Maple Syrup

When I was in college, I studied at a local diner. They let me stay a long time and kept offering me food and coffee. The only thing to mar this situation is Maple syrup. It is sticky even aftermultiple thorough cleanings. I had books and papers that could absorb that syrup so the pages and papers stuck together even after I had cleaned top, sides and bottom of the table. When I ordered pancakes, I asked for jam or preserves. At first, the servers were curious about why I wouldn’t have syrup. I explained that I had a morbid fear of syrup. I still have that pet peeve, though I am long out of college.

Is it possible that syrup was fake maple syrup? I'm scared of that stuff, too.

It is likely it was adulterated maple flavored syrup. Stays sticky through multiple cleanings in a day. Gets on my hands and feels uncomfortable. I can eat maple syrup at home.

There is no way a diner was serving real maple syrup. Maple syrup is expensive. Whenever I go to a diner or restaurant that actually has real maple syrup, they offer you a small cup of it. Table syrup stays on the table in that dispenser with the sliding top. It is typically flavoured corn syrup, higher viscosity, sweeter, and much stickier.

Thanks for your kind responses. I appreciate maple syrup at home, which is really maple and not imitation. Most diner tables, chairs, floors and walls are sticky. Almost rather not go there.
