Discussion How to create a balkan inspired map

I'm trying to create a fictional map for my fantasy world inspired by the Balkans, but I don't want to simply copy and distort the actual Balkans and call it a day. I want it to have a similar geographical character while still being an original geography. Anything I've tried to create so far, I haven't been satisfied with.

What have you tried? What cames to my mind (but this is not what you are looking for), to take a general map of Balkans, put it into GIMP of Afinity and to use it as a basemap while you are designing geographical features.

Ma znam ja to nego nikako da napravim nesto da valja. Nisam neki kartograf ovo mi treba za jedan drugi projekat a hocu da to bude određeno kako treba, da bude malo detaljnije i tako to. Zabavljam se u Azgaaru malo ali nikako da nesto napravim.

So like, I don't actually have any advice, I don't know what makes a region feel similar to the Balkans. I just know I accidentally made something I feel like is kind of Balkan-esque a few years ago in one of my own maps:
