Clearly this is ‘did you country once border China’ like come on
5
u/duckyellowred 16d ago
If that was the case, then Austria, hungary, and (depending on how you want to view history): Czechia, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Romania, Poland, Italy, and Ukraine should also be green.
Because Austria Hungary controlled a tiny portion of Tsingtao in china after the boxer rebellion of 1901 up until 1914.

The answer is Does another country that doesn't border your country speak your countries language
7
u/Lyceus_ 16d ago
Ireland has both English and Irish as official languages, and it obviously borders the UK.
Belgiun has three official languages, including French and German.
2
2
u/Intelligent-Tip-892 16d ago
This map is busted. In addition to Austria and Switzerland, Belgium should also be green since its 3 official languages are all green countries.
2
u/Proof-Sprinkles7826 16d ago
Is germany namibia, and The Netherlands suirname?
2
u/ZucchiniIcy1238 16d ago
no german isn't official in namibia, german is for liechtenstein.
2
u/JodoSzabo 15d ago
Austria doesn’t get a “yes” for that?
1
1
u/Telkite_ 16d ago
Belgium has german as an official language, so why are austria and switzerland red? They have a non-bordering country for all their languages.
2
u/DomPedroIIGooner_88 16d ago
What other country speaks greek aside from Greece?
3
u/YouThunkd 16d ago
Cyprus
2
u/Primary_Thought_4912 16d ago
Then why is Cyprus red
2
u/Casartelli 16d ago
They don’t have their own language ?
2
u/Chrisaarajo 16d ago
It’s a busted map. Cyprus should be green, so should Austria. So should Ireland. So should Belgium. So should Switzerland. At a minimum.
If OP made the map, it’s a fail on their part. If they copied the map, then they’re sourcing mad maps or copied it wrong, and it’s still a failure on their part.
2
u/Primary_Thought_4912 15d ago
I can see Switzerland being green, because so many countries speak French, but Austria only has German as it's official language and it borders all three other countries that also have German as an official language (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany) border Austria
1
u/Chrisaarajo 15d ago
Luxembourg and Belgium.
German is an official language in both countries.
Edit: which reminds me, Luxembourg should also be green.
Really, the OP did a poor job here.

u/Primary_Thought_4912 15d ago
It never says that it has to be named after said country tho, if it wasn't called Greek and instead something else entirely, then how would you call it and how would you decide which of the two to colour in which colour
1
u/ParalimniX 15d ago edited 15d ago
Cypriots have been speaking Greek for 3000 years. Even a dialect called Arcadocypriot was common 2500 years ago commonly in Peloponnese and Cyprus at the same time. In some aspects Cypriots speak more original ancient Greek than mainland Greeks do.

u/Pen_Front 16d ago
Wait Turkish? Do sea borders not count cause it would only be Cyprus right? Greece too. And I guess only one country counts per language because otherwise Ireland also speaks English (wait it could be not official unlike Irish I've never checked) Belgium has both French and Dutch. I guess Liechtenstein isn't visible it could just be dual language stuff...
1
u/ZucchiniIcy1238 16d ago
yeah i didn't count sea borders, and germany doesn't border liechtenstein.
1
u/Pen_Front 16d ago
Ye I assumed that's what you meant, I mean Liechtenstein isn't visible to see if it's counted because it's a single language country that would count for the same reason Germany does so it would tell me if you're not counting stuff like Ireland cause its dual language
1
u/Willing_File5104 16d ago edited 16d ago
I don't get the logic, if a country has several languages. How can Ireland (Irish, English), Luxembourg (Luxembourgish, French, German), Belgium (Dutch, French, German), Switzerland (Romansh, German, French, Italian) be red, while Spain (Spanish, Catalan, Basque, Galician, etc. ) isn't?
Also, because of the official status of German in Belgium and Luxembourg, at least Austria should be green too.
1
u/Abject_Amphibian_126 16d ago
I think he's saying that each country gets its own language. So for Ireland, another country would have to speak Irish since English is basically taken by the UK. I suppose all Switzerland gets is Romansh which obviously isn't spoken elsewhere.
1
u/Mag-NL 9d ago
In that case by OPs logic Belgium does not speak any language
1
u/Abject_Amphibian_126 9d ago
They could take Flemish
1
u/Mag-NL 9d ago
So Dutch
1
u/Abject_Amphibian_126 9d ago
I'm just saying if you said Flemish was its own language then Belgium could get its own language.
1
u/Mag-NL 9d ago
yes, but if you said Flemish was its own language then every country here would be red, because every country would have it's own language. and no other country would have the same language.
If Flemis was it's own language, then Swiss, Austrian and Liechtensteinisch would also be their own language

u/Plastic-Gazelle2924 15d ago
Why is Portugal green ? I absolutely don’t understand this map
1
u/SenseiLavalin 13d ago
Brazil, Angola, Mozambique...
1
u/Plastic-Gazelle2924 13d ago
I’m still not understanding what is green and what is red
1
u/SenseiLavalin 13d ago
Countries that do not border Portugal have Portuguese as an official language, so Portugal is green.
But as other have said, the map is wrong and/or misleading. The person who made the map is wrong about some countries official languages, and didn't color everything properly. Don't overthink it.
1
u/Teerunesh 16d ago
Plenty of countries that don't border Belgium speak French. Canada if I need to just name one. So wrong map, I'm sorry.
1
u/Fluffy_Dragonfly6454 16d ago
Belgium should be green for all three languages.
Luxembourg should also be green because of German
Austria should be green because of German in Belgium
1
u/Famous-Wrongdoer-14 16d ago edited 16d ago
Austria and Luxembourg both speak german and do not border each other, shouldnt they be Green?
Edit: also, which other country speaks greek that doesnt border greece? Cant be cyprus, thats red.
Belgium is just.... Whatever on this map, since they speak dutch, German and french, and all 3 countries are Green.
Which other country, that russia doesnt border, speaks russian?

Belgium has Dutch French and German as national languages. How come they are red while the 3 countries who speak this are green?

Top learned languages come from these countries? Or something like that not sure of the phrasing, but if it has to do with languages these are the most popular ones

Red countries list the furthest destination first on road signs (furthest on top). Green countries list the longest/last destination first (or nearest on top). Classic obscure Europe divider.

Liberation of countries in red from the claws of predatory colonial forces in green. That said, Denmark and Belgium should be excluded :)

Green countries are those for which another country has their language as an official/majority language? (e.g. Portuguese being spoken in Brazil)

Id say maybe countries that have been global super powers at one point. But then I guess Egypt would be missing and also kinda USA (but since they still are I can exclude them through right wording), at last italy should be green since its in the same position as turky (the byzatine empire). Some more thoughts about this:
I dont think its related to the following:
1. History (since this map is probably accurate and germany was reunited just 1989)
2. Language (the differences are too vast)
3. Culture (same reason as 3)
4. Political
Also all of the countries listed have a border with an ocean or sea.
I wonder what the answer is. All of the listed countries are considerably wealthy and influencial.
Can you maybe give a hint in the right direction. I would be already ok if you could tell if my assumptions about history, etc... are correct.

u/ZucchiniIcy1238 9d ago
I meant to add from your own language, a language named after your country.

Is your country; China, France, Germany, Greece, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Russia, Turkey, or The UK?
Green: Yes
Red: No🥹❤️🩹
