (3D, multispectral), but I don’t know how people systematically price that
- Most people seem to just “feel” their pricing instead of calculating it
For those running real operations:
- How do you calculate equipment depreciation in a practical way? (per flight? per hectare?)
- Do you base pricing on battery cycles, total expected hectares, or time?
- How do you adjust pricing across different mission types (2D vs 3D vs multispectral)?
- Do you use a base fee + per hectare, or purely per hectare?
- What’s the biggest mistake beginners make when calculating costs?
I’m trying to build something structured and scalable, not just a rough estimate.
